It’s time for another cosplay progress report for the Barís costume from Sansukh! I have now completed the bum roll and the bodice for the undergown. You will note that the bum roll I made is about half the size of an actual period-accurate one, but since the silhouette of the gowns worn by the dwarrowdams of Erebor was not as full at the hips as a true renaissance gown, I figured that’s fitting. The straps for the undergown bodice are also JUST a touch long, but if I shorten them then I lose all freedom of movement, so I figure I’ll just go with the length they are, and remember than length difference when i pattern the overgown.

Next step is to drape the muslin for the lining of the undergown skirt, to check the pattern I’ve created. If that works, then I’ll sew and attach both layers of the skirt for the undergown. I don’t have enough jacquard to be able to afford an error on the skirt, though, so it’s crucial to work everything out in muslin first.

After many months of working on this off and on, I finally have progress to report on my Barís cosplay from Sansukh: the corset is complete! Shown here with the chemise I posted awhile ago, this corset is 100% hand sewn, and made from cotton duck, 3/4″ flat steel boning, and satin ribbon. The pattern I used is an authentic English renaissance design.

You will note that, unlike a Baroque or Victorian corset, this corset is not meant to give the body curves or make the waist look tiny. Rather, it gives the body smooth lines, and emphasizes the cleavage. This is consistent with the general dress shapes we see in the brief flashes of dwarrowdams in Erebor in the films. Also, as an added bonus, it can be used under any renaissance gown I care to sew.

Next step will be to make the bumroll and petticoat, and then I can get started on the kirtle that serves as the undergown.

And now, in the genre of TRULY random things I’ve podficced, here is a crossover between the Silmarillion and Star Wars, featuring Narvi and Celebrimbor as ancient Jedi. This little fic is by the wonderful @jedi-goldberry-with-the-force, who shares my extremely esoteric tastes enough to have written something that fits so many different I like into such a small package. @poplitealqueen, this one is for you, because you are the one that got me interested in crossing these fandoms over, and because I know things have been hard lately. I hope this provides you with some cheer.

How to Podfic: A Highly Biased and Incomplete Tutorial

So, a while ago, some of my friends and fellow cast members of the @sansukhpodfic asked about how to make and edit podfic on their own. I created this tutorial for them, as a supplement to the resources already posted by the Sansukh mods. In the wake of the most recent @auralphonic episode asking for technical advice on podficcing in Audacity, I thought I would polish this up and post it.

This tutorial explains how,
once you have permission to record a story, you go about turning it into
podfic using Audacity. It focuses on technical and logistical details, rather than
artistic advice, and is cobbled together from my own experience, my knowledge of the mathematics behind signal analysis, and other people’s tutorials. There’s lots of communities and resources out there
that give advice on the artistic side (Auralphonic, for example, has an
episode for newbies), which I recommend checking out.

Disclaimer:
There is no one standard method of doing this! This is the method I
have found gives me the best results, personally, but there may be
better ways to do this. I strongly recommend checking out other resources
for comparison.

So, we totally failed at getting the photos up in a timely manner, but a few weeks ago, another small Sansukh Cast meetup occurred (okay, really it was just @aviva0017 hanging out with me for one night, but I firmly maintain that meetups of two people count.) A delightful time was had by all. We ate the pie I had baked to reward myself for actually being a responsible adult and cleaning the place for once, and Avi decided to test out how well I she could make me look like a guy. I think she succeeded rather well, which is slightly disturbing, because I look EXACTLY like my younger brother in these photos.

So Cloaked and So Crowned [Podfic] – the_dragongirl – The Lord of the Rings – All Media Types [Archive of Our Own]

I am so very excited to present to you all: a podfic of So Cloaked and So Crowned, by @determamfidd. This podfic is special to me in so many ways. First, because it’s been a long time in progress (I started working on this over a month ago). Second because Dets actually composed a piece of original music to serve as the intro and extro for this, and I got to perform that with her (that music will be posted on tumblr soon). Third, because I commissioned @poplitealqueen to draw the cover, and what she came up with is AMAZING.

And finally, because this is my 50th podfic. That’s right folks; in the roughly half a year I have been doing this, I have posted a total of 50 of these. It has been quite the journey. I have gone from not really know that podfic is a thing to having it consume my free time entirely. Yet I have no regrets, because podficcing has brought me so much joy, and so many good friends. Here’s to the next 50!
