I might have talked about this before, but I love that LOTR doesn’t shy away from Frodo being traumatized.

In the books, Frodo begs his companions to hasten as they approach Weathertop and never looks in its direction as they pass. In the movies, he suffers a violent flashback at the sound of the Witch-King’s shriek.

In both books and movies, he doesn’t talk about ordeals, or if he does it’s only a vague description. He withdraws from his kinsmen and even his friends. On the anniversaries of traumatizing events he is almost completely non-verbal and hugely out of sorts.

Tolkien (and, by extension, Peter Jackson) could have left that ambiguous, but he chose for Frodo to blatantly develop PTSD, and it’s handled gently and with respect, all without stripping Frodo of his humanity. I truly love that.

But at the same time, Frodo is a surprisingly effective force.  It’s clearly he who is in ultimate authority during the Scouring of the Shire : he takes advice from Merry and Pippin and Sam, but it’s Frodo calling the shots.  It’s Frodo who insists there shall be no killing of hobbits if it’s possible to avoid it, it’s Frodo who wades into a battle between angry hobbits and Sharkey’s Men, without once drawing sword, to stop the hobbits killing Men who try to surrender.   It’s Frodo who becomes Deputy Mayor of Michel Delving in order to sort out all the damage done.

Even at the end of LOTR, Frodo is  a surprisingly effective person, despite his trauma.  And then once everything is sorted out, more or less, he gives it all to Sam and walks away.

Finished. For @determamfidd and her epic Sansukh.

and omg Barad-Dur in the background SO PERFECT YES BECAUSE YES OH MY GOSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHH

thank you! Thank you SO SO MUCH!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

hi, there, Dets, queen of the hobbit/lotr fandom! I know that your main ship is Gigolas, and I love it, too, but I was wondering how you felt about the pairing Sam/Frodo, just you personally? I myself am sort of up in the air about it, and I just wanted to know your opinion. No need to answer if you don’t feel comfortable, however! I hope you have a great day/evening, and thanks for all your hard work!

hoo boy, I ain’t a queen, I am some sort of permanently bemused court musician 🙂

Awww, I do enjoy Sam/Frodo, yes indeed I do! I think that the love they have for each other is as obvious as the noses on their faces, frankly. I don’t go out of my way to read it, but I like it when I come across it!

Though, going a bit deeper – I prefer the Sam/Frodo/Rosie OT3. That’s because I really enjoy it when Rosie is given more character time. I often see her shunted to one side, ignored or fridged, or turned into a nagging baby-machine, which is not so fun to read. I like her being a part of it, as on-board and as involved as the other two.

I also kindasorta hc Frodo as Ace. The way I feel about it is: Frodo and Sam are homoromantic af together, Rosie and Frodo are QP cuties, and Sam and Rosie are physical lovers.

That’s only my flight-of-fancy, though! Any interpretation of Sam/Frodo is generally lovely and soft and sweet.

“You’re out of grapes”-BWAHAHA. Oh, Dis, mithril heart and spine. Okay, I’ve never had such emotion reading the part about Arwen and Frodo, or Gimli and Eomer resolving their conflict before. So many feels! ARAGORN REMEMBERED BOROMIR’S PROMISE OF PENNANTS!! Pippin + Glorfindel = headaches. Dain understanding Hrera better than Balin? Priceless. Oh my heart. Breaking along with the fellowship. You. Left. It. On. A. Cliffhanger. This will either go very badly, or very silly.

AHHHHH asldkjfghlajhsdfa YOU ARE MADE OF PUREST UNTARNISHED AWESOME, THANK YOU SO MUCHHHH

heheheh Gimizh ❤ my tiny terror child! DIS dear lord I am so cruel to her and she is so damned. awesome.

Eeeee so thrilled you liked the way I took the canon sections and twisted them! The Frodo and Arwen meeting has always struck me as a bit too loose, so I pulled it tighter, and the Eomer-enters-as-King moment has always felt too pat. I mean, the guy was 3rd Marshall of the Riddermark – Theodred was the one groomed for the crown, not Eomer. So, I made it more about him going ‘WHOA THIS IS REALLY. REALLY OVERWHELMING.’ – and then the Gimli scene is his escape from that, heh! (ALSO GIMLI YOU SMOOTHIE. ‘My heart is given to the morning’ YOU SMOOTH SMOOTH BASTARD.)

YEP, THAT’S RIGHT. BOROMIR’S ‘WHITE TOWER OF ECTHELION’ SPEECH. I WENT THERE. I REFERENCED IT.

(“I would see the glory of Gondor restored. Have you ever seen it, Aragorn?

The White Tower of Ecthelion, glimmering like a spike of pearl and silver, its banners caught high in the morning breeze. Have you ever been called home by the clear ringing of silver trumpets?”)

BECAUSE BOROMIR. THAT’S WHY. ARAGORN DID NOT EVER FORGET.

oh you just know Pippin and Glorfindel ended up dancing on the table together at some point. 😀

HEHEHEHEH DAIN. Balin is clever af, but Dain understands people :)))

*ducks* ooohboy. I’m working as fast as I can on the next one! ALSO THERE WILL BE A SONG. I hope a new song makes up for the cliffie! SORRYYYYY NONNIE SORRY.

*hugs* you are absolutely wonderful – augh thank you SO SO much!!
