You’ve written that dwarves sport different kinds of body modifikations and decorations depending of social class, relationship status, profession, skills etc (Baris pierced lip for example) and I was wondering if you had any nice, headcanony list on different piercings, tattoos, hair beads and braids, jewellry etc and what they would tell about the dwarf wearing them that you’d be willing to share? It’s really interesting (and not gonna lie, it’s good att reference for drawing your characters).

Ohhh, I don’t really have a list? But I will tell you some of my ideas here, if that’s okay!

A piercing is an indication of class or status. The patterns of the piercing show the level and type of status. The area pierced also denotes a great deal about what that status is. For example, Baris’ lip piercing – in the middle of her lower lip, a heavy silver ring – denotes her status as a celebrated singer. To the left of the lower lip could mean a historian or storyteller. To the right of the lower lip, upper lip, a ball underneath the mouth and above the chin, a stud in the corner of the mouth – all these could mean different areas of expertise. A pierced tongue could mean a teacher or diplomat. Ear-cuffs would be lineage and nobility: social class, basically. Subdermals upon the back of the neck, on the chest, nipples, nose, all of that, plus other jewellery such as wristlets, necklaces, pendants, brooches, chokers – these all indicate a field of status. Most of these fields have to do with the profession: Dwarves respect skill 🙂

Not all Dwarves bother wearing them, but many do, and the indications are all generally known.

BRAIDS! I think beards and hair would be super-personal. Each Dwarf would choose their own style. There would be a lineage-clasp (as seen in the back of Thorin’s hair, or upon Kili’s) to denote royalty. You could have braids to show marital status – or lack of interest. It would be very personal, and up to the individual Dwarf to decide how much they wanted to declare publically or not. Braids would be a sort of wearable billboard, after all (Damn now I wonder if there’s a braid that basically says, ”Sexy single Dwarf, 145, seeks single Dwarf for fun and naughty times, no strings attached!”)

Colours! Beard dye sounds fun (totally inspired by Dwalin’s blue beard in the books, I’ll own up!). I thought that dyes could perhaps indicate gender expression. Jeri is nonbinary, and so their beard is dyed green. Bomfa is genderfluid, and usually has a stripe of several colours in their beard depending on whether today they are Bomfa or Bomfur and wish to be addressed as such.

Tattoos are made to mark special moments or people in that Dwarf’s life. Mourning-marks are made to remember the departed. Gimli got tattoos to mark his coming of age at 70 (he had sneakily gotten three mourning marks when he was underage, however! See Follow the Leader). Hrera got a tattoo on the back of her neck upon the occasion of her wedding.

So, these are some of the things I was thinking! I hope you like 🙂

Do you have any fancasts of your original characters?

determamfidd:

Oooooh, good question, Nonnie.

When I think up a character, I don’t really consider their facial features in much depth, to be honest. I concentrate far more on other attributes, such as relationships, behaviour, personality, likes and dislikes. Sometimes a prominent physical characteristic gets in there if it is relevant to who the character is (Barur’s giant moustache, Loni’s height, Jeri’s green beard) but mostly, I paint them in very broad strokes.

That said, there are a couple of actors who I consider very close to the characters! Perhaps only the hair or eye colour differs. No beards, unfortunately. They could all play the roles (in some cases, under a LOT of Dwarven padding and gear. Dwarven body ratios *headdesk*)

Orla – Grace Jones

(Orla is faaaaar bustier. But good goddamn.)

Hrera – Helen Mirren OR Sian Phillips

(waaaaaay too skinny, but the faces and the gravitas is JUST RIGHT. Hrera has hazel eyes, and light brown hair.)

Christina Hendricks – Gimris

Dawn French – Genna

(though Genna has ginger hair!)

Rose Leslie – Bomfris

(”you know nothing, Thorin Stonehelm”)

Rita Hayworth – Fris

Baris – Rebel Wilson

(Baris, however, has brown hair)

I’d love to hear other people’s ideas! Fan casting is fun 🙂

OH YES AND I SHOULDN’T FORGET:

Nali – Brian motherfucking BLESSED

Dets! What part of Middle-Earth are the Broadbeam’s from? (I may or may not be attempting to make a Broadbeam dumpling stew recipe. Shhhh…)

OOOOOOH. Tell me how it turns out! And if you want to, you can absolutely send me a recipe! Sansukh Cookbook ahahahaha

OKAY. I’m paraphrasing here, please tell me if I am remembering any of this wrong!

So. Broadbeams were one of the three Western clans of Dwarves. Durin of the Longbeards woke at Mt Gundabad and wandered in the Misty Mountains before he proceeded to build Khazad-dum.

(I’ve always felt that this makes the colonisation of Mt Gundabad by Orcs particularly awful for the Dwarves, aside from the military implications – Mt Gundabad would be a very sacred place. Durin slept there for long ages, and first woke there. OUCH. Jeez. Dwarves can’t catch a break.)

The other two Fathers of the Dwarves (Broadbeams and Firebeards) woke in the Blue Mountains, or Ered Luin. They built their cities there. The Broadbeams built Belegost, and the Firebeards built Nogrod.

Both were lost after the War of Wrath, in which half the Blue Mountains were tipped into the sea. Most of the surviving Dwarves fled to Khazad-dum and mixed with the populace there.

(In Sansukh, I am using the ruins of Belegost as the setting for the Longbeard refugees of Erebor).

For interest, the other four clans (Stiffbeard, Blacklock, Ironfist, Stonefoot) woke in the Orocarni (Red Mountains), to the East 😉

Only thing here that’s technically incorrect is that all we know canonically is that the Broadbeams and Firebeards built Nogrod and Belegost. We don’t know if each city belonged to one race or if they built/inhabited both together. The Nogrod-Firebeards and Belegost-Broadbeams division is technically fanon, though very reasonable fanon that I tend to also use.

That’s super ridiculously nitpicky but you asked XD Good answer otherwise (and man I hope somebody makes that recipe >.>)

Ah, thanks avi! ❤

SOUP. MMMM.

Hi dets! What are your favorite gems and metals? How would you hope to be adorned as a dwarf?

I love white gold and sapphires.

Seriously. I love them. Mr Dets bought me a white-gold ring w diamonds and a sapphire for our engagement.

He said it was to match my eyes. He is a giant goober ❤

So, were I a dwarf, I would still love blue gems I suppose. White gold, or silver in my braids. I would hope to be a musician in Middle Earth as well, and so I would have to keep my hair and beard braided out of the way of my bow and chinrest (I play violin), and probably get my lip pierced like Baris Crystaltongue, to show that I am a singer. Maybe have a particular bead that shows I am a teacher 🙂

courtugger:

Groin and Haban from Sansukh. He’s trying reeeeally hard to smile and be happy for Gimli…even if he loves an elf.

POOR GROIN hahahahaha, oh dear! I love it! His beard! HER BEARD. Damn serious beard respect for this family, whoa. Gloin makes so much sense now ❤
