have you ever read Black Maria by Diana Wynne Jones? that’s the one book i’ve read of hers, and it’s not as fantastical as Howl’s Moving Castle must be (i have seen the film), but it’s on par with Pratchett for how it grabbed at my insides with its accuracy

omg YES – that book gave me the absolute screaming ragefits, actually. Especially Aunt Maria never calling them by their chosen names. RAGE. An amazing book, and I like the journal style too.

(READ MAGICIANS OF CAPRONA. READ THE WHOLE CHRESTOMANCI SERIES, DAMMIT. THEY’RE SO GOOOOOOD.)

You’re a fan of Diana Wynne Jones?! I’m reading Howl’s Moving Castle to my little sisters now, and they love it!! I’m so happy that I found someone else who enjoys her works!! I thought I was alone!!

HELL no, you’re not alone! I love them, I have a whole ton of her books. I can blitz through one of them in no time at all, but I always feel like I’ve been chatting with a remarkable, wonderful, magical friend, each and every time.

(I’m particularly fond of the Magicians of Caprona)

for the ask game- L O T R ;)

L: How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?

Answered 🙂

O: How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters?

Usually with a half-baked idea for a plot. Then it all gets a Lot Bigger.

T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?

Turning a good character into a villain in order to give a ship an artificial antagonist, fridging the female characters and minimising their friendships and relationships, woobiefying the bad-but-pretty ACTUAL villain, trite oversimplification of characters, codependency, cramming one member of a m/m ship into a ‘feminine’ stereotype – ok, look, this list is long and I am stopping here 😀

I have AO3 Savior, and I recommend it wholeheartedly!

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

OH MY GOD TONS AND TONS. I am indebted to Terry Pratchett, Ursula Le Guin and Tolkien, of course. Douglas Adams, who basically sculpted my sense of humour. Also, Diana Wynne Jones, the queen of clean and conversational prose. There are a lot more, but my mind is coming up blank this evening!

There are honestly a zillion fanfic writers who have influenced my style over the years. I’ve been reading fanfic for 15 years, after all! I humbly salute each and every one of you. ❤

D, F, L!

D: Is there a song or a playlist to associate with [insert fic]?

ERRm – yeah, for Sansukh there is a whole TON of songs!

Check out the Sansukh Music collection – I DO mean ‘collection’, it has all gotten a bit… BIG.

There’s also a few (AWESOME) playlists 🙂 It’s all on the document… there is a LOT of music, heh.

Irreconcilable Differences (my great big Science Boyfriends fic) also has a fanmix here! It was made by the awesome @x-jean. Thank you!

I don’t tend to listen to music or associate an artist’s work with a fic – music is incredibly personal and subjective to me, and so what feels right to me might not feel right to someone else, and I know that.

That being said, I am a sucker for any and all choral music. 😀

F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

oh gosh, this is hard to choose.

Hmm. The opening scene of ‘Irreconcilable Differences’ is, I think, one of my better pieces of character writing (for Tony, that is). I’m also still quite bashfully proud of my Savage Hulk voice 🙂

There’s three dialogue pieces in ‘Sansukh’ that seemed to just… fall into place, though I know it’s because I laid MASSES of groundwork for them!

The first is the two juxtaposing Dis-and-Gimli scenes… the one from Chapter 3, and the one from Chapter 45. Ever wanted to give yourself a cookie? That was me, writing that scene 😀

The second is the hair-cutting scene in Chapter 15. I think that’s one of my best-paced scenes EVER.

The last is the scene between Bilbo and Thorin in Chapter 39. I am still SO proud of the verbal rug-pull I gave Thorin, SERIOUSLY I am.

L: How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?

THREE BILLIONTY AND ELEVEN TIMES. and I will STILL have left mistakes in it, I know I know I know AUGH.

I am a tinkerer, I can’t NOT tinker!

Job interview anon with an update. I didn’t get the job. When I went in for my interview, they said that they would let me know after they interviewed the other person, and I heard back today that they decided to go with her instead of me. I’m trying to figure out if it’s something I did (did I not shake their hand strongly enough? not have enough experience?), but I know that’s not productive. Tomorrow I’m going to pick up more applications for other places, it’s just a bummer.

*hugs*

It sucks when you don’t get the position. I am proud of you for putting yourself out there. I’m even prouder that you are going to keep putting yourself out there. THAT is the hard part, and you are tough, amazing and brave to do it. It sucks to get knocked back, and you are awesome for getting up again right away, off to get more applications.

Keep on putting yourself out there, talking up your awesomeness. You are a potential amazing asset to any company or business. You are bright and brave and persistent, and I’m proud of you.

Do you know if the Sansûkh Podfic is going to use your songs (like you singing) for the parts where that shows up, or are they going to re-record them with the voice actors? (if this isn’t the right place to ask, I’m really sorry, and you don’t need to publish this – I’ll ask the actual tumblr, sorry to bother you)

I am 90% certain that they are going to be re-recorded, actually! Our musical director is the SUPERB @notanightlight, and she is the person to ask about the Sansukh Choir.

(but in a pinch, my recordings are there to use as a backing track/basis/rehearsal track, so there we go 🙂

I love how individualized your characters are in Sansukh!! Especially the OCs and characters with minimal canon development. They’re all different, with different personalities, abilities, and methods. We can see how characters affect each other (within family groups, mentors, etc) and how different events are dealt with by different characters. Go A+++ characterization by Dets!

*blushie blushie* THANK YOU NONNIE, THANK YOU SO SO MUCH

(aasdlhfgaljdhf you mentioned how the character’s different personalities affect and modify the behaviour of the others I worked so harrrrd on that and I am gonna squeak yup ok squeaking now…!)

Hey dets! 🙋 I was just wondering what you thought about dwarfs finding love/their ones in the halls of mahal? Like they would probably meet at some point in their lives but might not have followed through with romance, but the halls of Mahal are like eternal so? Also what about love with Dwarfs from other clans? Do the clans mix much in the halls? Sorry for all the questions 😂 thanks 😊

Hey Nonnie!

No worries! Love a question, me 🙂 they make me think!

I’ve answered your first one, some time back! Here is my answer

Summarised: yes, Dwarves can TOTALLY find romance in the Halls, but it takes a while because of the huge stagnancy/inertia of the Halls. They are a place of waiting, and of peace, basically. So things happen slowly, if at all.

(still, Bifur and Ori managed to discover love for each other after death, so heyyy it happens!)

Oh yeah, other clans could totally happen! ABSOLUTELY happen. I mean, I have a few inter-clan relationships going on already… Bomfris is a Broadbeam, Orla is a Blacklock, Bifur, Bombur AND Bofur are Broadbeams… Gloin is ½ Firebeard… etc!

I think mingling would depend on the Dwarves as individuals rather than as a unit. Some would like to keep only to those folks they know – or knew, rather. Some are gregarious and curious and interested in meeting new people and learning about them!

(Bombur would absolutely be one of these… he’s a rather reticent fellow by nature, but he must-must-must know about their food, what are their cuisines like? Can he try it? What ingredient is this? May he PLEASE watch you as you make it???)
