Hi! So I know that in your stories the Dwarves are marvellously accepting of differences in gender/sexuality but what about the elves? I know Mellrin (?) is trans and Legolas treats her just the same, but is this a universal elven concept? <3

Yes, but for different reasons… I reasoned it out this way: Dwarves believe that you are first and foremost a Dwarf, and the differences in sexuality or gender simply do not affect their perceptions of each other – because Dwarves of ALL genders and sexualities are strong, clever, broad and stocky, created by and beloved of Mahal.

When it comes to Elves, particularly Elves of the Third Age (as opposed to the hotheads of the Age of Trees/First Age etc), I had these ideas, idk if they’re well put-together, but here we go!

Elves are, as a race, old. They will live forever. FOREVER, barring accidents or war. The greatest natural threat to their life is from growing so old that they literally fade from existence.

so, if you’re going to live forever, what the hell use is it to deny who you are and whom you love? And if that person there is ALSO going to live forever, then what the heck is the point of imposing your beliefs upon their love and life? Elves have seen wars before – HAVE THEY EVER – and they’ve seen inter-Elf violence and civil war, they’ve got very, very, VERY LONG MEMORIES. They’re a dwindling people, too. And Big Stuff is coming, and they know the signs. They’ve seen them before. They have learned.

So, let’s say you are a different gender to the one everybody initially thought you were? Congratulations, we shall have a marvellous garden party, I’ll bring the Dorwinion, you bring the lembas. And nobody will fight, and everyone will be pleased. We’ve got to stick out the next eight millennia together: I’m with you all the way.

Do you have any thoughts/headcanons about dwarf kids/teens exploring their gender and sexuality options? Because one of the things I love the most about Sansukh is the absolute diversity of sex and gender issues!

Ooooh, Nonnie, I headcanon that the Dwarf culture is more accepting of experimentation and exploration, certainly. I think they do not have gendered occupations, roles or appearances, and so many of the obstacles facing us in our world do not really apply.

This is pretty idealised, I know! In contrast, I’ve headcanonned that Hobbit society, with all its properness and respectability and insularity and gossip, is much more strictured and repressive.

So within these headcanons, I think it’s very normal for Dwarf children and teens to explore who they are! Like people here, some might be totally certain at a very young age. Some might need a bit of time and a bit of trying-it-out-for-size before they find the right fit. Either way, it’d be totally accepted by the society as a whole. Because hey, they’re all Dwarves.

(I’m glad you like it, Nonnie! Thank you so so much!!)

I’m really curious – how old *is* Legolas, exactly? (at least, how old did you “make” him in your fic, I know there isn’t really much to go on canon-wise.) I always have it in my head that he’s around 2000 years old, but I can’t really remember where I got that from — was it your headcanon? Did someone else estimate that?

I’ve seen 2000 years before somewhere as well! I think that came from the LOTR movies, actually, though I’d have to look it up to be certain.

I’ve got him a little older than that, actually – closer to 2.8K. I’m deliberately vague about it, though, because I dislike nailing down that figure: I like the mystery!

Also Gimli joking about how impossibly ancient Legolas is tickles my funny bone. “One million, wasn’t it laddie?” “STOP.”

Gimizh-art on the walls of Gloin and Mizim’s house! Also probably on the walls at his parents’ house and at Gimli’s (does Gimli still live at home?). There is a clear progression in the quality of the pictures – some are toddler scribbles, and the later ones show increased fine motor skills, imagination, etc. His color schemes and choice of subjects is still … questionable sometimes. Though Gimli features in a lot of the art.

Gimli does indeed live at home. He’s got a couple of rooms to himself, but they are within the family apartments. I feel that in a society where you have to carve rooms out of a mountain, it would make more sense for families to stick together a lot! Gimris and Bofur have their own rooms, though.

Moving out at adulthood is a pretty recent Western conceit, and I like to think that Dwarves like to stick close to family. 😀

Gimizh’s pictures are pretty indecipherable at times! His imagination goes at the kind of throttle that his hand can’t quite match!

