U for the Fanfic Writer ask

U: Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

hello!!!! gosh whenever i’m asked this i have such trouble bc i’ve been in fandom forever! 

i’m just gonna awkwardly plug @esselley for the nth time, because although i haven’t been in the HQ fandom long, it’s been undeniable from the start how affecting her stories are! AND SHE KEEPS GETTING BETTER!!!?? the last couple stories/chapters i’ve read of hers blew my mind because they were noticeably more, like… emotionally immersive than when i had first started getting into fandom and, obv, reading her must-reads (Hunger, for example – ALTHOUGH I REALLY RECOMMEND HER KAGESUGAHINA SERIES OK JUST DO IT), not that that her must-reads aren’t already incredible romances and adventures in and of themselves! also she’s so nice??? what’s that ABOUT HUH?!?!??

throwing in @determamfidd who in her 518,318 (and counting!) fic, Sansukh, has essentially rewritten the hobbit and lord of the rings trilogy featuring a tremendously diverse group of characters and FOCUSING on them – queer folks, people of color, women – exploring the themes that lotr and high fantasy are known for but updating/refocusing the story so it’s groundbreaking for 2017. she has truly developed the world tolkien created to be much more interesting and nuanced and “reachable” than the original books really were. she obviously has tremendous knowledge, and tremendous dedication, and tremendous ways of weaving a story. i have to catch up on her epic, but she has plenty of other wonderful fics as well.

one person whom i’ve followed forever is @emmagrant01. she’s been around since i joined fandom (Harry Potter), and i’ve always looked up to her as a writer for her genuine, engaging story-telling, and somehow we always happen to share at least one fandom even if we’ve not interacted at all. recently she wrote an epic canon divergent story for Check Please! with Jack Zimmermann POV and i lost my mind over it. it really helped me understand myself as a demi person – i rarely connect with characters the way i did with Jack. and she also developed OCs within that story who were so compelling, too! i haven’t caught up with what she’s writing right now but i look forward to reading literally anything she makes for the rest of existence.

Hey again, I’m the 36 hour anon :) I’m glad I could make your day a little better :) The teaching scene I talked about was the one where Thorin is showing Gimli how to smith the marriage bead, and beyond the cuteness of that whole exchange in and of itself, I had to put my phone down and cry when I realized he could work with gold again. And then Gimli set me off again when he realized it was gold and just KNEW. I’m a mess again oh my. That scene was utter perfection, my dear. :)

THANK YOU – I really loved writing those smithing scenes, how Gimli and Thorin are moving to a more friends-and-mentors relationship from the rather worshipful gratitude-infused one of before, how Thorin can DO this now and it doesn’t hurt – it’s a good thing, that he can give Gimli…

Rereading the last few chapters, and I noticed that Dwalin wasn’t surprised at all (not that he’d show it) when it comes to Orla’s heritage. Also that they’ve discussed, as a couple, what to do about it if it ever came up. How did he react when he learned about it? Did Orla tell him outright, or did she make some comment that was more than it seemed? I’m driving myself nuts trying to picture what happened!

Gimli’s letter precipitated a little chat that was quite a bit overdue. Orla REALLY didn’t want to talk about it (as you can tell), but she did. 

By the time Gimli makes it to Erebor, Dwalin is a whole bunch less wild-eyed about the notion… though it still makes what is left of his hair stand on end at times. But his main priority is definitely Orla’s happiness and wishes, and he’s behind her and supporting her all the way, no matter what pressure she’s under. If she’d wanted to be queen, he’d have supported her in that, too.

Hi! So I just wanted to let you know that I read Sansukh in around 36 hours and it made my life. I have smiled to split my face, laughed out loud, flailed, and ugly cried all in hours of each other, and that’s all thanks to your wonderful writing. I think I actually broke with the teaching scene. I don’t really get into fic as much anymore, but you changed that and I just wanted to stop by and say thank you for that. You (and the appendices authors) are absolutely amazing. ❤ Have a wonderful ❤

did you know that the main fic of sansûkh is only about 70000 words away from the total wordcount of war and peace? counting the appendices, (98k according to ao3) you (and the authors of other appendices) have surpassed it!! that’s super cool, congratulations!! (and it’s all fantastically written!)
