Now I’m thinking about Nain and Daeris talking with Vili and Fris, and Dain with Thorin and Fili and Kili -trying to figure out ways to make the reconnect with their parents/son easier and less awkward. It helps a little, both in terms of suggestions and knowing that other people have faced the same problem.

Oh my god, Fris and Thrain would be the PERFECT people to talk to about this. Fris is just so emotionally intelligent and competent, and Thrain has learned (the hard way) not to be impatient. So he knows not to push people, to let things unfold at their own pace and to give people an undemanding space.

I bet Vili went to them as well, for advice… and yeah, Nain and Daeris would probably have a quiet word with them as well.

And yeah, I think Dain and Thorin and the lads would probably have a beer or two together, and Fili would tell them how it felt to realise that he looked like his father and like Frerin. How he was both happy to have Vili back, and angry that he died and left them in the first place. And Kili will tell them how hard it was to begin calling Vili ‘Dad’, and how both of them still look to Thorin for approval instead of their father. How Fili often accompanies Vili on his visits to Erebor each morning. The day Vili showed Kili how to carve runestones.

And Thorin will take a sip of his drink to hide the emotion in his eyes (it doesn’t work) – and Dain will grumble that it’s just so hard to let them help, he’s not a Dwarfling anymore and he’s been standing on his own feet… uh, foot… for centuries, and it feels.. wrong. And Thorin will latch onto the change of topic gratefully and laugh, and tell Dain that he should be grateful he does not have Queen Hrera for a grandmother. She still treats Thorin like he is all of twenty-two years old.

Fili’s last scene

Not an easy day  for a scene which is not very easy to shoot.

In spite of trying to make light-hearted comments and dead faces at request, Dean has indeed a hint of melancholia in his usually bright blue eyes.

Moreover he was  caught half way through Fili’s complex make-up, with additional scars, real blond hair mingling with fake braids held by metal pins, long beard and shaved moustache.

Later on, the Company will say goodbye to their friends, and the actors will play it along the haunting music by Giacomo Puccini from  his Madama Butterfly, the Coro a Bocca Chiusa (Humming Chorus), which will make everything even more emotional.

And then, Peter Hambleton...

Gloin, the father of a son almost the same age as Fili.

Fíli (@morvidra) and Kíli (@liketotessecret) sing Without You from Rent.

I think we’re competing to figure out who can pick the most homosexual song for us to duet.

Anyway, @determamfidd @grimminsanity, these are always for you. Fee, you’re remarkable for putting up with me randomly messaging you at three in the morning about our next duet and then telling you that I’ve already recorded it. ❤ It may not be my line, but #Ibelongwithmybrother too.

oh darling Fee and Kee, you do a stellar job of this duet! Awwwwwww, i love to love your love, my dears. *hugs* Thank you, as ever!

Idk if you watch Steven Universe, but I totally get the vibe that Vili is really a lot like Greg Universe, you know? Really nice guy who keeps trying so hard to connect with his son he can’t fully understand/be there for… Idk, he seems really chill in the fic and also so sweet and deals with the fact that he’s not the actual father figure of his sons so well in such a respectful way <3 all of my love to Vili

I haven’t actually ever watched SU – though I have seen a LOT of it on my dash (and oh my god, Steven himself, what a little cutiepie) and I love the look of it, and the messages. Definitely something I will watch eventually!

AWWWWW GREG, he is a sweetie from all I have seen! Yeah, Vili is a lot like that. He’s very low-key, but always tries in his understanding and understated way to be there for his lads. He’s absolutely aware that, although they have learned to love him and call him ‘dad’, he wasn’t able to be that for them. Thorin was their father in all but name.

Vili doesn’t have any animosity about that, or hold onto any poisonous jealousy for Thorin or anything. He’s a sensible Dwarf, he’s perfectly aware that spite and jealousy would just drive a wedge into everything and eventually the boys would withdraw entirely away from him – well, who wouldn’t?

Vili looks after Thorin in his warm, humorous and low-key way as well. He worries. They’re unlikely friends. He’s incredibly grateful to Thorin, for being there when he could not, for ensuring that the lads knew what it felt like to be loved by a father-figure. His priority is not ever himself, or his own feelings.

Vili is a Good Dad, even though he isn’t the one who filled that role in his boys’ life. 🙂

The fiddle was very new, and it sounded it: raw and greenish and too alive. Time and use would mellow its tone and make it an extension of his arm. For now, though, it was unfamiliar and awkward.

Fíli tightened the pegs, tuning it carefully. Then he tucked it beneath his chin. It was lighter than he had expected, and his moustache-beads clacked against the red-stained wood. He ran his hand along the fine, smooth neck and over the carven scroll. It would be a good companion.

“You like it?”

Taking a breath,

Fíli put the bow to the strings. Normally he played jaunty jigs or reels: songs for singing and dance and drinking.

But this fiddle wanted to soar and to weep, it appeared. The too-sharp tone began to soften, to float through the great stone Halls.

Fíli

closed his eyes as he played aimlessly, letting his fingers do as they would. The tune the fiddle pulled from him was a little sad, a little brave – and not unlike some other song he could remember singing in the warm glow of a Hobbit’s hearth.

“That’s pretty. What is it?”

“I don’t know, just came to me then,” said Fíli, and he lowered the new fiddle. “Thank you. It’s a beautiful fiddle; I shall treasure it.”

“Happy name-day, grandson,” said Frís, and she kissed his cheek, before pressing their foreheads together. “Happy name-day.”

(obviously, this is set in the Sansukh-universe, so EVERYBODY IS DEAD, etc etc. That is indeed me playing the violin, a tune I chucked together in about 2 minutes, a sort of variation on ‘Misty Mountains’ I guess. Please be kind, I am super out of practice! Written for Khazad October omfg dain’s day is tomorrow YESSSSS)
