so the Evil Overlord’s Classical Mixtape is currently going awf again, i’d nearly forgotten about that ! 

upside: Listening to the Rach C#m Prelude is as chill as I’ve been in AGES. 

Additional upside: I’ve since found a few awesome pieces that I would totally add to it, if I were putting it together today… perhaps I should start compiling Side B of the mixtape? I mean, Lux Aeterna by Paul Stanhope HAS to be on it. C’MON IT IS DAZZLINGLY GORGEOUS/CREEPY. 

Also Mironczarnia by Jakub Neske. DAT DESCANT. 

I listened to your playlist and “In the Halls of the Mountain King” gave me the strongest Thorin feels ever. I know it’s supposed to be an Evil Baddie song, but for me it’s more a song of Thorin, as he could’ve been if he survived the battle: King of an unapologetically mighty kingdom under the mountain, where the most secretive of races of Middle Earth rises above the poverty and exile and thrives again under the firm kindness of their charismatic king. It’s about their culture: (1/2)

It’s about dancing, singing, building and creating and simply coming together to be one again. It’s a rich and strange and extraordinary culture of strong people. And I can see Thorin, in the middle of this celebration, tears in his eyes and smile on his lips, watching his people sing and play and dance again. And he’s so proud, if little overwhelmed, because he did it, he brought his people home again. Goddamnit Tolkien, that’s what we should’ve had. (2/2) 

Oh my god, whoa. WHOA. I am always honoured to hear the reactions people have to music, because they’re always so subjective and personal… and this is beautiful.

I mean, yeah i put it on the Evil Overlord’s Mixtape, bc it’s hella fun and thumpetty-thump! I would probably put it on a Dwarven Classical playlist as well, bc… well, Mountain King. And well, intellectually I know that it tells the story of Peer Gynt running away from a mountainful of pissed-off trolls…

It’s a bit of a mix of the Big Obvious and the less-known, and I am really happy that people seem to like it! (I am still rocking out to that Schnittke, and the Liefs is pure nightmare fuel, I love it so much ❤ )

Because the Evil Overlord’s mix has been met with such enthusiasm I am now tentatively looking out for classical pieces that remind me of Tolkien’s Dwarves now yes, combining two things I love again – I dunno though, I sure hope my playlisting skills are up to it!

Could you make your “Evil Overlord mix” on Spotify?

Hey Nonnie! I’ve been really gratified by the response to the mix, it’s been so awesome! I’m thinking I could do something similar in future for other subjects/themes: Classical music for Dwarves, classical music for heartbreak, etc etc. I dunno, maybe!

I’ve never used Spotify, I am so sorry… and I simply cannot afford an account this year. We are budgeted down to the last cent at the moment!!!

But absolutely anyone is welcome to make the playlist on Spotify if they so wish, I am totally down for that.

Great list. Just can’t figure out what Spring is doing in there…

Rite of Spring is alternatively creepy, atmospheric and aaaaaangry. It famously caused a near-riot at its premiere. (I mean, Disney made it the soundtrack for a DINOSAUR BATTLE in Fantasia) Try it from this point! The whole ballet is EPIC… I compromised by only putting the first Act in 🙂

i’ve been listening to heaps of bombastic classical music lately, and half of them make me go ‘JOHN WILLIAMS DEF MINED THIS FOR STAR WARS MATERIAL’ (christ, just LISTEN to the Dvorak 9, 4th Movement…)

Thinking of making a Dark Overlord’s Mix/Playlist of classical music…  would anyone be interested in something like this? Something to listen to whilst planning the hero’s demise from your Evil Lair™ – or just writing a darkfic?
