There’s this awesome new WIP fic called ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay’ (no, not that one!) by TAFKAB Where everybody lives but Thorin is still nuts so to humiliate him Thranduil offers up a years worth of supplies in exchange for a Dwarf of Durin’s line going into servitude for 77 years.
He didn’t expect anyone to agree so when Gimli volunteers and he doesn’t actually want a slave he gives him to Legolas.
So far it’s really good, both Legolas and Gimli acting as one would expect at that point but slowly (very, very slowly) warming up to each other. It sort of implies that it’s going to go through the war of the ring so that should be interesting. Though I can’t remember if 77 years is within that time or not. (It is in the movie verse but I think it just catches in the book verse) in any case this is an au so they might have the war of the ring earlier.
In any case the way things are going they are going to be AT LEAST friends before the 77 years are up. (I have this little thing in my head where they go to the council together and are all best of buds and everyone being all WTF?!)
In any case, it’s awesome so far so check it out and give the author some love.
We have heard tell that Legolas took Gimli Gloin’s son with him because of their great friendship, greater than any that has been between Elf and Dwarf. If this is true, then it is strange indeed: that a Dwarf should be willing to leave Middle-earth for any love, or that the Eldar should receive him, or that the Lords of the West should permit it.
