Hi there @callalillyg! I would LOVE to chat further on this, absolutely! Under the cut:

I absolutely ABSOLUTE agree with the Dwarves=Jews angle – if indeed it can even be called an angle, as Tolkien himself said that they were based upon the Jewish people. I’ve explored this in some further detail (with the help of some Jewish friends, as I am a Gentile) in ‘Midwinter’, one of the Sansukh Appendices.

Inorna (and Krummett) serve several purposes in the narrative – but the greatest purpose they serve is in their defeat. She was initially influenced by someone I knew in my teen years: an absolute vile bigot, a bully, a blatant twister of the truth who played victimisation games, and a contemptible manipulator of people’s sympathies. (I still have violent reactions against this sort of behaviour, even today).

When I first developed her character, aaaaaaaaaaaaall the way back in the Bofur-at-Dale scene (written more than two years ago, now), I was worried and angry at the escalating prejudice I could see in the world. There were attacks against Jewish-owned businesses in Europe at the time, for example. A lot of ‘oh well, shame – but what about US’ from many other peoples.

So, Inorna came about, both a character and a symbol. Krummett is that yes-man, the follower: he is emboldened by her outspokenness to air his own nasty attitudes.

I wanted a character to embody that sort of irrational, horrible prejudice, and I wanted the Men of Dale (through Bard and Selga) to utterly refute its place amongst them. Then I wanted the Dwarves and Elves together to both expose and DEFEAT it. With this attitude expunged, the narrative is now open to a new age of acceptance, respect and love for the Dwarves.

I didn’t predict the real-life events of the past few weeks, not at all – I can most certainly see how her vitriol feels more personal to you now, and damn, I am so sorry. I truly did not wish to poke at open wounds, and I am so, so sorry.

I’ve been having a difficult few days, I’ve been having some family problems and just generally feeling lousy, but I wanted to thank you for Sansukh, Politically Sensitive, Midwinter, Small Ones…just a lot of your fics, really. They’re so well written and just…happy (despite the angst-ridden bits of Sansuk) that it’s helping the time pass a little quicker and helping me keep from dwelling.

I am so so sorry to hear that things have been so tough for you, Nonnie. I’m stunned and so grateful that my blatherings have helped (omg!! SMALL ONES ahhh my goodness…!). I want you to know that if you need an escape or someone to talk to, you are welcome to come off anon and chat to me. No pressure or expectation though. Just know that I’m thinking of you. *hugs and hugs*

It’s fine! I can’t remember word for word what I said (which is a bit sad, because I phrased it better), but I wondered if the elves’ dancing in Midwinter would be considered interpretive dance, like Isadora Duncan performed? And I also was curious why, if Thranduil trained Laerophen and Laindawar, did Laerophen end up being the one to teach Legolas? Was it just coincidence, or is there a more angsty reason? Sorry, it sounded a lot better the first time :( But I’m always up for dancing convos :)

Hey Nonnie – sorry I took so long to get to this. Been taking a little break.

Yes, interpretive dance! Isadora Duncan was part of the inspiration behind the idea – in particular, her Water Study. It feels amazingly Elvish, to me.

Thranduil will train Legolas to dance the seasons, most certainly… but our green leaf is just a tiny tiny wee Elfling at the time of ‘Midwinter’, and so Thranduil hasn’t gotten around to it yet! Legolas is impatient and doesn’t feel like waiting until he is ‘ready’, and is bothering his big brother about it, basically.

*hugs*

Hi! Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I sent an ask about Midwinter a week or two ago, and I wanted to know if you got it? My internet it really iffy sometimes, I’ve had to resend asks to other people before because of it, so I wanted to know if it was because of my internet or if you were just really busy and hadn’t gotten to it (which is fine!). Sorry, I just wasn’t sure and thought it was best to ask. It was about Thranduil, his sons, and dancing, if that helps?

Hey Nonnie!

I just checked through everything from the past couple of weeks, and I can’t find your ask! I searched my emails as well, and it hasn’t arrived there either. I would love to chat about the dancing ideas, if you’re interested 🙂

Sansukh is one of my go-to comfort fics whenever I have a bad day. I’ve thought about commenting on each chapter during one of the times when I’m re-reading it, but thought that might be weird so I’ve never done it. Rambling, sorry, but I just wanted to say that I really like Sansukh, and the little side fics, especially the one with bby Legolas and his awkward big bro interacting.

You’re a star and a gem. Thank you so so much! DON’T BE SORRY, this was absolutely lovely to receive!

I wish you all the good days, Nonnie. *hugs and hugs and hugs* Again, thank you so much!

I am clearly too Australian for your midwinter fic, because the thought “why are they celebrating New Years in July?” actually flittered through my head. My inability to comprehend foreign calendars aside, it was very cute and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

lmao, yeah – as an Aussie myself, I found it a little weird to be writing about chilly winds and snow and ice when here it is bushfire season, I am sunburned from camping, and the air is set to ‘stifling humidity’. 😀 But I’m so happy you liked it, Nonnie! Thank you so so much!
