I’m a huge Gimli/Legolas BroTP fan, and I never noticed this.
But yes. Every step along the way, Legolas is keeping an eye on Gimli, making sure he hasn’t passed out or died or gotten lost. And he’s not going to say anything. He’s not going to make a big deal about it, because they’re not officially friends or anything, and besides, Gimli’s a proud dwarf. He wouldn’t want an Elf prince checking up on him.
But still, as discreetly as he can, Legolas is doing exactly that.

We have heard tell that Legolas took Gimli Gloin’s son with him because of their great friendship, greater than any that has been between Elf and Dwarf. If this is true, then it is strange indeed: that a Dwarf should be willing to leave Middle-earth for any love, or that the Eldar should receive him, or that the Lords of the West should permit it.

It is based on a scene from @determamfidd‘s fic Sansukh (which if you haven’t read you should totally go and do so). I am super impressed with tosquinha’s work here because I didn’t really give her much to go on as she isn’t up-to-date with the most recent chapters and I was trying to avoid big spoilers. But the way she has drawn them and how they are looking at each other kills me :DDD
