3: First book that had a major influence on you: – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I’d read PS and CoS and liked them well enough but PoA was… wow. I was like eight or nine and I read it in two days, which was my record at the time, something about it just got me so hooked, and after I’d finished I went to Mum and asked her to get me more Harry Potter. I’d loved reading and books before PoA but PoA made me a book lover. And it remains my favourite book of all time^^

30: One book everyone should read: – I know this is a fic, but I still think everyone should read it because it’s so good:

Sansûkh by determamfidd. It’s an amazing fic, it’s so well-written, and dets is one of the sweetest people in the world ❤

Second day of Fic Rec Days!

I mostly only read Kiliel fics, but exceptions had to be made for these Hobbit fics:

Sansukh by @determamfidd. This is the mothership of all Hobbit and LoTR fics! Unless you’re new to the fandom or have been living without internet or not into fanfics, there’s no excuse for you not to be reading this. I’m not a Bagginshield or Gigolas shipper, but this one made me one, at least for this story. There’s also an appendices of side stories that are excellent and there’s some incredible fanart and music, too.

Rites of Passage by @eldritchmage. Fili & Kili fic. This one is set when they’re in their mid to late teens. There were some bits in the beginning that were very upsetting, but the adventure they’re on is a great ride. This fic is part of the Kili and Tauriel series, so take a look.

Under new management by frostyjack. Fili & Kili fic. Rites of Passage inspired me to find other Fili & Kili fics, so I did a quick search and found this. The writing is excellent and the characters are utterly engaging. This made me teary in several places. Fili and Kili aren’t brothers, and there’s a lot of hurt!Kili. It’s set in modern day Cambridge, Fili is at university, and Kili has been taken in as a foster child. Some parts are very upsetting (there’s sexual and physical abuse, PTSD, panic attacks) so it may not be for you.

Peredhil by @magnoliamagic (maggiemaye). This one is more about Kili and Tauriel’s children, although there’s quite a bit of Kiliel in it. This fic is part of a series called Under the Mountain where Kili and Tauriel and their children are the main characters. You should read all of the fics in the series!

Dare You To Move by @montgirloflumatere (Mont_Girl_Of_Lumatere). Fili/Sigrid fic. I’m not a huge fan of Fili and Sigrid, but this one is really well done. I love the portrayal of Sigrid in this one.

Surviving by @purajobot935. Fili & Tauriel fic. Kili is dead, but he’s still an important presence in this story. Fili is king and invites Tauriel to live at Erebor. I’m reading it for the Fili & Tauriel relationship. There aren’t too many fics with the pair of them and this one is a pleasure to read.

It’s Fic Rec week(end)! Some more fics that I have loved and (mostly) not recced before! (I’m sorry to say that there are no new fandoms/fics on here, because I tend to rec new stuff as I read it)

Through The Glass || Avengers, pre Clint/Coulson
An utterly amazing fic wherein Clint was deeply reluctant to join SHIELD and his recruitment was only eventually achieved by an agent capturing and secretly brainwashing him, and forbidding him to ever mention it or to disobey a direct order from a superior. Then the agent dies, and everything goes about as well as you’d expect. Full of Clint’s gradual developing warmth towards SHIELD/Coulson/Natasha and coping strategies and team bonding and genuine tension leading up to the eventual reveal (via Loki, who is deeply amused to find that someone else has already been messing with Clint’s head but no one has noticed).

As Sharp As Any Thorn || Avengers, Steve/Tony
A brutal but not grimdark fic about Tony’s armour getting hacked mid-battle and turning its impressive offensive capabilities on his team, with only comms contact left for Tony to warn them with. Obviously not a fluffy fic, but not a horrific darkfic either, though some visuals will probably stay with you for a while.

Exclusive || Avengers, gen
One of my favourite genres of fic, an extensive fake magazine piece about the Avengers at home; how they train, how they interact, and how they want the press to understand them. Also, the ending is delightful.

They Know || Avengers, GSF/OT6/group sex/whatever you want to call it
@determamfidd is probably best known for her epic Hobbit/LOTR fic

, (which I have recc’d at least once before and which I fully intent to print and bind and put on my bookshelf once it’s done because it deserves to be canon), but I also reallyreally love this piece about the team comforting each other in the aftermath of an AoU-style mindfuck of a mission that has slightly broken them all. It’s essentially porn, but

in the best traditions of team-as-family fic it’s so full of warmth and fondness and gentleness and care as well.

The Lotus Eaters || Star Trek, Kirk/Spock
It’s been a while since I read this (and now that I’ve recc’d it I’m going to read it again), but I know that it’s a fic where the characters get stuck on a planet and have to learn to survive on their own for a while, and it’s chock-full of worldbuilding and slowburn relationship-building and murderous giant insects and a huge sentient lizard who adopts them because they are clearly not capable of surviving on their own.

The Road Delivered Us Home || The Hobbit, Bilbo/Thorin
I find that Hobbit fic is best when the author hits a certain kind of Tolkien-ish narrative voice, and this has it in spades, as well as tiny!Frodo and Bilbo’s crotchety old tailor and dirty dwarven drinking songs and the elder Gamgees being all-round delightful. The usual AU where none of the dwarves died in the battle, but Bilbo still left and still adopted Frodo and was doing quite nicely until he was once again disturbed at supper by a knock at the door. Also featuring probably one of my favourite variations on the Shirefolk-don’t-GAF-about-who-you-sleep-with trope.

Dragonchoice (illustrated website version) || also on AO3
Nope, still not shutting up about it, sorry not sorry. Soul-bonded dragons! Queer characters whose storylines are literally never about Being Queer! Powerful women, both innately and gradually learning to come into their own! Murder mysteries! Dragons-as-emergency-services! And now a deeply convoluted and engaging story about time-travel and politics and grief and loss! If you have heard of Pern, you should be reading this. If you’re a bit skeptical because of the stuff you’ve heard re: tentpegs and non-con mating flights, I can only say that in the best traditions of fandom this trilogy expands upon canon and smooths out every failing (with the exception of the mating flights, which are an in-built part of the Pern universe, sorry. If you want more details/content warnings, seriously, hit me up and I’ll let you know.)

This question was surprisingly difficult, because I think a
lot of fics have so many funny elements? Especially bagginshield where Bilbo is
super snarky and Thorin is just a major dork!

32. do you leave reviews after reading fics? if so, what do they sound like? OMG yes i do, most of the time, and i flip flop between sounding like this: “LSKJLKSJDLDFJLKDF OMG I’M SCREMAING WTF HOW COULD YOU”, and this: “Wow, this was incredible and amazing and I loved everything about it. Your use of literary device and also this other smart thing you did really made this fic, blah, blablahblah”
as a fic writer i appreciate both types of comments, so i hope other authors do too lol

47. if you had to introduce someone to fan fiction with a couple fics, which would you suggest? it is insanely hard to choose. i would send them to my bookmarks. if forced i would say Clarity of Vision by mithen,

4. Oh, Son of A— by Striving_Artist (this one gets super cracky and it made me laugh the most I have all year)

5. Nothing Gold Can Stay by perkynurples (I feel sort of bad because I still haven’t finished it even though I’ve tried twice because I keep angsting out at a certain spot, but Good Omens was my fave book before I finished it, too, so it’s like a tradition at this point)

also I realized, all of these are ships I didn’t really have much interest in reading before this year??? so hella. good new stuff in my life.
