So Gimris was helping deliver one of Bombur’s grand babies a few chapters ago – did Bombur live long enough to meet that little one?

Yes, he did. Geri’s child, Gara, was born later that night after a very tricky labour. The baby was breech, and so there was a lot of touch-and-go.

Bombur met her briefly, and he held her once. He is very good at holding babies, after all. “Hello, little love,” he said in his soft, shy voice. “I am your grandpa, and I love you already.”

“That’s your nose,” Gimris said, smiling tiredly.

“Nah, it’s hers,” he said, and tapped it with a gentle finger. “That’s her perfect little nose, that is.”

The baby, exhausted after her tricky entry into the world and with the opportunistic ability of all newborns, blinked with her unfocused little eyes, and promptly fell asleep.

Proud Grandparents Thror and Hrera. *gurgle*

OH SO PROUD.

Thror: Look at how strong and smart and brave they are. *sighs* What did I do to deserve them in my life? They are so – so good.

Hrera: Sit here, Frerin-love. That’s it. Put your head on my knee. Don’t think I don’t see you fidgeting there, Thorin darling. Your turn next. What lovely hair you have, Dis dear. Now, I’ve a little something for you all – Thorin, go to the tin in the pantry – yes, Frerin love, there shall be seedcakes and tea.

After I have fixed your braids, mind you.

At some point, Dori makes Gimli and Gimizh matching sweaters. Gimizh just about explodes with happiness.

OH MY GOOOODDD

HE WOULD

HE UTTERLY, TOTALLY, COMPLETELY WOULD. And he’d badger Gimli into wearing it all the time, so that they would match as often as possible. Gimris would shake her head and try to hide her smile. Dori would be pleased. Bofur would giggle aloud at the look on Gimli’s face. Because it’s one thing to wear it at home, but quite another to try and pair it with his armour and gear for patrol.

Mahal help the first Dwarf who laughs.

Ahhh, watching the other shoe drop about Thorin’s flower motifs was delightful, and the dark name revelation was fantastic! Back in Ch.34 I really enjoyed your exploration of Bilbo’s anger; I loved the realistic acknowledgement that you can be profoundly in love with someone and furiously angry with them at the same time and that it’s not a contradiction, that love isn’t the end of the argument. And their mix of painfully intense emotion and hands-clamped-over-the-face awkwardness is my jam :)

Ahhh, thank you! Thank you SO much! Oh, you’ve made my day: I’m so so HAPPY you’re on-board with that.

It is precisely what I was going for, and I am absolutely so touched that you feel that way too. The gargantuan invasion of Bilbo’s privacy is not something that can be lightly brushed aside in the first place – even after Bilbo’s initial anger in Ch34 – and yeah, I wanted to show that a relationship (or even a possible relationship) doesn’t necessarily crumble to bits just because the participants had a fight. Addressing problems is important. Disagreement can be healthy, and can lead to a better understanding of each other. Thus both the Gigolas and Bagginshield scenes in Ch38!

OH SO AWKWARD, AWKWARD CENTRAL, MAXIMUM AWKWARDNESS LEVELS ACHIEVED, SOON TO REACH CRITICAL AWKWARD OVERLOAD. I’m so happy you liked it, Nonnie! It’s my jam too 🙂

(Being an awkward sort of duck myself, I found it very easy to write that bit!! 😀 )

So, I’ve been rereading Sansûkh, and I was watching the Fellowship of the Ring with my family earlier. When they got to the Chamber of Mazarbul all I could think of was how devastated Balin was. Then Pippin did his thing and I burst out laughing and my mom asks what was so funny and I replied, “Poor Grechar!!” and kept laughing. She didn’t get it, but it made my day and I though I’d share. Thanks for such an amazing fic!! xoxo <3

HAHAHAHAH OH DEAR

Poor Grechar, down the well! *hugs* I am sorry – even I find it hard to watch Gimli’s grief in Moria now, because Oin and Ori and Balin seem to be hovering just there.

Augh. What did I dooooooo.

i’m going to start sansukh tonight (it’s late, i know, but better late than never XD) and i wanted to ask: is it canon compliant of all 3 hobbit movies?

Hey Nonnie! Oh, thank you so much for giving it a shot. I’m really honoured and grateful!

I do feel I should warn you – the first eight chapters are pretty sad, but it picks up. And also – *points at happy ending tag* I PROMISE. I can also faithfully promise that I will never abandon Sansukh. Never ever.

Yes, it is compliant with the movies! After the third one came out, I had to make some minor adjustments, but tbh there wasn’t much to change. I’d left myself a little wiggle room, so it was relatively easy to accommodate the new info. I am using the book-canon ages and timelines, however. Having resources such as the family trees and so is just invaluable to me. So that means that there are 79 years between The Hobbit and LOTR, not 60 as there are in the films.

(and even though it is compliant with the films and books etc? To quote The Mummy: ‘Death is only the beginning.’)

🙂

I really hope you enjoy it, Nonnie! Thank you again for giving it a go!

could a dwarf presumably create artifacts greater than the silmarils (perhaps moreso) with ease?

urrrrrrrrrrrrgh Nonnie…!

Maybe not with ease! Feanor was a genius. He was probably the most gifted smith/creator/inventor who has ever ever lived in all the history of Arda. Tolkien goes out of his way to say that Feanor was the most amazing: “For Fëanor was made the mightiest in all parts of body and mind: in valour, in endurance, in beauty, in understanding, in skill, in strength and subtlety alike: of all the Children of Ilúvatar, and a bright flame was in him.

But the Dwarves have had geniuses too. A good example is Telchar.

Telchar was a smith of Nogrod, one of the cities in the Blue Mountains in the First Age. We know of three of his astonishing works. Angrist, the knife that could cut through iron. The Dragon-Helm of Dor-Lormin, which had enchantments on it to protect the wearer from wounds. And lastly, Narsil, sword of Elendil, which was re-forged for Aragorn and re-named Anduril.

He was pretty boss 🙂

Hey Dets! Question, are the petty dwarves in the Halls too? Like, is Mim there? If not what happened to them?

ooooooh good question… I expect so, yeah. Some of them. IDK, the Petty-Dwarves weren’t exactly minglers, I reckon they’d stick to themselves, perhaps they’d have their own areas.

Considering that there’s a strong inference that the Petty-Dwarves were not a separate race to other Dwarves, but were in fact normal Dwarves who were long ago exiled from greater Dwarven society for crimes, etc., it may be that some of them are back on the reincarnation merry-go-round, trying to get it right this time. *shrug*
