Georgian dancing was 300000% the inspiration behind the Axe-dancing tradition of the Firebeards š

Hi! Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I sent an ask about Midwinter a week or two ago, and I wanted to know if you got it? My internet it really iffy sometimes, I’ve had to resend asks to other people before because of it, so I wanted to know if it was because of my internet or if you were just really busy and hadn’t gotten to it (which is fine!). Sorry, I just wasn’t sure and thought it was best to ask. It was about Thranduil, his sons, and dancing, if that helps?
Hey Nonnie!
I just checked through everything from the past couple of weeks, and I canāt find your ask! I searched my emails as well, and it hasnāt arrived there either. I would love to chat about the dancing ideas, if youāre interested š
Those Georgian dancers totally need ceremonial weapons, and instead of being in perfect synch all the time, they need to do one where they build the dance around a combat routine, dodging one another by millimeters as they dance. In a fanfic it would have to be highly dangerous, and if you mess up you might get your head lopped off. Gimli would insist on dancing it with Dwalin and Legolas would watch with his heart in his throat, both turned on like mad and terrified as hell. Definitely.
SAMe LEGOLAS SAME

I would read this forever, I donāt mind saying. THIS PREMISE SOUNDS INCREDIBLE. Fab culture-building, Dwarves being shit-hot and awesome (and esp Gimli in particular) – plus bonus dancing Dwalin and a terriflustered Legolas?
*grabby hands* wanttttt
Georgian dancers performing like warriors
@kooriicolada THIS IS THE VIDEO! THE ONE I WAS LOOKING FOR!
So I was reading/listening to Midwinter and I was kind of wondering if you had any general ideas on what the elvish dance would look like and the kind of music it would be to? I really want to try and recreate it to the best of my ability!
Hey Nonnie – I hope you liked Midwinter š
I went for a little expedition through my blog just then, and do you know? I had totally forgotten that I had written this! Itās a general description of what I imagine Elvish dancing to look like, and the themes of the most popular holiday dances!
Dang, my memory is slipping, hehehhe.
Music-wise, I feel that the Elves would be more inclined towards collaborative music that ebbs and flows and never quite reaches a āformalā climactic moment as is common in Western classical tradition⦠I donāt think thereād be huge orchestras but instead small quartets, trios, chamber groups. A small group of virtuosos who know each otherās talents and thoughts so intimately that they are able to grow the music as they play it. Indonesian gamelan springs to mind, as does Bugaku (Gagaku) or Indian classical music. Music that takes its inspiration from the sounds of nature, too: the calls of birds and forest creatures, the long slow growth of trees, the sound of waves crashing upon a sandy shoreā¦
I donāt think theyād be into short music – even folk/history songs (such as the Lay of Luthien) go on FOREVER AND EVER oh god so many stanzas, and so perhaps instrumental music is the same: slowly building, forming and increasing in intricacy, undercurrents of passion that never pierce that sense of continuity and movement⦠before it breaks apart, melding again in a new configurationā¦
Vocal music is obviously a massive part of their lives: Legolas never stops singing, and neither does Galadriel! So thereād be different songs for different clans of elf, I guess⦠some would be formal and some would be āfolkā⦠the word āLayā suggests a bardic tradition, too.
Tra La La La Lally is an outlier and should not have been counted? IDK
We know that Maglor played harp. He also composed the lament āNoldolantĆ«ā⦠I have a feeling that a lot of the Noldorin songs are laments, tbh.
Sindar songs are likely āIāll get you for that, you dirty ratā lmao
I think that instruments like zithers and kotos would be popular: both need a lot of patience and delicacy to learn, and are incredibly evocative and beautiful. Too, we saw that harpist and flautist in Rivendell! So we can assume that those are instruments that they use commonly š
IDK, thatās just some random thoughts thrown together. I hope itās helpful, Nonnie! I am SO excited to see what you create, it is sure to be amazing! *waves pompoms*
Do you have any particular ideas for the different styles of dances other races? (On a similar vein, could you imagine dwarves belly dancing? All big skirts and coined tassles flickering in firelight?)
Ooooh yes, I have some ideas!! I put some of them into Midwinter, the holiday themed fic I wrote for the Appendices š
H MY SGOSHSKGSK BELLY DANCING DWARVES EEEE I love ā¤
Ori and Bifur would be rubbish at dancing together – always standing on each other’s feet and going the wrong way and ending up in fits of the giggles and not actually getting anywhere with this “dance” malarkey.
OH MY GOD THEY WOULD TOOOOO ā¤
Think about this: All the sappy Sansukh couples dancing to sappy music. (Also possibly kid terrors getting up to antics)
LONI AND FRAR OUT-SAPPYING EVERYONE BY A COUNTRY MILE
Gloin whirling Mizim around and humming off-key
Orla and Dwalin, close and soft and secret and silent
Gimli and Legolas – is this dancing, or fighting, or – oh for Mahalās sake, get a room
Bani and Baris, giggling and shy touches and looks from beneath lowered lashes
Bomfris and the Stonehelm with Bomfris leading, and an adoring Stonehelm swept helplessly in her determined wake
Bombur and Alris, grown so comfortable over the years that theyāre nearly a single entity as they move together
Bilbo and Thorin trading small barbed comments, even as the look in their eyes belies their sharpness, the reverence in their hands
Aragorn and Arwen, clinging to each other at last

*adds Georgian dancing to list of inspirations bc WOW WOW OMFG WOW*
In relation to the dancing post – Elves really like shows of dexterity and skill, so imagine sometime after the War of the Rings is over, Gimli realizes that Legolas has never seen an axe dance. *Any* axe dance. and Gimli happens to be very good at them.
*bites lip* UNGH. Okay, thatās absurdly awesome and I love it. A lot.Ā
you utter flirt, Gimli. ā¤
