Information Update

sansukhorc-estra:

So here’s all everything going on thus far:

First I’m calling anyone who has extensive knowledge of brass instruments to be in charge of that section, so to speak. punsbulletsandpointythings will be the head of percussion, the-dragongirl has come aboard to handle all things strings, and I will be working with the winds.

Which leaves the brass section open, if you wish to be head of that section simply send an ask. You’ll be handling the informal auditions (which I will explain below) and a few other things.

Second, this is a message for all you violas players out there, we need you! From my rough list, I’ve found no one who plays the viola and we’re definitely going to need violas in our pool of instruments.

Third, I will be sending out messages to confirm if I received messages from you about what instrument you play and how to contact you (if you’d rather some other way of communication than tumblr, just say so!). If you don’t receive a message and have previously contacted then my tumblr most likely ate it when i was having a lot of problems. I kindly ask that if this is the case, send a message to this page and I will confirm you.

Fourth, the informal audition process I mentioned above will only be to determine your skill level AND your recording quality. This is not going to be an exclusive thing, there will be a pool of instruments we pull from for certain songs based on the input from the original composers. Also I know there are others like myself who enjoy parts that are simpler due to anxiety or many other reasons, so this is by no means saying we won’t be giving everyone a part at some point or another.

Please spread this info around, once we have someone for the brass section all of the other things can be done! Thank you guys for your patience and interest in this crazy idea.

TUGGER YOU ARE A STAR.

Oh my god, this is an amazing idea. Seriously, I wish that I had this when I was like 13-14. Its really hard to be a younger member of the LGBTQA community, because nothing is ever aimed at them. Seriously, you’re gonna help so many kids.

Ahh, thank you so much! I’m glad someone else thinks this too 🙂

I NEED TO PROMOTE THIS BLOG ASAP.

This blog is for people under the age of 15 years old who are questioning their sexuality or already identify as part of the lgbtq+ community. As someone who is ~barely~ above that age group, I really really wish I had had this when I was younger and going by simply “not 100% straight.”

Followers, if you are questioning or already identify and are under 15, I highly encourage you to check out this budding blog!

SIGNAL BOOST!!!!

Just a reminder, the Organization for Transformative Works (ie the people who run AO3) are having one of their periodic fundraisers. If you have the cash, please consider donating. If you’re an internet baby you probably don’t remember what it was like trying to find fanfiction in the dark ages of separate archives and geocities shrines and web rings. AO3 is literally the best thing that’s ever happened to fanfiction.

You can donate here.

This^

Please donate if you can, but definitely signal boost, either way.  Thanks.

I remember those dark ages.

Signal boost the hell out of this.

I ❤ AO3 & OfTW.

Project “Love Up Fic Writers” is go.

In light of the recent spike in negativity directed towards fandom writers I’m issuing a personal challenge to myself (and anyone else who wants to join) to perform at least one (1) act of kindness and/or encouragement towards fanfic writers a day for the month of May, particularly towards authors who are often overlooked or are not as well publicized.

Acts of encouragement include leaving comments, writing notes of appreciation, assembling rec lists, and creating fic illustrations, music, graphics, gifsets, etc, as well as other shows of appreciation not listed.  It can be as casual or labor intensive as your personal comfort level allows (I’m sure a lot of you guys do these things already lol) as long as the act shows your personal appreciation towards the writers in your life.

Note: Please don’t use this as an opportunity to lash out at popular fandom writers or perceived BNF’s – this is a challenge to uplift the fanfiction writing community as a whole and particularly those who aren’t told often enough how much we appreciate their efforts.

Ok you guys, we all know that Tumblr runs primarily in English

BUT WE ALSO KNOW THAT A SIGNIFICANT PART OF TUMBLR USERS ARE NOT NATIVE SPEAKERS

Here’s the deal: my first language is Italian. I know plenty of people on this website whose first language is Italian. Nevertheless, when we’re interacting with each other on Tumblr, we speak English.

I am not objecting to this system, it’s actually good practice for some people, to be able to speak a second language extensively.

BUT I HAVE A PROPOSITION FOR YOU.

Why not have a “Speak Your Own Language Day” where all of us exclusively speak in our native language?

