Hrera, on her way!

I totally stole @houkakyou‘s trick, and put vinyl inside the belt, heh. I screwed up a whole bunch of very nice trim by dyeing it just a bit too long. Buggering fuck. Anyway, thank heavens for an old brown Venice Lace skirt I bought on a whim at an Op Shop, bc it is now doing stellar duty.

Now to decorate that skirt. Oh god. Two circle skirts, what possessed me, I do not bloody know.

(THE BROWN ONE HAS A CIRCUMFERENCE OF 6.6 METRES – adding that silk border nearly broke me, I stg)

Pictures in daylight! A bit better than last night.

(Reminder to self: get a better camera, your phone camera SUCKS)

so hey @houkakyou, @aviva0017, @the-dragongirl and all you wonderful Sansukh cosplay people…

I have joined you in the fun/crazy land of ‘ohshit i spent all that money and also I can’t feel my thumb from all the pins I’ve accidentally stuck into it’.

Hrera’s basic undecorated dress is done, whoohoo 🙂

I can’t hem this puppy until I have received the petticoat in the mail. It’s gonna be a very high hem – probably under the calf for the brown under-skirt, and a couple of inches under the knee for the blue. Those circle skirts are cotton drill and very full and heavy, so they’re a bit wilty and floppy rn. Gotta get my petti and see the silhouette before I can make any choices about it. Between the petti and the two high (and therefore lighter) layers, it should poof out quite a lot.

I haven’t begun the sleeves yet, so they are just sad tubes at the moment. Gonna go the cheap and cheerful lazy route and use sleeve armbands in gold. They should be strong enough to support some oversized faux fur cuffs (I hope).

There’s also going to be a LOT of decoration. I have batik silk to add to it, and lots of trims, and a brown woven leather belt.

Probably going to edge the blue overgown in brown/grey faux fur trim, because I am an idiot who hates having money or something *whimpers*

bonus: helpful cat

“Oh, were you cutting a circle skirt? Too bad.”

And here’s what the corset USED to look like a week ago, vs yesterday morning (shiny shiny late 90′s purple satin lmao)

this is not going to be a dress to wear in an Australian summer, I can tell you!

I’ve never cosplayed before, but I’m honestly really, really thinking about making my first cosplay outfit as one of the Sansukh OC’s, especially one of your amazing dwarves/dwarrowdams. Do you have any specific advice for cosplaying as one of them?

*GASPS*

aljsdhgfakljhsa oh nonnie! Thank you for considering it, I am so overjoyed that you’d think of cosplaying one of my throng!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

oh gods, advice aaaaaaaaah okay here’s some stuff I am currently keeping in mind as I sloooooowwwwwly (VERY SLOWLY) put my Hrera together…

  • For Dwarves, the body silhouette is turning out to be important. I don’t mean thinness or fatness or anything – I mean making yourself appear broader and shorter, as Dwarves are. If you’re in a dress, you can make your legs appear shorter by hemming it above ankle-height and wearing chunky boots. A high waistline and square broad neckline truncates your body, that sort of thing.
  • Fuller skirts (¾ or full circle) rather than narrower ones really does the trick, as do trousers that fall to the lower calf and thick tunics that fall to below the knee.
  • BOOTS ARE SO USEFUL: bulk them up all the way to under your knee! You’ll walk differently, too.
  • Decoration helps too: horizontal details or patterns all around the costume, or bulkier materials (such as faux-fur) on the shoulders or belt to draw the eye.
  • I’m covering an old corset to make my upper body look more square.
  • Similarly, the head needs to look a bit bigger than normal. So, it’s our moment to don a BIG WIG AND BEARD WOOHOOOOOO. All my girls have full beards 🙂 I got my beard here.
  • Sewing your wig’s updo or style in place with a curved needle and thread = fabulously easy and very very secure.
  • I’ve found a great historical costuming site with lots of cheats here: Hathaways of Haworth
  • You can always make padding part of the costume, if you decide to go that route! Though quilting can be a BITCH and very hot to wear for a long time.
  • I’ve found some great coloured bridal pettis on ebay, and lots of sari trims (awesome for details!!!). Curtain materials often have BRILLIANT Dwarvish patterns on them, and can be often be found cheaply at thrift shops. Cheap costume jewellery can be ripped apart and sewn on to stuff.
  • I’ve been glancing over all the concept art for Lady Dwarves from the Hobbit, quite a bit (they appear to really like hair-jewellery)

There are tons and tons of cosplay blogs with tips on wigs, padding suits, patterns etc. But when it comes to the dwarves of Sansukh, I would be a total IDIOT if I didn’t direct you to these amazing folks. They’ve ALREADY DONE IT, and so beautifully that it makes me gasp in awe on a regular basis.

@determamfidd I’m making a dwarf costume to put up in my shop, but I’m sizing it to my friend so we can do a photoshoot first – does this design strike you as any particular (hopefully black haired) sansukh character? Made for boobs but can be nb etc 🙂

Could be Kara, with black hair! Or perhaps Beri, Jeri’s mum 🙂

(I LOVE THAT DESIGN, ALSO – damn, you are a genius with the designering!!!)

Awe thank you XD it occurs to me that my model has a red wig as well – so I guess firebeards can also be considered?

OMG THEN SHE COULD BE DISITH

IT’S DONE WE’RE DOING IT, DISITH IT IS
