um, i cried during “Light on the Horizon” so um, just thought you should know that’s why I’m sitting here with tears on my keyboard. thanks. (no, seriously, thank you)

AWWWW OMG THANK YOU AHHH THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! (Dets is still a quivering eager wreck when it comes to her music, part the millionth lmao)

ummm i feel that, in the interests of disclosure, I have been listening to a lot of Eric Whitacre lately… and Paul Jarman… and Aaron Copland’s 12 Songs of Emily Dickinson too.

So, the next song in the works is… probablygonnahurtabitalso SORRY SORRY IN ADVANCE SORRY SORRY SORRY

what’s your opinion on derivative fanworks? I have a few plot bunnies(? idk what to call them) about Orla and that whole aspect, but it is your fic and your OC. ((also I’m not PoC so I’m a lil uncomfy about that – any advice?)

Nonnie, I am THRILLED TO BITS about them, and please let your imagination run riot!

My advice about writing Orla: she is a devoted mum, a loving wife and friend, a quiet-spoken Dwarrowdam of few words. If she has any particular fault, it is that she sometimes doesn’t speak up when she really REALLY should.

She is incredibly slow to anger, and she seldom laughs. Her wit is very subtle and quiet also and tends to be delivered in a swift, soft blow, like a dagger entering, soundless and abrupt. She is a tremendous warrior, with all the perseverance and application to detail that this suggests, and she does not talk about her past often. She looks to the future, always always always. The past hurts. She had hopes and aspirations for a whole people, a whole nation, and she was betrayed.

She isn’t one to dwell. She compartmentalises. She rebuilds.

Dwalin sees her as the most miraculous and precious person he has ever met. He’s still baffled as to why a goddess in her prime is married to a battered, heartsore old soldier like him – but he’s eternally grateful. They have a whole language of silences between them; they can have entire conversations with a flat look and a twitched eyebrow.

She is dear friends with Dis, Gloin, Dori and Thira. She finds Bofur slightly too much at times. She respected Dain, but wasn’t a big fan of pigs. She has a quiet pride in how much the Stonehelm has grown – but Bomfris’ undisciplined behaviour drives her up the wall

Her skin colour is part of her character. She’s black. I respectfully suggest that you mention it explicitly and plainly (no food metaphors!), and move on.

Also importantly, she is also a person with ties and relationships and thoughts, (most of which she keeps to herself) and all of the above is needed to make her her.

(if you are still uneasy or worried, check out the MANY MANY writing guides out there. There are roughly 10000+ for writing characters of colour).

This feeling, when you love Sansukh so much you basically refresh it everyday twice, just to make sure there was no update. Dets, you are amazing author and I adore you and this fanfic, its diversity and thoughtfulness and cuteness. Thanks to it I made peace with my bi/pansexuality. Thank you so much.

*hugs* Thank you, Nonnie, and congratulations to you. *MGA fistbump of solidarity*

Guh, I am still being flattened by work, and we had visitors over this weekend. So, no update yet (DAMMIT). I am inching ever closer, however!

(also: had a new idea for a song. DOUBLE GODDAMMIT. I don’t have the effort in me to make another Light on the Horizon!!! this one will likely be a LOT smaller, heheh)

current ch46 wordcount: 3K

Are nori, frerin and fili ever gonna meet their One? Love your fic btw

Hey Nonnie! Glad you like the story!

A note on the whole ‘Ones’ thing: no soulmates in Sansukh, sorry. I dislike the whole ‘predestination’ thing… I like free will. I also believe that it isn’t one person alone that could be ‘made for you’… you could be happy with any number of different people, but you have to choose them, choose it, and work at it, every day. A personal bias thingy there.

Nori explicitly tells us in the story that he and Dori are both aro-ace… well, actually, he specifies that Dori is aro-ace, and that he himself is definitely aro… perhaps not ace! But he ain’t telling. A Dwarf needs a few secrets, and Nori likes to keep folks guessing.

Fili’s storyline in this fic is not about romance, and I will not create one for him… his story arc is about stepping up to leadership in his own right.

