I’m imagining Oin having a herb-growing room in the Halls, and being sort of confused about how all the plants grow so well without any natural light. And how plants from different climates are doing so well so close together. Like, the aloe is next to the juniper?
LMAAAAAO THAT DOES NOT GO??? DOES NOT WORK. WHAT THE ACTUAL HECK, MUSHROOMS GROWING RIGHT NEXT TO THYME AND SILVERBEET.
Ori would be confused right next to him. Bc Ori has already stated that he finds the whole… uhhh… things-manifesting-whenever-you-need-em unutterably weird. He’s still a bit iffy about where the paper comes from. I mean, don’t you need trees???
Oin: Uhhh. Idk. Want some potatoes?
Ori: … yes.
(he chews his food very gingerly, too. where’s it from, how’s that work, this place is SO WEIRD)
I didn’t know it was your birthday. Happy birthday! Also, probably a bad time, but I had a sad HC to share. Nori, the first time after he died and Ori left for Moria, watching Dori trying to do his hair in his usual elaborate braids. Seeing him opening his mouth to call for one of his brothers, since he and Dori had helped each other since they were both old enough to braid. Sees the pause when Dori remembers that he’s all alone and watches him settle for a simpler style until he can practice.
AUGH *eats up the lovely, lovely angst alongside her cake* I LOVE ITTTT
Dori gets woken up from his accidental at-work nap and is all “No, Ori, I’m working.” But it’s really Frerinith.
*hands over my heart* Here. You broke it, you fix it.
Little kid Ori who loves cats and gets Dori to draw cat whiskers on his face. It is adorable. (Later Dori will use this skill on Gimizh. It is also adorable.)
AHHHHH
AHHHHHHHHH
this is so danged CUTE
Gimizh has such a hero-worship for Nori that Dori ends up giving him A piece from Nori’s collection of little boxes. (Nori loves little boxes, especially with valuable shiny things inside) Gimizh treasures it, and keeps tiny treasures in it. Balinith also has one of Ori’s ink pots, a nice little purple glass one.

meanwhile, Dori is simultaneously proud that his brothers are not forgotten – far from it! – and wistful. Because Nori would have been a terrible influence on Gimizh, but my word, they both would have loved it. And Balinith and Ori would have been happily lost for DAYS in the library together.
It’s the Return of the Bride of the Monster of the Night of the HEADCANONPALOOZA!
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10
(this is what happens when I am too busy to get to tumblr for a few days, whoops – sorry sorry anons!!!)
BOFUR WOULD HAVE THE BEST GRANDUNCLE JOKES.
*battle flashbacks at the mention of Frozen* oh god, babysitting scars, I bear them…
Balinith toddling over to the shelf and declaring “BU!’ and choosing one and bringing it back to his parent to read it to him, until there is a pile fifteen books high beside Dwalin or Orla… aaand probably chucking a wobbly when it’s bedtime, because ‘NO NO NO MORE BU!’
(this is actually what the Dwarfling is doing RIGHT NOW. Her favourite is ‘Where is the Green Sheep’ by Mem Fox!!)
And hells YES – Gloin would be full of AMAZING advice (mostly the kind that sounds complicated, but in essence always boils down to ‘teach ‘em to be good Dwarves, and then trust ‘em to be good Dwarves’.)
Balinith really likes visiting Dori because Dori has all sorts of neat books around – they were Ori’s and Dori can’t bear to part with them. But he doesn’t mind little dwarflings reading them. Also. Dori lets Balin fiddle with yarn ends, which he likes.
YES, PERFECT.
Curious, clever, intent little Balinith is exactly the right person to entrust Ori’s old books to, to Dori’s mind. Gimizh would rip them to shreds, Wee Thorin barely cares, and Frerinith just chews on them.
(I bet he has yarn bookmarks for this purpose!)
Scribes getting tongue-piercings … Does that mean that Ori has his done?
Yep!
(As does Balin, being the Seneschal and First Advisor for so many years! Silver-tongued diplomatic old smoothie ❤ )
So Balin and Oin and Ori totally did letters before going off to Moria and they never got opened because no one was sure they were dead and it just seemed like inviting trouble? And so when Gimli comes home they get opened, finally, and it is Very Sad.
*whimpers*
