General things I’ve gathered from the seven-ish years I’ve been in choir

gon-and-killuas-mother:

1. Nobody likes the sopranos

2. The sopranos don’t even like the sopranos

3. The only people that like sopranos are the ones that write the music and that one soprano that dominates the rest

4. The altos are never loud enough

5. But when they are, they’re the most beautiful sounding creatures and make the sopranos jealous of their rich tones

6. Basses hardly get the attention they deserve because their parts are so. dull. And yet they have the most work to do because singers barely know how to sight read and these basses have to read the goddamn bass cleft does anyone even understand that shit???

7. But you better believe everyone is going to pay attention when it’s just the basses practicing because holy shit have you heard a bass sing

8. No one knows how to sight read. Literally everyone is doing it by ear. And half the time, the sopranos don’t even have to sight read because they have the melody. Again.

9. The tenors have the entire music industry catered to them, and yet they will always be secretly jealous of the basses

10. A first soprano will be offended if you demote her to second soprano for even one song. No one knows why.

11. The choir director is always tired. And angry. And passive aggressive. Do not chew gum in front of them unless you want to be chewed on yourself.

12. If you think having Christmas decorations being sold in November is ridiculous, don’t speak to someone in the choir. They have been practicing every Christmas carol since the first week of September. The Christmas Spirit does not exist for a choir soul. They are numb to it.

13. Do not make the choir sing anything by Handel. That is a form of Torture. Please be kind to the choir. They’ve been through enough already.

14. Stay away from the piano. Especially if it’s a Steinway. Firstly, no one likes that one douchebag that plays Heart and Soul every goddamn time they touch the keys. Secondly, that’s a Steinway and the choir director will have a heart attack if it’s even slightly damaged.

15. The most common phrase heard in choir is “SOPRANOS, NOT SO LOUD”

@ravenclawnerd?

Actual quotes from my university choir director:

“Tenors, pinch a dime between your asscheeks!”

“Dear Opal: it’s this note.  Love, Opal.”

“Altos, what the shit?”

“Life is not adagio!!”

“I swear it takes an act of God and congress…”

And then one from a different choir director, just as beloved, and just as unhinged:

*WORDLESS ROARING WHILE CONDUCTING A 3 IN ONE LARGE ARM-SWING FIST-PUMP CIRCLE*

I’m not even a vocalist but as a music major I still have to study SATB vocal pieces and God damn it the bass parts are bullshit. We’re always taught to move up or down by step when writing a piece, then you have the basses that have to jump like fourths and fifths on every Goddamn note. Basses get absolutely no love, instrumentalists and vocalists alike.

New song! This is the song that Legolas sings at the end of The Return of the King when he first starts to long for the sea. Thank you to anyone who listens! 🙂 Also, I tag all my music with ‘songs from the lord of the rings’ if anyone is interested.

Music is mine, the text is from The Return of the King by J. R. R. Tolkien

To the Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying,
The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying.
West, west away, the round sun is falling.
Grey ship, grey ship, do you hear them calling,
The voices of my people that have gone before me?
I will leave, I will leave the woods that bore me;
For our days are ending and our years failing.
I will pass the wide waters lonely sailing.
Long are the waves on the Last Shore falling,
Sweet are the voices in the Lost Isle calling,
In Eressëa, in Elvenhome that no man can discover,
Where the leaves fall not: land of my people for ever!

Well, that took me about half a second to reblog, haha. Seriously, though, if you guys haven’t heard this girl sing – check out her blog, listen to all of her music! So beautiful! Almost always her compositions and her voice make me tear up…

Do I really need to add anything to this post? Perfect, as always! Keep up the awesome work!

HEY @determamfidd YOU SHOULD REALLY CHECK THIS OUT

AHH THANK YOU IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL

The Evil Overlord’s Classical Mixtape

bc sometimes you just want a little mood music for re-reading the handbook and plotting galactic domination (or for writing a darkfic or battle-scene).

I have also made a Youtube playlist of all these pieces! Please enjoy as you work on your villainous laugh 🙂

Great list. Just can’t figure out what Spring is doing in there…

Rite of Spring is alternatively creepy, atmospheric and aaaaaangry. It famously caused a near-riot at its premiere. (I mean, Disney made it the soundtrack for a DINOSAUR BATTLE in FantasiaTry it from this point! The whole ballet is EPIC… I compromised by only putting the first Act in 🙂

i’ve been listening to heaps of bombastic classical music lately, and half of them make me go ‘JOHN WILLIAMS DEF MINED THIS FOR STAR WARS MATERIAL’ (christ, just LISTEN to the Dvorak 9, 4th Movement…)

Thinking of making a Dark Overlord’s Mix/Playlist of classical music…  would anyone be interested in something like this? Something to listen to whilst planning the hero’s demise from your Evil Lair– or just writing a darkfic?

