could a dwarf presumably create artifacts greater than the silmarils (perhaps moreso) with ease?

urrrrrrrrrrrrgh Nonnie…!

Maybe not with ease! Feanor was a genius. He was probably the most gifted smith/creator/inventor who has ever ever lived in all the history of Arda. Tolkien goes out of his way to say that Feanor was the most amazing: “For Fëanor was made the mightiest in all parts of body and mind: in valour, in endurance, in beauty, in understanding, in skill, in strength and subtlety alike: of all the Children of Ilúvatar, and a bright flame was in him.

But the Dwarves have had geniuses too. A good example is Telchar.

Telchar was a smith of Nogrod, one of the cities in the Blue Mountains in the First Age. We know of three of his astonishing works. Angrist, the knife that could cut through iron. The Dragon-Helm of Dor-Lormin, which had enchantments on it to protect the wearer from wounds. And lastly, Narsil, sword of Elendil, which was re-forged for Aragorn and re-named Anduril.

He was pretty boss 🙂

But can you imagine the reactions of the elves in mandos to Legolas and Gimli? Like when Galadriel gives Gimli his gift and somewhere in Mandos Feanor is flipping the fuck OUT. (Oropher takes one look at Legolas and Gimli and has a an almost Thorin-style freak out)

HAHAHAHAHAHA

Feanor:

She gave what-what-what to a what.

Everybody else: (uh-oh)

Feanor:

Oropher: … my grandson is what-what a WHAT

everybody else: *whimpers* (oh help not again)

Oropher:

everybody else: (is it safe to come out now?)

Thingol: IS THAT A DWARF

everybody else: (oshit)

I really like the idea of – so, since elves do have to stay in mandos a little while before being reimbodied. Fëanor would be there. So, going off the other anon, every single elf reimbodied since Fëanor died have experienced Fëanor’s angry yelling *at least* once. (and, in the background, Maglor bangs his head against the wall while Maedhros eagerly demands the latest news of what Elrond’s gotten up to, what do you *mean* he had twin sons, this is great, finally he will know our pain)

LOLOLOLOLOL

Feanor – the Elves’ version of Cerberus. Love it!

(ohgod yes, Maedhros would be all *fold arms and sits back* SWEET SERENDIPITY BWAAHAHAHAH)

Sansukh has made me wonder: can elves watch those who are still living too? is there a star pool equivalent in the Halls of Mandos?? Bc on one hand: woah, sad feels everywhere! on the other hand: Feanor yelling angrily at EVERYONE. also would ghost!elves be able to see ghost!dwarves and vice versa or are there different levels of ghost?

Awww, Nonnie! Thank you! It’s such fun to consider this stuff, I hope you enjoy!

Actually, I am considering something quite different for Mandos. We know from Tolkien that because Elves are ‘tied to the world’ (can’t remember the exact phrasing rn) unlike most of the mortal races whose spirits move on to some place unknown, Elves’ spirits stay put and cannot leave except in exceptional circumstances. They are re-embodied after a time (most of them – not Feanor yet hahaha) and sent back to live in Aman.

Unless you’re Glorfindel

So, I think??? I could be wrong idk – that this means that the majority of Elves who have lived in Middle-Earth are eventually re-embodied in Aman, and so would have to find a way of watching stuff going down from their cities there.
