The being a low alt as a woman is a real hassle. Most of the time songs are either too high and when they go low its with men and then it’s too low. Ugh

you’re probs gonna like this piece then! It’s SSAA!

(reason for that is: because I’m recording it all, so I gotta be able to hit it all, lmao – good thing I have a 3 octave range or this’d be even tighter harmony than it is)

So this has TWO alto parts, and one is mid-range, and the other is LOWWWWWW (for me, anyway!). Down to a bottom F#!

modernamelia:

Reblog if u appreciate altos. And I don’t mean “reblog if you recognize that sopranos would sound pitchy if altos weren’t there to sing harmonies.” I mean reblog if you appreciate girls who can get bassy, who can’t play Christine, who constantly have to take it a fifth or an octave lower so as not to damage their vocal chords. Reblog if u would listen to a solo from a girl with a medium voice, who can’t go particularly low but can’t go particularly high, instead rocking those middle ranges. Reblog if you wanna tell all the altos out there who have struggled with confidence bc they just wanna sing higher, just wanna get solos and melodies for once, just wanna be as appreciated as sopranos, that they are beautiful singers with beautiful medium low voices who are beautiful and valid and worthy of attention.

um, i cried during “Light on the Horizon” so um, just thought you should know that’s why I’m sitting here with tears on my keyboard. thanks. (no, seriously, thank you)

AWWWW OMG THANK YOU AHHH THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! (Dets is still a quivering eager wreck when it comes to her music, part the millionth lmao)

ummm i feel that, in the interests of disclosure, I have been listening to a lot of Eric Whitacre lately… and Paul Jarman… and Aaron Copland’s 12 Songs of Emily Dickinson too.

So, the next song in the works is… probablygonnahurtabitalso SORRY SORRY IN ADVANCE SORRY SORRY SORRY

Hrm. Er. A couple of months ago I listened to @determamfidd‘s Iron Hills Soldier’s Song (the music she writes and performs for her Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit series of fic is GLORIOUS and 100% part of my musical Tolkienverse canon) (seriously) loved it to pieces, and wondered how it would sound in a minor key.

So I hummed and sang and recorded an attempt. It’s kinda wobbly because I was kinda terrified, as I usually am when I record my voice

:3 I searched long and hard for at least one second melodic line, but since I’m pretty sure the result was responsible for the non-stop rain we got a while ago, I’m just posting the naked song, as it were.

oh my gosh this is fabulous

*presses play button repeatedly* OH WOW – I love the minor key! It has such a celtic flavour to it now, and that draws out the more melancholy aspects of the lyrics, such as ‘out we trot like cattle’ and ‘we pray that we’ll come home’, it gives it such a beauty and sadness and oh my gosh

AHHH and your voice!! HOW CLEAN ARE YOUR VOWELS, you have gorgeous gorgeous round vowels and clean dipthongs, and a sweet open tone and I LOVE YOUR VOICE OK – NO effort or pushing for the upper belt register, totally soars up there without a pause! (lmao not like dumb soprano me straining to be a belter XD )

(“

honestly I am having a minor (ba-dum-TISH) conniption here, this is completely wonderful and yes yes I want to call this a variant on the song, in-universe

bc if Silent Night can have multiple tunes, so can the Iron Hills dangit

*hugs you tight* THANK YOU, THANK YOU SO SO MUCH

Today we learned that gravity is a fine musician. A team of Japanese filmmakers constructed an incredibly long wooden xylophone along a steady slope in the middle of a beautiful forest in Kyushu in southern Japan. Once the awesome instrument was built and carefully tuned a wooden ball was released at the very top. As the ball rolls down the xylophone it strikes each wooden bar once, producing a single note, performing Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring“ accompanied by the gentle sounds of a peaceful forest:

Click here for an orchestral performance of the same piece.

To learn more about how this clever forest xylophone was made watch this behind-the-scenes video:

Amazing.

*SLAMS FIST ON TABLE* I demand more forest gravity music

@determamfidd

I had already been listening to the instrumental score of Light on the Horizon on loops for a while since you linked to that a while back while it was still a work in progress, but. DETS. THE FINISHED ONE. IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL. I ADORE THIS SONG.

LYRICS

Though my heart may be heavy,
Though I wander afar,
I will come to the morning
Over sea and under star.

Where you go there will I follow,
For you are my guiding star.
I will never fear tomorrow.
There is comfort where you are.

Though the starlight is fading (I am lost in the dark),
Though the night gathers fast (take my hand).
There’s a new world awaiting (with you here by my side)
Lay your burden down at last (at last).

There’s a light on the horizon,
There’s a voice that calls my name,
There’s a place that I belong,
There’s an ever-burning flame.

Far from hope and from home (far from all that I knew),
Full of sorrow and fear (meleth nîn),
You are never alone (ghivashelê I’m near, I am near)
I will always be here (I am here).

Out of dark to the day’s rising,
Death itself will I defy,
For the road goes ever on,
To your arms will I fly.

I was worn, I was weary (annon ûr, nîn angin),
With suspicion and shame (Âzyungel),
Now I stand in the sunlight (now I stand in the light)
And my heart it calls your name (and my heart calls your name).

And the road takes me onward,
Takes me far from my door.
Never now will I falter,
Since you taught me how to soar.

I will wait for you forever,
I will be here when you call,
And if ever you should stumble,
I will catch you if you fall.

There’s a light on the horizon,
There’s a ship upon the sea,
Now the world is so much wider,
For you wander it with me.

And the sun shines out the clearer,
Golden glory in the blue!
There’s a light on the horizon,
And it’s guiding me to you.