Does anyone know what this instrument is called? Its like a Marimba but it is very large and made out of huge stones. Listen to that tone! haha Love it!

It’s a type of Vietnamese lithophone (literally rock sound instrument) called a đàn đá. Some ethnomusicologists think that these are likely the oldest type of man made instrument.

this is some good rock music right here.

@determamfidd, Dwarves would definitely have some version of a massive lithophone, y/y?

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

So I’m a junior in high school & people are making a lot of noise @ me about college apps and i’m scared. I’ve played the cello for eight years&for a while I thought I wanted to go into music ed because I like teaching & music. Trouble is, i’m a) not sure if I care enough about music to, & b) I was hoping to double major, which I’m worried is a symptom of a. Did you go to a specific music education program, or did you major in music & get ed credentials later? Which do you think is best?

Hey there, Nonnie.

First of all, you know yourself and your situation better than I can ever do. So please take any advice with a pinch of salt, okay? Because this is your life, not mine.

Secondly, you have so. much. time. You’re so young. It’s fine to have confused ambitions, many ambitions, or even conflicting ones. No decision is a life sentence. We live in a world in which people re-train and begin new careers all the time. The days in which you chose your field and were stuck in it your whole life long are loooong gone. For example, my own mother-in-law was a psychologist who re-studied to become a lawyer, and ended up a professor.

My own situation was this: I finished school very young (17). I had the marks to go into law, medicine, etc, etc, and I felt pressured to do so. So I moved away from home and began a law degree that I eventually dropped due to a number of factors, lack of motivation among them. Looking back, I should have taken a few years between the end of high school and university, to learn more about the world and gain some social experience. I was taken advantage of by some very unscrupulous people (I won’t call them ‘friends’), who preyed upon my sympathy, my naivety and good intentions. I lost a LOT of money and sleep. Ah well!!!!

When I was twenty, I decided to give higher education another shot (I was understandably a bit gun-shy). I finally picked the thing I love, and began a Bachelor’s degree in Music. Upon completing it, I found that I probably should have done a combined B.Mus.Ed, rather than just the B.Mus. It’s unfortunate but true that it is incredibly difficult to support yourself as a musician in Australia. I fell into a succession of very eclectic, very soul-destroying day jobs in secretarial fields, bookkeeping and hospitality, padded out occasionally with the odd musical or production role. I found that I am not suited to desk-jobs at all. It wasn’t a good time.

I decided to go back to uni only a few years ago, and do my Diploma of Education (Secondary). It was more about me getting out of the endless cycle of shitkicking desk-jobs at the time, but it ended up being a real stroke of luck. Because finally I had found something that suited me right down to the bones. It took over a decade to get there, but I found it at last.

Though, I don’t feel like I WASTED any of my life finding the thing that fits me, either. All those jobs gave me invaluable insights into the way the world works, the way people are, the way I am. I did great things outside the workplace, I had fantastic experiences and met wonderful people. Even though work sucked, it was all still my life, and perhaps it was all needed to build me into the person I am now. I still have skills from those years that I use today, and patience and perseverance and understandings that I would not otherwise have, and that makes me a better teacher.

Also, I probably would never have met Mr Dets if I hadn’t run away from that first degree.

The thing is, too, with any secondary education qualification? You end up teaching in fields that are not your ‘main’ one. I am a music teacher, that’s my subject of most expertise, but I have also taught *deep breath* drama, dance, history, English, PE, Visual Art, chemistry, geography… and the list goes on. One of the musicians who graduated with me in my Dip.Ed now teaches Manual Crafts.

If I have anything relevant to tell you that I learned from all of the above, it is this: don’t let others pressure you into changing your life for them. It’s not theirs, and there’s no ‘should!’ involved. And a double-major at 20 would have saved me nearly an entire decade of misery, white-knuckling it out in jobs that were bad for me. So there’s that, too. Also, sometimes something you’re not all that enthusiastic about turns out to be EXACTLY what was ordered. Life is weird, idk.

*hugs* I hope that my experience helps you in your journey, Nonnie. You’re capable and you know who you are and you know your own strengths and likes and dislikes. Whatever you do, you’ll be great.

*I can write for these fandoms with some confidence: Avengers, LOTR/The Hobbit, HTTYD, Star Wars: TFA, Discworld, Doctor Who… and I can muddle through others with a bit of research! I do have some absolute NOTPs and characterisations I will not write (such as Evil!Dain Ironfoot), but I am open to most pairings otherwise. Also I will not write gore, vore, mpreg, incest or rape/non-con. Other kinks subject to negotiation, though!
