I recognise that the concept of visibility is problematic – trans women of colour, especially black trans women, and people who are not read as cisgender get attacked and killed for being ‘visible’. Sometimes, ‘invisibility’ can be a privilege and can mean protection.
But for me, visibility – TRUE VISIBILITY- is self empowerment, connecting with others like you, gaining inspiration from communities of people and your fellows, seeing sensitive and accurate portrayal in the media, creating your own media and finding ways to express yourself safely and authentically. This, for me, is what TDOV is about. I may not be ‘visible’ every day, but inside I live every day as a nonbinary trans femme woman of colour, and am coming into embracing that more and more…
