ooooh, Nonnie. IDK, that almost demands an entire fic in itself! For a start, our little Dawning Sun wouldn’t be precisely the same character during the time of the Quest as he is in Sansukh. In Sansukh, he is frozen at the time of his death at 48 years old. But if he had lived, he would have been 190 during the Quest. That’s a very long time, and goodness knows he would have changed over all those years.
I am pretty sure he would have gone on the Quest, even so. I can’t see his devotion to Thorin ever wavering. But what sort of Dwarf would he have become? He would have lived through the same sort of pain as Thorin and Dis, would have suffered enormously and wandered. Also, he would be Thorin’s heir, something to remember… perhaps he would have become more responsible, what with all the expectations that involved.
I like to think he would have remained a fairly optimistic, laughing sort of fellow, despite all that he would have seen and endured. He is very good at seeing to the root of a problem, even as a raw adolescent, and so perhaps he and Balin would have been the two pillars that Thorin leaned on for advice.
(I also think he would have taken more after Fris’ side of the family. He isn’t martial, and didn’t gain the height that Thorin and Kili and Dwalin did… I think he would have been about Gloin or Dori’s height, fairly average for a Dwarf)
It would be so different for everybody to have Frerin in their lives, all the way through. Fili and Kili, knowing their joking, laughing, perceptive golden uncle from the very start, goodness. Balin having a second voice to rely on, Dwalin knowing that someone else is watching Thorin’s back as well, Dain knowing it isn’t just himself and Thorin who understand the weight of all they carry, Oin ganging up with Frerin to badger people to REST when they are sick…
So, this is only referring to my version of Frerin – the 48yo little fellow with the brave smile and sharp eyes – but it sounds like a great premise! Nonnie, I would totally read that fic 🙂
