Gimizh and Laerophen have at least one matching outfit. Gimris isn’t sure whether she wants to laugh or cry, Gloin goes and yells in a corner for a minute, then pointedly complements Laerophen on his outfit. Bofur is just losing it. Watching the tiny dorf and the gangly elf hanging out, being all matchy matchy.

my fave part of this is Gloin, tbh. Imagining him going into a corner to screech between his teeth for a solid five seconds. Then coming back calmly and saying, “you’re wearin’ the belt upside-down. But… y’ look… decent. Well done.”

Laerophen has acquired some dwarf-style clothing because Somehow (Gimizh) some of Laero’s clothes got ruined. Dori does his best to make sure Larophen looks fabulous, and the result is surprisingly effective. Some of Bilbo’s Shire patterns are used. Thranduil sees some of the new clothes and is somewhat displeased. He is only mollified by the fact that dwarf clothes are better than no clothes or ruined clothes. And Gimizh did a hell of a job ruining elf-clothes. That takes /work./

I should’ve done it earlier but I’m not very pretty and I let him flatter me to the point that I couldn’t argue with him. Also I’m not sure if I should tell his SO – it’s probably not my place? I am honestly very relieved that you are deciding to get out. It’s not a fair situation. You are brave and amazing. You can do this. You can do this. You are worth 10000 of this person, you deserve to have honesty. You deserve your comfort to be a priority. You deserve more than this.

You say ‘I’m not very pretty’ – do you know, there’s a thing I’ve discovered over time? That everyone I’ve ever known who says this? IS STUNNING. They can’t see it, though, bc we have been sold such a narrow blinkered STUPID expectation of beauty by people who want to sell us stuff. I am thoroughly certain that you are BEAUTIFUL. That your eyes shine when you are excited. That you laugh like a dream. That someone will see the way you do one small seemingly insignificant thing, say, leaning forward over a coffee table, to grab your cup, and be struck by the perfection that is your body moving in relaxed comfortable, happy harmony. Perhaps you sing. Perhaps you argue with total passion. Perhaps you dance – and there is beauty. There it is.

PLEASE believe me. I have been where you are. I am not ‘pretty’. Not the way I always imagined pretty to look, growing up. But now I know I can be beautiful – just as I know this: you. are. beautiful. 

If this man is reinforcing the idea that you are in some way NOT BEAUTIFUL, and that by paying you attention he is somehow doing YOU A FAVOUR, then cripes, I am thrilled twice over that you are removing yourself from this situation.

When it comes to telling his partner, I am honestly at a crossroads. There are several conditions to consider. You are a 19 year old who never signed up for this nonsense, and the emotional toll of such an action is pretty high – particularly if his partner decides to blame you. 

On the other hand, I do believe that his partner deserves to know. If this man has any sort of spine (or decency), he would tell them himself. 

Again, I will ask for the advice of wiser, more experienced minds here? Please help this stunningly wonderful, beautiful young Nonnie out. Anybody got any kind words for this gorgeous soul?

Hi Dets. This may seem odd bit you seem like someone who knows what a good relationship is so could I ask for some impartial advice? Basically I’ve been seeing this man (I’m 19, he’s 30) sporadically for seven months. I really liked him but I did feel weirdly uneasy around him sometimes. Anyway some FB snooping revealed that he has a partner of ten years that he never told me about. I’m at a loss really. Feel awful and I’ve no idea what to do?x

If you were my child, I would tell you this:

This man lied to you. He is keeping you a secret. He has no compunction about cheating. He is dishonest in his relationships. He makes you uneasy. You have a HUGE age imbalance that keeps him at an advantage over you. 

This doesn’t sound healthy, just from this little snapshot that you’ve given me. It sounds manipulative, and dishonest. 

I would leave. Find a relationship with someone who doesn’t make me their naughty young thing on the side. Someone who cares enough to be honest with me. 

This would most certainly feel awful, Nonnie. I know it must be very hard: I am sending you all my good thoughts and strength. You deserve more than this, I promise you. You do not need to hold onto a situation that is dishonest and uncomfortable. You can find a relationship that truly makes you happy, one where you are valued and equal and loved, openly and proudly.  

How do you come up with all your lovely names for elves and dwarves? I always struggle for names for originals!

Oh god, this is a bugbear for anybody I think. I made up some naming conventions for Dwarves, which I have linked here. 

Tolkien mined the Völuspá saga for his Dwarf names… and there are actually a whole bunch of names he DIDN’T USE, so go to town! 

For the race of Men, I have used names similar in rhythm and vowel quality to the ones Tolkien already made up. It’s worth remembering that every name has a culture attached to it! A Rohirric name is different to a Gondorian one! (e.g. Folcwine, Gamling vs Faramir, Beregond etc).

There’s plenty of Elven Name generators, if you wanted to cheat a bit! Here’s one!

I also made up a WHOLE LIST OF SINDARIN NAMES for possible Mirkwood Elves, using the Sindarin-English dictionary project Hisweloke. Here they are reproduced for you, to get some sort of idea of how I did it!

When it comes to the Dwarven dark-names, I spent ages and AGES AND AAAGES wrestling with Neo-Khuzdul to find something that works (and that I can somewhat pronounce!!!)

Things the snippet did: 1) made me almost cry (Gimli nooooo everything will be fine shhhh), 3) made me almost cry again (Thorin! working with gold again! Fucking augh!), and 4) made me say “Thorin, you fucking nerd” out loud to my phone bc /flowers/

Hi there! First of all, this question is not meant to belittle or dissuade you from Gigolas in any way. You have dragged me into this ship and I will never escape. I was wondering, however: from an objective viewpoint, how do you feel about Legolas/Tauriel? (I don’t ship it myself, but I was curious to see what you thought.) Objectively, I think they’re both very pretty.

Subjectively, I don’t feel anything for it at all. *sheepish look* 

Gimli is my fave boy, I am far less interested when he’s not involved, tbh! A lot of my LOTR shipping has its origins in the books rather than the movies – I don’t say that to be elitist, promise. It’s just that I am OLD, and I read the books and began shipping stuff long before the movies ever even existed. 

(the movies totally sold me on Kiliel, though… so! *cheerful shrug*)

All power to those that ship it, though. Hope they get all the pretty fanart and fic!
