Hobbit clothes were very strange. They fastened with buttons at the waist, instead of flys, and their waistcoats added little in the way of either warmth or utility. Although Gimli had to admit that at the very least the waistcoats didn’t impede movement (and Dori had found a way to add clever little pickets to the inside where Gimli could hide away various necessities), he found the amount of buttons simply ridiculous. He growled as the tiny button slipped from his fingers again.
In Sansukh Chapter 43, we meet some exiled Orocarni dwarves. Yall know how much I love exiled Orocarni dwarves, so I wrote a thing about exiled Orocarni dwarves with the two new characters we meet, Askhar and Orla. As ever, these belong to @determamfidd, I only provide the enthusiasm from the sidelines.
TW: blood, violence, swearing
“There
is nothing – I repeat – nothing to fear, if we give Sauron
no reason to cause us harm!”
Clamour
broke out once again among the Courts of the Blacklocks, high within
the upper ring of Ghomal.
“It’s
false – it’s heresy – cast him out!” shrieked one dwarf, rising
to their feet, their eyes flashing, and with a great roar of
agreement from their fellows around them.
Hanay’s
eyes narrowed and his chest puffed up like a vulture settling down to
judge a potential meal.
“Really,
Askhar, you do yourself a disservice yelling like that. This is the
Court of the Queen.” Though Councillor Hanay’s voice was steady and
his face bland, the hint of bared teeth behind his thin lips belied
his true feelings.
i wanna punch Hanay and then shave him bald, what an absolute EVIL ARSEHOLE holy shit I hate him so MUCH

oh boy, Droy, you utter fuckwit. Seriously, he doesn’t learn, does he?? DO NOT INSULT KHEL IN FRONT OF NARVI. DO. NOT. you’d think he’d have learned better not to be an insulting little turd after the first time..!
and the concept is FANTASTIC oh my god, there needs to be a list of Rules for the Halls. We have 6 now, thanks to your incredible imagination – these are total solid ithildin-plated brilliance! Thank you, thank you SO SO MUCH!!!
1) Don’t bother questioning where things came from. It was never going to get an answer.
2) Don’t fawn over Durin unless one wanted to get a solid headbutt.
3) Try not to bring up any large scale massacres in conversation if it was at all avoidable. Someone nearby was surely to have died in one of them and not all were well adjusted to this fact.
4) Mahal really shouldn’t be disturbed unless it was important. (Note that this rule was willfully ignored quite often by certain Dwarves who were looking to get something. Luckily, Mahal was so understanding.)
5) Holding grudges for things that happened in life was probably ineffectual so should be dropped… eventually.
aaaaand the 6th Rule? :DDD YOU GOTTA GO READ THIS. IT IS AWESOME!!
It’s a a sweeping fic in the lotr/hobbit fandom that retells the story from right after Thorin’s death all the way through the events of the trilogy (with more to come following). The breadth of this story is matched by its depth. It fills in missing spaces, like all of the women from the line of Durin, what happens during the War in the North, and quite or over looked scenes following the Fellowship.
And I really have stayed up developing and chatting about fantheories about this fanfic with several other people!
It really lends itself to it because it likes to dig into the cultures which just makes you itch to keep expanding it! And it has dozens of original characters that fit so well into the narrative that you forget they aren’t canon! (I frequently forget that there isn’t a canonical mother for Gimli, for example.) They are full characters of all different backgrounds, genders, orientations, and there are even some non-neurotypical characters which all makes me beyond happy. And the best part? They feel natural. They are balanced. And it feels like they are there because naturally people like them would be there.
I can’t recommend it enough, and if you haven’t read it, I would definitely suggest doing so!
An attempt at collecting hobbit fic that’s set in Hogwarts. The list is biased in favor of a.) WIPs that have more than 1 chapter posted, b.) fics that put hobbit characters into the Hogwarts setting (i.e. a hobbit character is the protagonist, not Harry & friends), and c.) works that aren’t chapters of a story collection.
Impartial Judge (Explicit) by bigmamag (Gigolas, Kiliel, Bagginshield – both Hobbit & LOTR characters featured)
The Triwizard Tournament brings Europe’s three largest wizarding schools together for the competition of a lifetime. Gimli had only planned to tag along as Krum’s entourage, but is unexpectedly chosen as Durmstrang’s champion. When the son of Thranduil is chosen as Beauxbatons’ champion, Gimli seeks a way to bring him down a peg or two, but unexpectedly finds something completely different.
(one of my fave fics, btw – I rec it with every cell and fibre of my being, it is so brilliant and well-written and engaging!)
Thorin Oakenshield slowly wakes to the sounds of Bilbo and his nephews softly talking, colder and heavier than he has ever been in his life, but before he can get a word out Bilbo is punching him square on the nose. Quite rightly, as it turns out, because he’s been dead for a week and has just sat up in his tomb with no warning whatsoever.
Following the aftermath of the Battle of the Five Armies where Thorin must fight with his own guilt and mind over his choices and what they mean and meant, where he must decide whether or not to rule, and how to live with himself after dying. Focusing on many different characters and relationships, as well as building on the lore of Erebor and Middle Earth. A story about coming home.
