So, I decided to finally try my hand at recording one of the songs from Sansukh. Since The Iron Hills for Me has been stuck in my head for week now, I decided to try transposing and recording it. The lyrics are, of course, by the amazing determamfidd, and the music is written by determamfidd and notanightlight. 

You will note that I transposed this a full third higher than what Dets wrote, because I cannot hit E3 with any kind of consistency, and even F3 can be a bit dodgy at times. So, this isn’t what it will actually sound like when it finally appears in the story. Still, I think it’s pretty in the higher key.

Baris, it is fantastic!!! You have absolutely flawless pitch, and lovely clean warm vibrato, and ngggh I am gonna go hit replay a zillion times over, hope you’re cool with me gushing over you for the next few days 🙂

(The transposition is awesome, and you smoothly sail over the break like it don’t even matter!! hahaha – you will not have missed that I can’t hit E3 consistently either lol – but I reaaaally wanted to belt it! Perhaps one day I will use my range, but it is not this day)

More ALEP singing XD I ended up (drunkenly) singing the setting I’ve been working on of determamfidd‘s Song of Beginnings from Sansukh the first night of the event, and everybody loved it (both the lyrics and the music) and ended up asking me to (drunkenly) sing it again the second night.  By the end, people were joining in with the last line of each verse, it was kind of wonderful. ❤

(I’m actually working on a choral arrangement of this, I was trying to sort of keep it hidden til then, but that preview I put on soundcloud has like a gazillion plays for some reason, so fuck it XD)

(ngl Avi, half of those plays on soundcloud are probably me XD)

Okay – first, your voice. You have such a beautiful, beautiful voice. There is such a gorgeous, pearly, clear tone, and you have amazing control and brightness – it’s right into the mask there, and your vowels and phrasing and pitch and rubato and OHGOD *clutches face* AHHHH it is so BEAUTIFUL. *flails at you very intensely* AVIIIII

SECOND: THE TUNE. OH MY GOOD GRAVY. People are joining in with the refrain, just. GAHHH. It has that solemn sacred feeling, that magical depth and vastness, the simplicity of plainsong, the grandeur of a hymn, the plaintive ache of a song that promises acceptance… one day. The repeated high motif before the refrain makes me tear up each time, I am not kidding.

Yay someone recorded it! xD So at our ALEP events in Kentucky we usually do choir workshops, so even though this was only a little baby gathering I still wanted us to sing something.  Aaand since I’m Sansukh trash (and we’ve done just about every movie song under the sun xD), we ended up getting a little group together to do The Iron Hills for Me. ❤ Learned in about an hour with a smartphone piano app and sheer willpower. xD We had to take the key up for the sake of the poor altos, and I was mildly overheating/trying not to die (I ended up tearing my costume off as soon as this was done XD), but we had fun.  Everybody loved it, and I think we might have converted some new readers ;D

Okay, so in case anyone was wondering whether I can do the Crystaltongue part of the role of Barís (you probably weren’t, but I feel like posting this anyway), here is a recording of the first half of one of my older solos: O Splendidissima Gemma, by Hildegard von Bingen. 

This doesn’t really show off most of my range (I do technically have Barís’s canonical range of F3 to F6), but my microphone has been saturating at anything C6 or higher even on the lowest gain – incidentally, if anyone knows how to fix that, do let me know. And anyway, this solo feels rather appropriate as a sample for a singing dwarrowdam, because the last time I performed it in public was in the caves of Waitomo, when I was living in New Zealand.

Hi! So I was rereading Sansûkh (again) and I just paid a bit of attention to the Iron Hills song. I grew up in Central Australia but I moved a few years ago to a coastal city, and listening to it made me feel homesick in a way that not much else ever has. I just wanted to comment on the brilliance of your storytelling, and oh god the Dáin feelings that I’m having after that.

Ahhhhh, oh my gosh, Nonnie! Thank you, thank you SO much. 

Reading your message made me get very emotional. The coast is such a different world, and yeah – the Iron Hills song holds a lot of my own feelings about the place I grew up (endless red earth and aching blue skies ahoy), and how I miss it. I’m very, very grateful that it touched you so and that all those feelings came through. *hugs you* I hope you carry a bit of that home with you, even if it’s just the memory of that stillness you get out there. There’s nothing quite like it, to me.
