Dori probably has so many now-grown dwarves that he’s helped who still look up to him. They know he doesn’t have any living family. They’ll run errands for him, and help around the house, and help him cook things, and visit him with their kids and let him play with them. Dori’s house is probably full of gifts and knick-knacks from his “little ones,” as he calls them. He knits them socks and grumbles at them to eat better.

SOLD *bangs gavel* YES.

Nori and Ori are going to be in for the mother henning the likes of which they have never known before when Dori gets to the Halls. Though I kind of want someone to look after *him* too, though I’m not sure whether he’d allow it ^^

Oh, Dori does let people care for him, if in a very removed and polite way. He can’t allow people to become as close as his brothers were – it hurts too much, really. But he’s not totally alone. Gloin is still his friend, as is Bofur. He’s rather fond of Mizim (two classic Dwarven beauties with absolutely NO interest in capitalising upon their looks? Imagine the understanding sighs and commiseration!), and tuts over her children on occasion (just to keep in practice).

Sansukh’s Dori has basically adopted the whole Mountain, really. Clever old Dain saw this, and by making Dori the Quartermaster for the war-effort he put Dori in the perfect position to care and fuss for everybody in the most hands-on way possible, with the appropriate authority to back it up.

It doesn’t hurt that Dori has worked his way up to the most prominent Guild position through his own efforts either – he has been High Guildmaster for nearly thirty years now, and every Guild has had to clean up its act and shape up under his expert scrutiny.

(if he pays particular attention to the Scribes’ Guild, their poor apprentices and to their orphan school, well, he doesn’t think anyone would really be surprised.)

Dori does miss having people who are only his, though.

Ohmygod, Balin the aggressively proud uncle with almost obscenely fat baby Wee Thorin. Balin would cart him around when it was his turn to babysit, and use him to distract people in meetings so he could get his way. The sound of cooing dwarves followed Balin and Wee Thorin everywhere – “look at that dapper old fellow with the adorable baby!” Balin smiles and Wee Thorin sticks his foot in his mouth determinedly.

OH NONNIE

I love this. And I will carry it around in my head all day, bc it is adoooorable. ohgod yes baby gymnastics while you’re trying to carry them hahahaha

(and now I wish that Balin had had the chance to cart his own little namesake around with that fond pride.)

I just want to hug Bomris and Kifur they sound so lovely. And gosh, how heartbreaking it must have been for them to watch Bifur be so injured, and then to have it happen *again*. The Ur family man, they’ve been through so much :(

I KNOOOOOOW.

It was horrible. Bomris wrung her hands and cried a lot. Kifur hovered anxiously, weeping into his beard. It was simply awful.

(There was hope after he seemed to improve, following his second injury. But it slowly dwindled away.)
