determamfidd:

In Western Lands (Sam’s Song).

This is the final
song planned for Sansûkh, composed and performed by me for SSAA choir.

It will be linked
in the fic on AO3 RIGHT after I write the words, ‘The End’ in Chapter 50.

The poem is from Return
of the King,
and is sung by Sam Gamgee. It
has been suggested
that it was originally penned by a certain Mr. Bilbo Baggins.

This composition is
lovingly dedicated to my dear friend, @poplitealqueen. Love ya, mate.

Sheet music for download is here. Lyrics reproduced
under the cut.

Do you have any songs that really remind you of Sansukh and Lotr in general? Bands in particular that give you a vibe for the dwarves, that kind of thing?

Not really songs, or bands, per se. I tend to write the music I want to hear for the Dwarves and for Sansukh myself, lmao. This could be bc I am a giant glutton for punishment

out of the stuff I have written, the most ‘Sansukh-ish’ ones are Light on the Horizon, and In Western Lands (Sam’s Song)

The most especially Dwarvish one is ‘The Iron Hills For Me’ – which surprises absolutely nobody, I am sure :)… but also the Broadbeam Cradle-Song, and Gimli’s Jig

I have had headcanony thoughts about Dwarven music before, though! Here is a big ole post about it.

Do you ever listen to music when you write? If so what kind? What’s your favorite? I think that sometimes what you’re listening to affects the writing, at least it does for me when I write.

Not really – I’m a muso, and I’ve been trained since a very young age to give music my full attention. It can be annoying, actually, particularly when you’re watching a film and you miss the dialogue bc you’re listening to the film score, ugh

So, I tend to listen to ambient soundscapes when I write, if I listen to anything at all. Mostly not, tbh.

This is one that I used a bit when writing the Paths of the Dead, for instance.

And The Guild of Ambience are awesome. Seriously awesome.

Or, I sometimes listen to a piece of music and then write, while the emotions & thoughts the music brought up in me are still strong and fresh. Sometimes I will hear a piece of music and it will instil the urge to write in me, without my direction or intention lmao.

I’m so excited-we had our choir awards banquet on Friday and I got a letter! I can get a letterman’s jacket for choir (I didn’t even know that was possible)! I’m so happy *squee* I’ve really struggled with mental illness and it’s so rewarding. My parents are buying the jacket for me (holy shit it’s so expensive). But I’m also feeling like it’s not valid? idk, I’ve always felt that letterman’s jackets were for sports, i guess. (ps you’ve helped out immensely, esp the lullaby after my nightmares)

I had to look up what a letterman’s jacket was! Congratulations, Nonnie, that is SO wonderful, I am so proud for you!

Hell, singing is a sport. We use our bodies as instruments, our WHOLE bodies. Often in ways that require minute and intense adjustment… and then we have to MAINTAIN that over rehearsals and lessons and concerts. Like… The development of your low abdominal breathing (SPLAT!), the carriage of ribcage and the intercostal muscles, dropping the pelvic floor, sustaining tone over the phrase, forward posture on the balls of the feet – which must of course be maintained for long periods, tilt for cripes’ sake, lifting the soft palate, using a consistent head tone, spin and twang, eradicating tongue and jaw tension, maintaining healthy production away from the throat in both pianissimo and fortissimo sections – I can go on and on – the sheer physical effort that goes into singing makes it a very sportlike endeavour.

Worth mentioning too is that aspect of many societies that devalues the Arts and upholds Sports. My own country – Australia – does the same (holy shit does it ever, it is infuriating). You are as worthy of that jacket as anyone sporty. Your efforts may be in a different field (pun intended) but they are just as impactful and important.

You deserve that jacket, friend. You’ve worked damn hard.

(I am so glad to hear that the lullaby has helped you. I hope you have beautiful sweet dreams, Nonnie.)

Does Light on the Horizon have ukulele chords?? Because I really want to play it for a girl I have a crush on, but I can only play ukulele. Also, Sansukh is OMG AMAZING! I have read a chapter each night (sometimes even two, I know I’m such a rebel) for the past four weeks and it’s the best fanfic I have ever read, bar none.

OOOH welp, it does now! I just sat down and scribbled them out for you, Nonnie. Playing uke for a pretty girl is 110% the best reason ever to write out chords 🙂 Best of luck with it, and THANK YOU!
