do you ever think about what Thorin said to the raven right after Bard came? I feel like it showed up in the iron hills and lands in front of Dain and all you hear is “this piece of shit elven king sent a man to come talk to me and they’re asking for gold. Oh yeah, you know that quest that no one wanted to come on because everyone said we would all die, well the dragon is dead so its cool to come to Erebor if you want. Bilbo will make you snacks. Oh you have to meet Bilbo, he’s going to be the new consort once I am done with this nonsense over these “gems of pure starlight” lol wait till he finds out they’re cubic zirconia”
i would actually be very interested in a modernised hobbit that had thorin and co. as jewish?
i mean i’ve seen gigolas fic where gimli kinda drew out the parallels between the jewish diaspora and the dwarves of erebor post-smaug’s attack but that was in a middle-earth setting
idek
i just thought it’d be interesting to see a modern!durin family that’s jewish and bilbo getting to know them (and celebrating hanukkah with little fili and kili say it with me d’awwwwwwww) and like, dis and thorin are reform and they occasionally butt up against the very orthodox balin but in the end they’re all family
has anyone done this yet even as a side detail to a larger au because i would be interested as hell in reading it
Going to Hillel is easier than cooking Shabbat dinner, and Theodor Derensky, Ph.D has settled into a comfortable Friday-night routine with the rest of the local Jewish community. When a confused and sleep-deprived triage nurse from Oxford stumbles in, however, everything changes.
Hilarious and clever, with clean prose and FANTASTIC dialogue. All the Dwarves are here – now and then it takes a moment to figure out which character is which, bc new names. But then it becomes natural, and you go ‘OH THAT’S DWALIN’ or “GLOOOOIN!’ There are utterly side-splitting laughs here, and a very grumpy, very gay Thorin (with a massive, loving, bickering Jewish clan) – and an utterly clueless and snappish nurse Bilbo.
This is awesome, and I am hanging out for more!
(Modern AU: Bagginshield, Nwalin, Gigolas, other pairings to follow!)
I was told to post as many work in progress shots as I wanted. *cackles* Bilbo colored. (Decided to do the transparency in Photoshop but it shall be done)
Detail shot of waistcoat and now with BLUSHY
SHOCKED HOBBIT IS SHOCKED (awwww yisss blue violets!!) I LOVE HIM, he looks so kerflummoxed and just a little bit turned on hahahah don’t blame him at all
Not on the level of Thrain, no. Thrain has terrible, terrible dissociation issues, the aftermath of physical and psychological torture. He’s so strong, though. He’s healing. And he is, first and foremost, there for his family – just as they are for him.
The way I am writing the Ring, it remains mostly dormant during its stay with Bilbo. It grows in power as Sauron’s strength waxes. Even though it is not at full strength, it is still a huge weight to carry and a massive distortion upon Bilbo’s life – particularly because Bilbo carried it for so, so long.
It increased his life-span, yes. But I also think it increased his secrecy, to the point of paranoia almost. Anxiety, reclusiveness, obsessiveness, suspicion. I think these would have been linked to the Ring’s influence on Bilbo.
Anger is also inextricably linked to the Ring – it delights in discord. The older Bilbo gets, the more snappish he gets. I think he would have moments of inexplicable anger. At Thorin for dying, at himself, at nothing in particular – and everything. When they pass, he would be drained and sad.
I think Thorin would try and be heard by Bilbo in those moments. I think Thorin would desperately call to his Hobbit, pleading with him, hoping that the inconstant blessing of his Gift would help him break through.
I know I know I’m posting a lot of ‘in progress’ shots of this one but I feel like it so there. Toying with making Bilbo possibly transparent right now. Haven’t decided. Might just do the background in Photoshop after I color Thorin and Bilbo in marker.
Decided to expand Bilbo to show him sitting on the dresser in front of the brass mirror.(what are you doing to yourself Lace that’s a whole other hand to draw?! Thorin’s right hand already sucks!) as you all can see my tablet is glitching to high heaven, hence the *extremely* rough sketch for the expansion in blue and the little glitchy spikes everywhere on Bilbo’s lower half. I don’t know how much I’ll get to work on this tomorrow. (my mom’s birthday) or if I’ll even be able to get my goddamned tablet to work. (thorin, thorin, you look so heartbroken now… you only looked confused before. omg I haven’t drawn on your body hair yet that’s why your torso looks weird. dammit) If only I had some marker paper I would just do this in ink and marker. Enjoy the update shot for now!
Well, I don’t have anything written out specifically, but I imagine that they were actually very cruel for Frerin to watch. Because they would have raised his hopes so high; “look, look, Amad! The Hobbit can get past the dragon-spell, he can break through the obsession, Thorin is back to himself!…
And then it passes once more, like a cloud covering the moon.
Oh man this is still a mess. Will be more of a three panel comic when I finish. Based on that scene from chapter 34 of Sansukh. I asked determamfidd for a request and this was it =). I hope she can enjoy it. I had so much fun doing Thorin’s tattoos. Dets was kind enough to tell me where Thorin’s mourning marks might be. And I designed one for each loved one lost. I will get a clean scan of this up tomorrow when my printer should be working.
mourning mark reference sheet. (hrera’s is on his back!)
