OKAY – so to your question, though! Here is the placement of Dis’ marks. The inspiration, btw, came from the individual symbols/patterns used for each Dwarf in the film. You can see them here.
Balin’s – above her
right eye
Parents – on her
back (guarding her, she likes to think)
Vili – over her
heart
Oin – over her left
wrist
Dain – cheekbone, under her right eye, vertically opposite Balin’s (eventually)
Thror’s – right
collarbone
Hrera – right side of her neck, under
her ear
Thorin’s – right
side of her chest, opp Vili
Frerin – Right
shoulder
She wears no tattoo
for her sons: instead, she wears their beads in her hair, one for each of her
Lineage-braids either side of her temples. That way she gets to touch them
every morning and night.
You’ll spot that the vast majority of her marks line down her body on the right, from her brow all the way to her chest. They march down in a line, each one a silent memorial.

Orla absolutely bought one. She absolutely did. She makes it ‘talk’ back at Dwalin, her face impassive as always but her eyes dancing.

This has been such fun to work on. Completely colored and detailed by hair with Copic markers. Colors tweeked in photoshop to compensate for my lousy scanner. (for detail please go look at the full view)
I had the thought that maybe as she got older her hair did the opposite thing than Thorin’s; Her hair becoming silver with little streaks of black left in it. That has to be the most awkward sword hold in creation. I am so sorry. Information on each mourning marks and beads is going under the cut because it’s the exact same thing I put on the lineart.

I was playing around with spread out motifs for Balin, Oin, and Thror’s marks. This is something that they do a lot on their clothes and weapons, so why not tattoos.

It’s Dis! I have been working on this thing for daaayyysss. I kept having to tweek the sketch to make her proportions more dwarven. Determamfidd was kind enough to help me with the mourning mark placement on her. and despite the fact that you can’t see it on her(should be over her heart but her arm and hair is covering it) you can see Vili’s mourning mark (slightly cropped off sorry) up there in the corner. Now to ink and color!