Thank you for answering my question! And yeah, that idea had actually been rattling around in my head since I first read Sansukh. Gimli hears them all now, thanks to Galadriel, practice, and the Paths of the Dead, but what about dwarves who are getting very old, and very close to their time. Not dead, but like one foot in the grave? So, would those dwarves, closer to the veil because they’re going to be passing through soon, be able to hear their dead loved ones? Dis’ scene is perfect though!

It’s a great idea! And you could totally headcanon the scene that way, I think!! I haven’t laid any groundwork for it, darnit, so I don’t think it will make an appearance in the fic. BUT DON’T EVER LET THAT STOP YOU! 🙂

hi, there, Dets, queen of the hobbit/lotr fandom! I know that your main ship is Gigolas, and I love it, too, but I was wondering how you felt about the pairing Sam/Frodo, just you personally? I myself am sort of up in the air about it, and I just wanted to know your opinion. No need to answer if you don’t feel comfortable, however! I hope you have a great day/evening, and thanks for all your hard work!

hoo boy, I ain’t a queen, I am some sort of permanently bemused court musician 🙂

Awww, I do enjoy Sam/Frodo, yes indeed I do! I think that the love they have for each other is as obvious as the noses on their faces, frankly. I don’t go out of my way to read it, but I like it when I come across it!

Though, going a bit deeper – I prefer the Sam/Frodo/Rosie OT3. That’s because I really enjoy it when Rosie is given more character time. I often see her shunted to one side, ignored or fridged, or turned into a nagging baby-machine, which is not so fun to read. I like her being a part of it, as on-board and as involved as the other two.

I also kindasorta hc Frodo as Ace. The way I feel about it is: Frodo and Sam are homoromantic af together, Rosie and Frodo are QP cuties, and Sam and Rosie are physical lovers.

That’s only my flight-of-fancy, though! Any interpretation of Sam/Frodo is generally lovely and soft and sweet.

Hi @determamfidd, i just sent you an ask personally but just to reiterate, I am NOT at all mad or upset, I do not feel attacked by you in anyway. I’m just very impressed. You did a great job capturing awful people like Inorna can truly be. I suppose i’m very protective of people who reflect my own struggle.

I don’t feel like any wounds were opened, actually i felt very happy that someone as horrible as the people that i have dealt with IRL died the way they did, anticlimactic, nothing grand, it felt fitting. I love your writing and would love to share some of my personal head canons

I am SO grateful – and thank you again for your message!! I am very honoured that you feel I have portrayed the anti-semitism your people face with accuracy. And I’m DOUBLY glad I chose to end it in such a way – an ignoble, mean, pathetic and petty end for an ignoble, mean, pathetic and petty view. Squashed like the bug it is. I’m glad it helped – really really glad. *hugs*

Your personal headcanons sound amazing. AMAZING. I would be utterly thrilled to hear more, particularly about your ideas for the Southern Dwarves and the cultural divide there! Seriously and honestly, reading your insights and your concepts made me gasp and reach for my notebook!!

I have a few questions about aelir(?) if that’s ok? In another ask i think u said smthg about a courting gift? was that the white gems of las galen? What was her courting thranduil like?? What does her crown look like?? + how does she feel about thranduils elk? Lol Does she have an elk too? Srry there’s a lot. ur a great writer <3 thx xx

hey Nonnie! lmao whoa – sure thing!

Yup, Aelir, that’s right! And yes – I have the white gems as a courting gift, from Thranduil. The only jewellery she wore.

Heh, she was the one to pursue him. She decided to climb that tall, stiff, proud dude with the pretty hair – wait for it – yes, like a tree. :))))

Aelir was the one who began the crowns woven from the olvar: she wasn’t much into heavy golden things, and bleh to those flimsy little circlets that the rest of the Elves wear, frankly. So she was out in her woods one day and had an odd thought, and immediately put it into practice. She took some branches and wove her own, decorating it with the summer fruits and flowers. It was so beautiful that Thranduil went ‘RIGHT YES PERFECT’ and wore one for every season since.

He makes his own these days.

LMAO, she’s cool with the Elk (though it has been a succession of elks, really)! Doesn’t have her own: she likes to glide and race through the forests on her own, clinging to branches with her hands, touching the leaf-litter with her bare feet.

Thranduil suspected that the elk(s) and Aelir gossiped about him, but could never prove it.

(AHHH THANK YOU!!)
