hey babes and huns and darlins all

It’s been a heck of a time lol. Sorry for the long long LONG silence. AGAIN. Urgh, I am shaking my head at myself, believe me. I am so crap at social media. All or nothing, that’s me.

Anyway. We had a loss in our family – the family member I mentioned who was sick has lost their fight after a long long battle, and so we’ve been dealing with how that affects us all. We all knew it was coming, just not when.

My little man is now 12 weeks old, and GOD he is gorgeous. Caring for him has been a snap so far. He’s a very chilled, cruisy, easy baby, thank fark.

*the 4-month sleep regression looming on the horizon, rumbling ominously* LALALALALALA NOPE. SO CHILLED. A REALLY CRUISY BABY. YES INDEEDY.

(tbh, parenting the Dwarfling takes WAY more effort than him at the moment! She’s at a very questioning, precocious, demanding sort of stage. Nearly 4yo now! WTH, WHERE DID THE TIME GO)

No writing has been happening, sad to say. The plan is to get to a point where I’m not collapsing each evening, and do some writing when the kids are in bed. So far, no dice. I’m still knackered!! But it WILL happen. I am not giving up this close to the finish line.

I hope you’ve all been amazing, and that life is treating you gently, all my beautiful fandom friends and pals and mates out there. I’ve had you all in my thoughts so often – in between endless loads of washing and feeding kids and changing nappies and racing around like a headless chook lolol. Sending you all a gigantic virtual hug.

lotsa love,

Dets

hey folks, leaping onto tumblr for a split second just to let you all know…

i am fine, we are fine. The Dwarflet made his entrance on Wednesday 7th March, and he is more than fine; he is amazing. It’s been a very long and difficult process this time around – and worth every. single. second.

We’re all home now and adapting to our new normal.

The Dwarfling is proving to be the world’s most incredible (and cutest) big sister.

Thank you to everyone who messaged me with expressions of support – It is hugely and honestly appreciated, from the bottommost bottom of my heart ❤

love you all LOADS, and I dearly hope to be more available online after a few weeks’ adjustment time 🙂

What Do I Post: fandom rambles and fanfic, meta sometimes, lots of excited flailing about movies and stuff bc I am a big nerd, rec lists and posts, reblogging the art of people who are TRULY astoundingly talented, ridiculous animals always, weird Australiana, social justice and world events, and finally environmental and conservation concerns… I think that covers everything!

Hey you haven’t been around for a while, everything alright?

yeah, just hot and tired and lacking in energy. I’m now 8 months pregnant, and urgh SUMMER IN AUSTRALIA. *suffers a sweltery humid death* Sorry for being a flake. Up-front, I don’t expect I will be any more reliable until after this bub has arrived, tbh. I am hermit-ising like whoa.

Also, if I can be frank, with my emotional (read: hormonal, GAHHHH) walls this thin and volatile, tumblr is just not a great place to be, honestly. There is so much outrage-porn and anger and the like, and I can’t handle it all the way I normally would. I can barely handle the news at the moment, even.

I am a bit of a wuss rn. Again, sorry. *sheepish look*

Reading Meme

I got tagged by @elenothar who is made of awesome. Hey mate! Long time no speaky!

1. Which book has been on your shelves the longest?

The Little Prince, by

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It’s been with me for over 30 years.

2. What is your current read, your last read and the book you’ll read next?

*nervous laughter*

Um, I honestly can’t remember what I read last. My brain is currently Swiss cheese… probably one of Dr Karl

Kruszelnicki’s fab books, I pop them like candy.

But I do know that I am waiting for Mr Dets to finish A Short History of Nearly Everything, by Bill Bryson. I got it for his birthday, but I also really wanna read it :)))

3. Which book does everyone like and you hated?

ummmmmmmmm… idk. I have found Asimov’s prose very dusty to get through in the past (and this is coming from a Tolkien fan). I like his world (universe?)-building though.

4. Which book do you keep telling yourself you’ll read, but you probably won’t?

Muuuuuuurrrr, tons of them most likely, but remember what I said about brain = Swiss cheese? Nothing is springing to mind!

5. Which book are you saving for “retirement?”

None of them ever ever ever, what the heck is the point of that?

6. Last page: read it first or wait till the end?

I always wait til the end – I don’t think I’ve ever spoiled the ending for myself tbh.