(No but apart from the small rebellion from the US-centric and generally Anglophone-centric environment we got here, think about trying to speak to people from other countries via excessive use of Google Translate it’ll be a blast)

Ok, since this post has finally reached 100 notes I think it’s a good time to give a date, and since no one else has advanced suggestions I’m gonna do it

I’m proposing Wednesday 7th May, so the post has a chance to do a couple more laps and more people get a chance to participate (French Friday sounded hilarious, but I don’t wanna wait until next friday and this friday seems a bit too soon).

How it’ll work:

  • If you’re native language is something other than English, speak that!
  • If you have multiple languages you can pick from the choice is yous friend, speak all, speak one, whatever’s best for you
  • You’ll blog in your language all day: text posts, replies, tags (except triggers and organizational tags), the whole nine yards. Regardless of what language people choose to speak to you, you answer in your own.
  • Midnight to midnight according to your own time zone
  • English native speakers, if you wanna participate maybe you could practice a second language you’re learning
  • If anyone makes fun of anyone else for their language (and I’m including English native speakers that might choose to speak a second language on the day) I’m gonna come for you (◕‿◕✿)
  • The tag is gonna be #Speak Your Language Day if you wanna tag your posts with that!

Is this a thing again?

Lets make it a thing

UPDATE BELOW:

We’ve been getting pings and @’s all morning about ebooks-tree.com who seem to be scraping/taking stories off of AO3 and hosting them as PDFs and mobi downloads on their site; the site seems to be pulling from UrBookLibrary as well. They’re not reading your “do not copy/duplicate” notes on your AO3 fic; their bots are pulling things directly from AO3, without AO3′s authorization or assent. It looks like they are pulling from Wattpad too, again without authorization or assent.

While the Ebooks-Tree DMCA page seems to imply that you need a lawyer or other “authorized person” to submit a takedown notice, you don’t; you can do it yourself

As we’ve posted before, fanfic writers hold copyright in their stories, although not in lines/quotes from the works they’ve been inspired by, and because of that, fanfic writers can submit DMCA takedown notices, or have someone do it on their behalf. While this post isn’t legal advice (none of our posts on FYC are), you might want to consider using this template (well, the bolded bits) in telling ebooks-tree to take down your content

Your Name and/or Pseudonym as an e-signature (or the name of the person you’ve authorized to submit this request, with a slash before it and after it):
Link(s) to the unauthorized works (link to the pdf, the mobi and the page hosting all of it):
Link(s) to an authorized version of your work (whether on AO3, tumblr, LJ or somewhere else):
An email address of the submitter (include it again even if it’s in the header):
This statement: I have good faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
This statement: The information in the notification is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, that the complaining party is authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.

That’s it – that’s all they need to know – you can submit all the info via http://www.ebooks-tree.com/info.php?contacts with DMCA Complaint in the subject; you may wish to submit the same content to Google via this page, or to BING via this page

ETA: If you try to read  your own fics, they require you to sign up via a site called http://www.lazygame.net/ (lazygamenet on Twitter, corporate name is KH Media LLC of Delaware, their phone number is listed as the contact number for a bunch of different companies) and give your credit card info; we think that’s probably a very bad idea. You can send the same DMCA info to them at support@lazygame.net but it’s unclear whether they have the ability to remove anything from the ebooks-tree site. We called LazyGame directly and they said they are not affiliated with ebooks-tree but they are affiliated with TzarMedia, which seems to be some sort of back-end for ebooks-tree. Fwiw, TzarMedia isn’t doing well on the whole “trustworthy site” thing.

TzarMedia claims that “All TzarMedia content is licensed and legal for distribution and use.” We wonder what the FTC would say about that kind of false advertising.

This is way bigger than someone using a bot to pull fics; this is infringement in so many different ways.

(Fwiw, even though ebooks-tree claims that they comply with the Copyright Act, they aren’t compliant with the DMCA Safe Harbor rules, as they aren’t listed on the copyright.gov list of agents.)

You can also submit a complaint about ebooks-tree to CloudFlare, who hosts the site. Their DMCA page is at https://www.cloudflare.com/abuse/form – as a matter of law you do not need to include the legal name of the copyright claimant/the fanfic writer, but  you should include the pseudonym that the fic was posted under if you don’t want to include a legal name or address.

batsonthebrain, open-pandoras-boxnotababoonbrandishingastick and faleronofkingsreach, it looks like some of your work is on this site as well, under your AO3 names.

ETA: and a lot of hopedreamlovepray‘s fics. 😦

madlori, determamfidd, anythas-thoughts, plinys, some of your fics are on here under your AO3 names 😦
