Do you ever read a fanfic that is just so good it just sticks with you into days or even weeks after you’ve read it. Like you could be sitting in class or alone in your room and suddenly you’re just like, wow, that was a really good fanfic. Like it was really good.

@marlowe-tops

@determamfidd

*blushes* aww dang thank you.

(passing it on, though: @culumacilinte, jsyk, this was literally me with ‘Strange and Uncomely’ (and the sequel too); @scarletjedi‘s work stays with me CONSTANTLY; and finally a shoutout to icarus_chained’s dieselpunk AU ‘Northern Babylon’, which sent me into an AU worldbuilding daydream that lasted MONTHS)

For the ask thing I’ll do N I A ;)

Hi Nina! *hugs*

N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?

If anyone would write a Gigolas opera AU, I would probably go INTERSTELLAR WITH HAPPINESS.

(but i beg: please, please don’t make Legolas amazingly kickass and competent, and Gimli as mundane and boring as batshit, pleasepleaseplease i am TiredTM )

I: Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?

Nah, not really? I will read what I like, cheerfully and without guilt, heh. See you all in the Special Hell.

A: How did you come up with the title to [insert fic]?

For Sansukh, I thought of Gimli’s Dark-name first. I liked it so much, and thought it had a lot to say about the story as a whole, so I used it!

I had a HELL of a time finding the title for ‘Snowmelt’. Eventually I was re-reading my work in frustration, and one word stood out to me: “We are probably bathing in snowmelt.”

BAM, done, post, AUGH.

Oddly enough, it ended up being a really good title!

‘Some Other Beginning’s End’ was a quote – I was looking for quotes about firsts, because of the prompt! but I liked that one the best.

‘So Cloaked and So Crowned’ is a title that came out of nowhere. I can’t remember if it is a half-remembered lyric, or from a play, or WHAT. I can’t find it anywhere else, and so I am forced to conclude that it came wholly from the murky recesses of my brain.

‘From One Age to Another’ didn’t have a title until the very last sentence. Neither did ‘They Know.’

Irreconcilable Differences is one that had a title before I had a storyline! I wanted a divorce joke, heh.

A large part of me wants to ask EVERY SINGLE ONE PLEASE but I’ll sticks with DETS. (Though if you wanna do them all, do it. Please)

ILU POP THANK YOU ❤

Um, I’ve answered D, T and S, so here’s E! (I CAN’T FACE ANSWERING THEM ALL IN ONE GO – snippets is good!)

E: If you wrote a sequel to [insert fic], what would it be about?

If I wrote a sequel to Sansukh, it would be about the modern fanfiction Sisyphus, forever working upon a story that never seemed to end.

lmao, joking aside tho, I will be pottering in the Sansukh Appendices for some time, I think, but it will not have a sequel. The story is nearly finished, and when it is done, it’s done.

If I was to write a sequel to ‘Irreconcilable Differences’, though. Hmm. That has some appeal!

Possibly I’d write something about the Infinity Gauntlet stuff, when it comes out? I always enjoyed that TBP (it’s on my shelf right now, about three metres away). I liked the conversation between Hulk and Wolverine. ‘In our way, we’re both monsters, pal.’ Classic stuff.

I would also like to add more about Steve and the Buckster.

Possibly Stucky too.

My characterisation in IR of Steve is very influenced by the first Avengers film, and there’s been a whole crapton of meta and two more Cap films since then. I feel like I know him better these days!

I’d also add more friendship between Steve and Bruce, bc heck these boys have a lot in common.

Still Science Boyfriends, absolutely – I liked Bru/tasha and read fics about them before AoU came out. Then it came out, and URGH no – I completely disliked the ship afterwards. Which I thinks says that fic writers are better at writing both characters than Joss Whedon, frankly.

And developing the nascent relationship I left Natasha and Clint in at the end of IR could be fun.

We’ve all seen a lot of posts telling us we need to comment/kudos/reblog/love our fanfic authors or they will stop writing. I know, I’ve shared them.

But those posts never talk about what you, as a reader, get out of it. So here are my entirely selfish reasons that you should engage with fanfic (writers) that you love:

1. Free, quality content on your blog in the time it takes to smash reblog.

2. It’s good for you: people who “practice gratitude consistently report” higher levels of happiness, lower blood pressure, feel less lonely and other good shit.(x)

3. It’s not just writers who read those comments and reviews, you might find yourself a flail buddy. It just feels good to say “this is the BEST” and have someone else say, “I know, right?!”

4. The actual author might respond to your comments, follow you, start chatting to you or publicly thank you for encouraging them to write more.

5. If you start putting out fic rec lists, people might come to you asking for more recommendations. Who doesn’t like to feel like their thoughts and opinions matter?

6. Get so inspired you have to make art for a fic? Writers looove that – you could find they say thanks, share your art, use it as their header (on their blog or fic – seeing your picset at the top of a fic you love is just jandjdjbdudndj) or write you a fic.

7. And, of course, you’ll make a writer happy. And happy writers write more fic. Even if they never, ever engage with you, just knowing you’re there reading and caring means you get more fic to read.

8. All the ways we have of showing writers some love makes you a part of something. Fandom can be weird and wonderful, and at times utterly mental. But being in the club feels pretty damn great.

I love this very positive take on leaving reviews! Everyone wins, I agree. 🙂

I read so much fo’ free, the least I can do is give a well deserved shout out. It’s slightly selfish, because it means you may get more stories.

one of my favourite things about fanfiction is I can almost always find some way to contact the author, the actual human being who sat down and wrote this collection of words that I love so much and scream at them

and usually they scream back and it’s a wonderful exchange of happy

you just can’t do that with published authors. You can scream, but you’re screaming into a Lovecraftian void and they almost never have the chance to scream back

I love fanfic authors so much. thanks for letting me scream at you about things we mutually love

as a fanfic reader and writer I also love this thing

dude. as a fanfic writer this is like, my life. I’m not writing this for money I’m writing it so someone can message me and be like “THEN HE DID THE THING” and me go “YEAH OMG OMG I KNOW WHEN I WROTE THAT I WAS LIKE HE MUST TO THE THING!!!!”

it’s so…. it’s so needed to have this kind of contact.

Hey dets! I was just wondering, if you wrote a dedication page for sansukh, what would it say?

I had to think about this, very hard. My first thought was to dedicate it to perhaps my family, or the Sansukh Podfic Cast, and truly both deserve it for all their love and support. But then I thought: without a particular legacy, Sansukh would simply never have happened at all. So I changed tack. Here it is:

To the fic writers, past and present, who wrote us into the story.

Hi! I saw your fics on AO3 and thought you might be interested in our fanfiction documentary. We’re crowdfunding now on Kickstarter and we’re trying to get the word out. We’ve got 11 days left on our campaign and we still have a ways to go. It would be awesome if you could check it out and possibly contribute and share!

hey PSA lovely peeps – the kickstarter for this is here, and it looks very interesting and cool!

it’ll be nice to have a film about fanfic and fandom that doesn’t make us all sound like weird alien bugs 🙂
