Ahhh Rippy! *hugs and hugs* so lovely to hear from you again!
BADASS HOBBITS. I have always, always loved the Scouring of the Shire, it’s always been a source of mild disappointment to me that we don’t see it in the films, because thematically it is just SO important. So glad you liked it! Ahh thank you, friend :)))
Yes, it was! You’ll notice that over the past three-four chapters, Thorin and Bilbo have been having little conversations that deepen their connection and emotional intimacy – esp. in #46, with the ‘forever isn’t long enough to show you all the ways in which i love you’ exchange.
Thorin has supported Bilbo through his own rather painful growth (his anger, secrecy, suspicion and lies-to-himself, etc) and hasn’t pushed him to forgive, or forget, or anything – he’s just been there. Bilbo has in return, come back to Thorin over and over and over again, and learned why Thorin has been through his long journey. They’re not separate and conflicting entities that keep confusingly bumping into each other for no reason now, they’re very much a unitied team. They’re both pretty cognizant of the triggers and issues of the other, and make concerted efforts to support each other through difficult moments.
They’ve also moved past the ‘newness’ of the relationship quite quickly… well, it wasn’t exactly new, after all, just sort of ‘arrested in its tracks’! They’re not dealing with endless longing and bitterness and repression and regrets and what-ifs anymore. Each one knows and is totally secure in the love of the other.
So yeah, they’ve moved to the ‘Old Marrieds’ pretty naturally!
