lotr meme: seven relationships [3/7] → The Three Hunters

“With hope or without hope we will follow the trail of our enemies. And woe to them, if we prove the swifter! We will make such a chase as shall be accounted a marvel among the Three Kindreds: Elves, Dwarves, and Men. Forth the Three Hunters!”

I know this is a small thing but I just want to say I love the amount of detail you put into the different fighting styles. Not just of each race by also individuals. I remember one scene where Thorin is watching the Fellowship in battle and comparing Gimli’s solidness to Legolas’ unearthly quickness, and even Boromir’s practiced forms to Aragorn’s blended style and my little nerd heart cried with joy. (The part where he judged Aragorn as the best swordsman he’d ever seen didn’t hurt either.)

*blushes* AHHH thank you so much, Nonnie. You are very kind!

I like the contrast of their fighting styles, so adapted to their lives and physicalities and, yeah! I don’t know a damned thing about actual expert-level sword or axe fighting, but gosh I like to watch it.

Hi Dets! I’ve been re-reading Sansukh and going through your posts on Legolas’ brothers, and I’ve come to the conclusion that none of Thranduil’s sons were married before the War of the Ring; is this correct? If so, what — if any — impact would this have on Thranduil when Legolas makes his relationship with Gimli known? (does Thranduil even want his sons to get married in the first place?)

Hmm. No, none of them are married, you’re right.

So, I am writing Elves as a slightly different kettle of fish to Dwarves. From Tolkien’s writings, it appears that Elves can all be considered demisexual to varying degrees. Sex can ONLY occur when love is present, and sex itself is the act of marriage.

Laindawar is very, VERY introverted. He has only really ever been close to one person: his brother Laerophen, to be frank. He likes his solitude. He is often mistaken for aloof, because he simply prefers his own company. He has never fallen in love, and doesn’t want or expect to.

Laerophen wouldn’t be averse to falling in love one day, but he is far beyond the age when an Elf customarily finds their love. It’s not unheard of for an older Elf to find love, but Laerophen doesn’t think it likely.

Legolas is also beyond the age when Elves are most likely to settle down. He was quite resigned to it, and was ready to be the Prince his father expected him to be.

WHOOPS 😉

Thranduil would have terribly mixed feelings over his sons’ finding a partner. His own experience has been one of great joy followed by terrible loss, and he would NEVER want that for his sons. In the films he warns Tauriel away from Legolas out of a sense of protectiveness rather than classism against ‘lowly Silvan Elves’, to my mind (though of course the classism is a lovely excuse to use – Thranduil doesn’t easily reveal his true feelings without a LOT of prompting or provocation).

So, a bit rambly, but there’s some of my thoughts, Nonnie!

val-kiri:

Legolas being a pretty-boy showoff

Det’s 36th chapter’s sneak peak persuaded me to dust off my colored pencils.

ohhhhhhhhhhhh *heart eyes*

asldjgfasjdgfaljh he is SO PRETTYYYYYYYYYY good goddamn no wonder Gimli can’t keep his eyes off him! I LOVE IT AHH THANK YOU THANK YOU LOOKIT THOSE PRETTY FEET AND THE KNIVES AND HIS HAAAIR

Thank you for answering so diligently and patiently our shenanigans <3 You're truly praiseworthy and I'm so glad I found this piece of art you're creating. Today I discovered elven naming customs and I found out they have a "mother-name" (Amilessë), some kind of private name. I wonder if Legolas still remembers his? Do you plan on doing something with it? The system doesn't seem as strict as the dwarven one though. Thaank you! *leaves throwing petals on the ground you walk*

No worries, Nonnie! My pleasure. I try to answer as many as I can, and I always feel a bit guilty when I can’t really give an answer. And sometimes an ask just sits in my inbox for so long that I am embarrassed about answering it after all that time, lol

Oh gosh, yes! The mother-names! God, Valinorean naming conventions, PHEW. So complicated.

Aaaaaaand I totally forgot about them, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE REMINDER! (I found a pretty good breakdown on Legolas’ name here, actually! and it looks as though I have free reign to pick something bwaaahahahaha)

Okay, for those who can’t click the link bc they’re on their phone or whatevs, the mother-name (Amilessë) seems to be a prophetic Quenya name, given to a Valinorean Elf by their mum (i.e. Maitimo = Maedhros; Fëanáro = Fëanor). It’s usually used amongst family and close friends. There are four different names for a High Elf! The mother-name (Amilessë), the father-name (essi/Ataressë), the chosen name (Cilmessë) which the Elf picks for themselves, and the after-name (Epessë) – such as Elrond’s ‘Half-Elven’ (Elrond Peredhil).

I think? I could be barking up the wrong mallorn here. Any lore-masters out there want to give us their insight?
