Hi, I was rereading Sansukh in preparation for the next chapter drop, and I got to the chapter where you do a brief recap of Zhori, and I am a massive fan of various textile arts, so I decided to share my dwarwen weaving/loom headcannons with you. Okay, so I think Tolkien was writing about a vaguely 10th to 12th centuryish sort of era in LotR, which means that if middle-earth’s technology develops parallel to ours, that means that people would be developing what we call horizontal looms. (1/?)
(2/?) Horizontal looms basically were a revolution, and they were/are ridiculously hard to make by hand, so, who in Tolkien’s world would be making them first, but the dwarves? And horizontal looms are really good for complicated patterns so, the dwarves would be able to make these gorgeously patterned rugs and tapestries, and clothing could have fantastic patterns directly woven in to them. But only well off weavers could probably afford it. So, I headcannon Zhori had a different type of loom.
(3/?) Zhori probably used a warp weighted loom, which is basically a workhorse loom, because you can do practically anything on it. You can tie the shed in place and make cut pile rugs working from the ground up, you can weave long cloth, you can make fancy tapestry on it if you have the patience to warp it. It can even be broken down somewhat easily if you wanted to move it. Zhori would have loved it because with one loom she could support herself and her children.
(4/5) (these are getting long sorry). Also, warp weighted looms need warp weights, which are either stone or clay doughnuts, that could be intricately patterned. In a slightly sadder headcannon, Dori is only able to keep a few of his mother’s shuttles and her weaving sword, because he has to sell her loom and remaining stock to keep himself and his brothers fed in a bad winter. Dori eventually uses a horizontal loom himself, but he uses Zhori’s shuttles and weaving sword on it. To remember her.
(5/5) Sorry for the inbox flood, I just have many feelings in regards to weaving, and Sansukh, so this was a chance to combine two of my passions. One quick last thing, tablet weaving (basically it’s pieces of cardboard/other similar material used as the heddles where you turn them to open the shed for weaving) is something Zhori taught Dori to do when he was little and she was pregnant with Nori. It’s something small, teaches him the beginnings of weaving, and keeps him out of trouble.
NEVER BE SORRY. EVER. FOR THIS. SHEER. GLORY.
I had to go look all of these things up, you are simply incredible and this sent me down a wonderful winding path to a world I’d never even seen before, oh my GOD
Amazing, the world is amazing, these headcanons are AMAZING, and you are amazing holy heck

Tablet Weaving (this looks so EFFING ADORABLE)

(this is a little tablet-weaving loom made of copper HOW CUTE IS IT, HOW EASILY CAN I SEE DORI USING IT oh my GOD)
I am so so SO on board with all of this, I can’t thank you enough. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
John Callen has received the book and Jed Brophy will receive his copy tomorrow. A friend of mine took pictures, which I can unfortuantely only show you, when we are both home again.
Gimizh sometimes gets Dori to fix up his hair like Nori’s. Dori gets all teary as he puts the peaks in red hair again.

Nori has so many bets on about Gimizh. So many. They used to be about whether or not he /would/ cause mayhem. Not they’re mostly about how much he can get away with and how many cookies he can steal.
pffft Nori would have lost a fuckton of money before he came to the realisation that when it comes to mayhem, Gimizh will. He always will.
I didn’t know it was your birthday. Happy birthday! Also, probably a bad time, but I had a sad HC to share. Nori, the first time after he died and Ori left for Moria, watching Dori trying to do his hair in his usual elaborate braids. Seeing him opening his mouth to call for one of his brothers, since he and Dori had helped each other since they were both old enough to braid. Sees the pause when Dori remembers that he’s all alone and watches him settle for a simpler style until he can practice.
AUGH *eats up the lovely, lovely angst alongside her cake* I LOVE ITTTT
All of the Dwalinuls take a bit after Dori? Wee Thorin is all sharp objects and knitting. Balinith is all For Science! And nice clothes and tea. Frerinith is fussy and also tea.
YES THEY DO, ALL OF THEM – thank you so much, I am so HAPPY you noticed, Nonnie! I have given all of the kids some of Dori’s influence, because I think he would have been very close to them all. Most trusted babysitter, honorary uncle, etc. So they’ve all got some characteristics and traits that stem from that proximity… all except Gimizh.
Wee Thorin is protective LIKE WHOA. Also knitting. And sighing.
Balinith is orderly, tidy and also SCIENCE, but he’s got a streak of sarcasm in him a mile wide. Sly insults ftw.
And tiny Frerinith is A FUSSY CUTIE PIE BOSSY-BOOTS 😀
(Alas, Gimizh has a hefty dose of Nori as well as Bofur, Gimris and Gimli in his character… which is probably makes Dori both sad and fond simultaneously.)
When I wrote that line about ‘Dori mothers the whole mountain in the absence of his brothers’, I totally, TOTALLY meant it with bells on and a cherry on top… also hello once more, my love of extreme character detail, there you are again
Gimizh has such a hero-worship for Nori that Dori ends up giving him A piece from Nori’s collection of little boxes. (Nori loves little boxes, especially with valuable shiny things inside) Gimizh treasures it, and keeps tiny treasures in it. Balinith also has one of Ori’s ink pots, a nice little purple glass one.

meanwhile, Dori is simultaneously proud that his brothers are not forgotten – far from it! – and wistful. Because Nori would have been a terrible influence on Gimizh, but my word, they both would have loved it. And Balinith and Ori would have been happily lost for DAYS in the library together.
Bofur totally made Gimizh a Nori doll. Gimizh loves it, and hearing stories about Nori. Dori is pleased and sad.
Oh MY GOD
YES
HOLY SHIT GIMIZH WOULD IDOLISE NORI LIKE WHOA (guess who is totally gonna try growing his eyebrows long enough to braid)
