Gimli-fam at Minas Tirith has another logical conclusion… Faramir is familie’d. Like, so hard. He gets kid snuggles and parent chats and sibling advice. So much family. And the keep doing it after they leave? So, Mizim sends him socks and cookie recipes, Gimris reminds him to eat his veggies and to put on his hat. Gloin talks about that nice ranger boy to the people at Erebor and sends good people for trade to Ilithien.

YESSSSSSSS

HAPPY DAY OF BIRTH!!!! Maybe one day after the whole thing is over and Gimli and Legolas are married (AS WELL THEY SHOULD BE), they’ve been traveling for a while and it’s Gimizh’s birthday and he wishes out loud on his candles that Uncle Gimli and Uncle Legolas could be there and then there’s a “What an interesting wish there, lad” “Indeed, meleth nîn” from behind him and suddenly Gimizh is in this giant hug with his uncles and there are tears and everyone is happy and the party is a huge hit

everything about this is just *heaves a happy, teary sigh* oh, thank you.

Another trope I’ve noticed in dwarf fanfic is that there’s so much interspecies…. just about every elf wants a dwarf wants an elf… no wonder their races are dying out and leaving the world to men! X-D I keep imagining various dwarflings announcing to their parents “I want to marry an elf just like Gimli!” And the parents are all “NOOOO! SOMEBODY HAS TO CARRY ON THE RACE….”

PFFFT

Regular Dwarven ‘vacations’ to the Shire and to Lothlorien/Mirkwood/Rivendell… all of them in their best outfits and beads, beards neatly combed, smiling just a liiiittle too much…

Gimizh is in Mina’s Tirith and the Rohirim just ferociously adopt him. Eowyn is all <3 tiny dorf babbu since she met him when he was following Gimris around. Eomer is all!!! Tiny Gimli!! And there is cuteness, because Gimizh decides that Eomer is Good People. Gimizh also sneaks Faramir candy because he is sad.

OH MY GOSH THOUGH

Gimizh deciding that Eomer is a Top Bloke and Good Sort means…

yet more competition between Gimli and Eomer hahahahaha

So … what if most of Gimli’s family goes with the Ereborean contingent to Aragorn’s coronation. So awesome and awkward. Gimris is squawking like a chicken. Mizim is mothering people aggressively. Gimizh is everywhere – twice. Gloin is about to burst because people are constantly telling him how awesome Gimli is.

AWWWWWWW

Lmao, Gimris and Eowyn in the same room might just be more determined warrior/healer ATTITUDE than Middle-Earth can cope with

Gimizh would be spoiled rotten, good gracious, everyone marvelling at one of the rarely-seen Dwarven children, he’s so CUTE, Gimli would be so PROUD

Dori is aggressively parenting. His. Entire. Extended. Adoptive. Family. He knits ferociously – Dain has so many pig-themed sweaters. He bakes all the time (Dwalin complains that he has to exercise for an extra hour every day to work off the cookies). He fusses perennially about how people look – Dis is sure that Dori worries more about her wardrobe than she does. Dori also has stashes of care items, and will fish out cough drops or hankies or mittens or dry socks at the barest hint of need.

*hearts in eyes*

Yes. All of this. All of it.

What do your dwarf eyes see? <— I keep wondering. D&D dwarves have "infravision" and can see in the dark. Obviously Tolkien's differ from D&D or gaming stereotypes. What do you think their capabilities are? How do you feel about "fire touch" as portrayed in The Hobbit, where the one dwarf holds up the cylinder of glowing metal in his hand? What other special stereotypical racial abilities do you think dwarves do/don't have?

Ooooh, well, that’s a great question, Nonnie!

I like to think that Dwarves have EXCELLENT vision in the dark, myself. Not necessarily in bright sunlight, however… huh, maybe their pupils just don’t contract enough, perhaps, idk, I am no good at anatomy. But it’s such a great concept!

Stone-sense is another one I like. Being able to feel/sense directions underground, like certain animals are able to. Perhaps this comes from a sensitivity to magnetic pressures?

Echolocation would also make sense for an underground race, too. People in our own world are able to learn to use it! So maybe this is a learned skill, and not intrinsic to Dwarves as a species.

FIRE TOUCH YIIIIIIISSS I do like this concept! Myself, I wrap this idea up with Tolkien’s writings about Dwarves being heartier and more resistant to illness, injury and age than the other mortal races of Middle-Earth. Mahal knew his children would have to face Morgoth’s evil creations, and so he made them INCREDIBLY durable.

We know that Dwarves can run for a hell of a long time while carrying ENORMOUSLY heavy loads. In the Hobbit, we get the lines: “The Dwarves are exceedingly strong for their height” and also “the Dwarves can carry very heavy burdens, and nearly all of Dain’s folk, in spite of their rapid march, bore huge packs on their backs in addition to their weapons.” (The Clouds Burst”). So, Dwarves are BLOODY STRONG, can carry a shit-ton of weight, and still they can keep going for days.

whoop there’s the reason i get irritated about Gimli’s cross-country line in TTT

All of the Dwalinuls take a bit after Dori? Wee Thorin is all sharp objects and knitting. Balinith is all For Science! And nice clothes and tea. Frerinith is fussy and also tea.

YES THEY DO, ALL OF THEM – thank you so much, I am so HAPPY you noticed, Nonnie! I have given all of the kids some of Dori’s influence, because I think he would have been very close to them all. Most trusted babysitter, honorary uncle, etc. So they’ve all got some characteristics and traits that stem from that proximity… all except Gimizh.

Wee Thorin is protective LIKE WHOA. Also knitting. And sighing.

Balinith is orderly, tidy and also SCIENCE, but he’s got a streak of sarcasm in him a mile wide. Sly insults ftw.

And tiny Frerinith is A FUSSY CUTIE PIE BOSSY-BOOTS 😀

(Alas, Gimizh has a hefty dose of Nori as well as Bofur, Gimris and Gimli in his character… which is probably makes Dori both sad and fond simultaneously.)

When I wrote that line about ‘Dori mothers the whole mountain in the absence of his brothers’, I totally, TOTALLY meant it with bells on and a cherry on top… also hello once more, my love of extreme character detail, there you are again
