426,107 words and 40 chapters and still ongoing Sansûkh is a beautifully written story where Thorin Oakenshield wakes up in the halls of his ancestors and is given a gift from his maker that makes it so he can talk to the living through their most sub conscious thoughts, some however hear him better then others and no one can hear him easier then Gimli. This story is absolutely wonderfully written and so heart breakingly sad at points but unbearably joyful at others that at times I am left both crying and laughing at the same time, no story has ever made me cry so much. I just had to rec this fic for the first week before any others because I have never read any others that struck so deeply as this and it isn’t even done!!!!! I imagine it will make me cry many more times before it is done with me. It is truly my favorite fanfiction and if I could have it as an actual book to carry around, though it would make quite a large one, I would carry it everywhere. I really implore anyone who is a LOTR fan and love dwarves (there is so much dwarf love!!! Dets really does their research!!) to read this, it is really worth the time it takes.

I mostly only read Kiliel fics, but exceptions had to be made for these Hobbit fics:
- Sansukh by @determamfidd. This is the mothership of all Hobbit and LoTR fics! Unless you’re new to the fandom or have been living without internet or not into fanfics, there’s no excuse for you not to be reading this. I’m not a Bagginshield or Gigolas shipper, but this one made me one, at least for this story. There’s also an appendices of side stories that are excellent and there’s some incredible fanart and music, too.
- Rites of Passage by @eldritchmage. Fili & Kili fic. This one is set when they’re in their mid to late teens. There were some bits in the beginning that were very upsetting, but the adventure they’re on is a great ride. This fic is part of the Kili and Tauriel series, so take a look.
- Under new management by frostyjack. Fili & Kili fic. Rites of Passage inspired me to find other Fili & Kili fics, so I did a quick search and found this. The writing is excellent and the characters are utterly engaging. This made me teary in several places. Fili and Kili aren’t brothers, and there’s a lot of hurt!Kili. It’s set in modern day Cambridge, Fili is at university, and Kili has been taken in as a foster child. Some parts are very upsetting (there’s sexual and physical abuse, PTSD, panic attacks) so it may not be for you.
- Peredhil by @magnoliamagic (maggiemaye). This one is more about Kili and Tauriel’s children, although there’s quite a bit of Kiliel in it. This fic is part of a series called Under the Mountain where Kili and Tauriel and their children are the main characters. You should read all of the fics in the series!
- Dare You To Move by @montgirloflumatere (Mont_Girl_Of_Lumatere). Fili/Sigrid fic. I’m not a huge fan of Fili and Sigrid, but this one is really well done. I love the portrayal of Sigrid in this one.
- Surviving by @purajobot935. Fili & Tauriel fic. Kili is dead, but he’s still an important presence in this story. Fili is king and invites Tauriel to live at Erebor. I’m reading it for the Fili & Tauriel relationship. There aren’t too many fics with the pair of them and this one is a pleasure to read.

The Myriad Adventures of Goblin Mutant and Graceless Cat by chapstickaddict 23k Gigolas, Kiliel, Bagginshield, Really fantastic everybody lives fic where Kili and Tauriel run away and Fili goes searching for them only for Legolas to join him and then add in Gimli and it’s just so good. SO GOOD. And fun! With some heavily implied Bagginshield!
The Naming of Hobbits by Margo_Kim 10k Bagginshield In which Thorin doesn’t know Bilbo’s name and does everything under the sun to find out except for actually asking and Fili and Kili are no help. This fic CRACKS ME UP SO MUCH
Into the West by Cinderstrato 108K Bagginshield, Kiliel, AMAZING AMAZING! Post Bilbo and Frodo sailing to the west and Frodo trying to fix himself and save Bilbo while Thorin and dead dwarf Company do the same. So long, so worth it, fantastic world building, you won’t want it to end.
Gladly a Fool with You by bendingsignpost 10k Bagginshield explicit Omg okay so the first Laketown shenanigans fic I read of this pairing and oh man I love it so much. Thorin and Bilbo are drunk and you feel like you’re getting drunk with them and Thorin’s so obvious and Bilbo’s kind of oblivious until he’s not.

Okay I know this is recced by everyone but I started reading it early on in my bagginshielding days and it got me to love all the dwarves and dwarf culture (such respect for them, on the level usually reserved for elves) and to actually read the lotr books (i know i’m trash, i’d read the hobbit but tom bombadil put me off lotr for yEARS). really opened my eyes to all i’d been missing out on. ALSO MADE ME SHIP GIGOLAS.
Children of the Soulmark by squire 93k explicit FUCK THIS IS SO GOOD! Really well done soulmate au where Bilbo and Thorin meet way before canon but it’s amazing and heartbreaking and lovely and hot. Just go read it!
There Lived a Hobbit by TrueRed 230k explicit. Oh man so damn good! First part, Thorin gets his hair chopped off in Mirkwood and Bilbo helps him pick of the pieces. And then part 2 is post botfa. I really love how REAL they are in this fic, they argue and fight and it’s so great. Cw rape mention for the first one. Read the warnings!