7. Acknowledgements: waste of ink and paper or interesting aside?

I like them.

8. Which book character would you switch places with?

Arrrrrrrrrrrgh decisions!

9. Do you have a book that reminds you of something specific in your life (a person, a place, a time)?

My ancient copy of LOTR. My uncle gave it to me, and Tolkien’s universe was a love we shared.

10. Name a book you acquired in some interesting way.

HAHAHAHAHAHA we have a book here that Mr Dets stole from his primary school library… it now belongs to the Dwarfling, and the school name and stamp is clearly visible on the inner leaf!

11. Have you ever given away a book for a special reason to a special person?

I give a LOT of books as presents, but I buy them specially… I’ve never really given away any of my own darlings! Which explains why we just remade/reorganised the ENTIRE FRONT HALF OF THE HOUSE so we could fit in yet.more.bookshelves lmao

12. Which book has been with you to the most places?

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Because irony 😀

13. Any “required reading” you hated in high school that wasn’t so bad ten years later?

I didn’t mind the ‘reading’ part of the required books, that was good! It was pulling them to pieces afterwards that I resented 🙂

On the other hand, I enjoyed Out of Africa as a kid, and it grated a LOT with me as an adult. Social evolution, I guess.

14. What is the strangest item you’ve ever found in a book?

My grandmother’s school report from 1936. She was 11.

15. Used or brand new?

Both is good.

16. Stephen King: Literary genius or opiate of the masses?

I’ve only read The Stand, so I don’t really feel qualified to answer. But why can’t a book be both, honestly? Media can be self-indulgent escapism AND genius simultaneously!

17. Have you ever seen a movie you liked better than the book?

*pokes Swiss cheese brain* come on, you dumb thing, work...

18. Conversely, which book should NEVER have been introduced to celluloid?

War of the Worlds. They’ve never, EVER, EVER done it right.

19. Have you ever read a book that’s made you hungry, cookbooks being excluded from this question?

*glares at everything written by Anthony Bourdain*

20. Who is the person whose book advice you’ll always take?

My ferociously smart MIL, who has fab taste in books.

I tag @poplitealqueen, @notanightlight, @peggaboo, @kailthia, @lesbiankiliel@fishfingersandscarves, @ginervcweasley, @poesiariptide and whoever else wants to do the thing!

*fluffs you a pillow and brings you your slippers* I hope that you’re doing ok. My Canadian self thinks you’re crazy for dealing with Aussie winters, but still. Lots of hugs for you!!

Awww thank you, Nonnie! Aussie winters are the mildest damn things ever. Heck, you’re Canadian so our winter is probably a nice early autumn day for you 😀

I am TERRIFIED of your winters, tbh. I can handle our stupid scorching summer heat, under normal circumstances. I cannot deal. with. cold.

Wussy lil me (and my hyper-reactive Raynauds Syndrome) moans and whimpers through even a winter in Sydney. I turned into a mute person-burrito when I visited the Snowies a few years back. Just the thought of how cold it gets in Canada makes me go laskdjgflajhd NUUUU

haven’t heard much from you recently, dets! how’ve you been?

Been okay! It’s very hot and humid here, lots of storms lately. And I’m honestly in awe of every person who has been pregnant in the Queensland summer. And i’m in South-East QLD too, the cushiest, least-sweltery part of the state.

I’ve had a LOT of visitors over the holiday period, and the Dwarfling has been home with me 24/7 also. So it’s been pretty busy!

Other than being an active little warrior in training, is the Dwarflet’s development going smoothly? Are you getting enough rest?

Dwarflet is developing just as they should, apparently! There was some extra attention paid to the scans/blood tests etc earlier on in the pregnancy, because I am 35+ years old. This puts the bub and I at a higher risk of certain complications and conditions – but no worries, as far as we know, we are both chugging along A-OK.

(Being 35+ years old, apparently this technically makes me an ‘elderly multigravida’… ELDERLY. Harrumph. ಠ_ಠ )

Anyway. Dwarflet is fine and feisty, measuring a little bigger than their gestational age. No risk of low birth weight for THIS kiddo, lmao. Considering that I am a short skinny lil muppet of a human, I am beginning to resemble a watermelon on stilts.

No, I am absolutely not getting enough rest, but that’s not uncommon for an Aussie summer pregnancy. It’s very hot and humid here rn!