(I hope you note that Nori was first calling Thorin ‘boss’… but now? Now he calls FILI ‘boss’. Also, Fili has developed a nearly pathological protective streak for Frodo a mile wide. He is becoming a leader and a protector in ways that have nothing to do with his bloodline and heritage. GO FILI, GO FILI, GOLDEN HEART MY SON, YOU LITTLE BEAUTY)

Frerin has the crush to end all crushes on both Eowyn AND Faramir. But also recall, he still has the body and emotional responses of a mid-teen. Poor boy has the intellect of a much, much older Dwarf, but it’s crammed into a tiny body with a truckload of hormones. I don’t think we will see him in actual, reciprocal romantic love in this state.

(but hey, we have good evidence that he is at the very least bisexual, and that he is hella poly.)

Fandom Fic Rec Days: Bagginshield WIP Edition

nasturtian:

Let’s begin with @stasiaonline’s “Unexpected Music", even though it’s not going to be a WIP much longer – two chapters to go!!!! *sobs* It’s a rockstar!Thorin/chemistry professor!Bilbo AU with an complex and enjoyable storyline, wonderful characters, trauma, drama, romance, smut, humor, international intrigue, and a whole lot of FANTASTIC cooking. Seriously, I’ve gotten some great recipes from the notes on this thing! Most impressive of all is how Stasia updates this beast (over 118 easy-to-absorb-length chapters so far) EVERY. SINGLE. SATURDAY. I’ve been following this story for over a year now and she hasn’t missed ONE WEEKEND. So if you are looking for a great story that is heading down the homestretch towards its finale, head on over to AO3 and hit that “subscribe” button, baby.

Next up, another nearly-finished-WIP – @determamfidd’s epic “Sansûkh” (and I’m not throwing the term “epic” around lightly here). It’s not exactly a fix-it, since the events of “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” are not so much altered as enlarged upon, but OH LORD it fixes so much. While at the same time breaking your heart into a thousand, thousand pieces. I have never cried over any fic as hard as I have over this one. (That’s a selling point, btw.) This is the fic that sold me on Gigolas, but the agony and ecstasy of Bilbo and Thorin’s relationship is what holds my heart in thrall. So many people have been moved to create art, music, costumes, and more by this story, and for good reason – it’s in a class by itself. AND it’s got a chapter count now! 45 down, 5 to go!

Another modern AU now – “Dust in the Road,” the sequel to the amazing “A Remover of Obstacles”, by MistakenMagic (alas I do not think she has a tumblr). You should definitely read “Obstacle” first – Thorin doing yoga! Genderbent Fili! Incredibly well-done and therefore harrowing portrayals of PTSD! Unicorn footie PJs! Service dogs! Phone sex! AND MORE. Just…read the tags carefully, there are some potentially triggering scenes in later chapters (well-flagged though). Anyway “Dust in the Road” is The Continuing Saga, missing scenes, that sort of thing.

Finally, @bilboo‘s “Where Have All the Flowers Gone” – a WWII AU. The AO3 summary says it best: At the eve of the second World War, Lieutenant Colonel Thorin Durin sends his young nephews – his only remaining family – to live safely in the countryside. Fili and Kili end up staying with Bilbo Baggins, in his cozy little house virtually in the middle of nowhere. The boys and their Uncle exchange letters, the soldier understandably worried about how they’re being treated, and soon, Bilbo sees it fit to start adding little messages of his own – unbeknownst to him, Thorin begins cherishing those almost as much as his nephews’ words. Epistolary fiction! Long-distance pining! GREAT STUFF.

And that’s it for the Bagginshield WIPs that are currently lighting up my life! Next up: Johnsquared WIPs.

omg NAS

thank you so so much, you stunning and wonderful human, thank you SO much!

Fic rec!

korepersephone:

So I finally started reading Sansukh and omg it is just as good as everyone says! I was gonna wait until it was done but there’s only 5 chapters left and the last one posted wasn’t a cliffhanger so I can be patient (like Thorin and Bilbo) for the rest!

And there’s so much art and related fic and music to make you cry and a podfic I want to audition for once they open submissions again.

aaaaah thank you so so much!
