I DID IT YESSSSSSSS

For the ongoing hobbit4ham shenanigans! This is a recorded version of ‘Wait For It’ as sung by Bilbo, with added accompaniment and chorus bc reasons.

(HEY @culturalrebel I WENT NUTS AGAIN)

(originally posted here, lyrics reproduced under the cut heeeeey)

[BILBO]
Writing out the story in the Red Book every day
I’m keeping the lamp lit while your light is away
He’s on the other side of twilight,
He tried to take back what was his,
But now the nights are growing darker,
and it is what it is.

Love doesn’t discriminate
Between the sinners
And the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
And we keep loving anyway
We laugh and we cry
And we break
And we make our mistakes
And if there’s a reason beyond my pride
That I stayed by his side
Then I’m willing to wait for it
I’m willing to wait for it

My grandfather was a Thain and a great tactician
But there are things of which the Shire has no suspicion
My mother loved adventure
My father commanded respect
When they died they left no instructions
Just a legacy to protect

[BILBO/DEAD DWARF PEANUT GALLERY]

Death doesn’t discriminate
Between the sinners
And the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
And we keep living anyway
We rise and we fall
And we break
And we make our mistakes
And if there’s a reason I’m still alive
When everyone who loves me has died
I’m willing to wait for it
I’m willing to wait for it

[DEAD DWARF PEANUT GALLERY ]
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it

[BILBO]
Nothing is left in my life I can control

[DEAD DWARF PEANUT GALLERY]
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it

[BILBO]
I am disreputable,
I am now a fairy tale

[DEAD DWARF PEANUT GALLERY]
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it

[BILBO]
Always falling behind or there too late

[DEAD DWARF PEANUT GALLERY]
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it

[BILBO]
Now all I have left is to grow old and wait

[DEAD DWARF PEANUT GALLERY]
Wait
Wait
Wait

[BILBO]
Frodo faces an endless uphill climb

[ DEAD DWARF PEANUT GALLERY]
Climb
Climb
Climb

[BILBO]
He has to save us all
He is so very small

[ DEAD DWARF PEANUT GALLERY ]
Small
Small

[BILBO]
The Enemy’s pace is relentless
He wastes no time

[ DEAD DWARF PEANUT GALLERY ]
Time
Time
Time

[BILBO]
Still Frodo answers the call.

The Ring doesn’t hesitate
It exhibits no restraint
It takes and it takes and it takes
And it will exploit any way
It eats you alive from inside
and it gnaws and it breaks
And if there’s a reason
It came to me when none could foresee, then damn it all —

[BILBO/DEAD DWARF PEANUT GALLERY]
I’m willing to wait for it
I’m willing to wait for it…

Life doesn’t discriminate
Between the sinners and the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
And we keep living anyway
We rise and we fall and we break
And we make our mistakes

And if there’s a reason I’m still alive
When so many have died
Then I’m willin’ to—

[BILBO]
Wait for it…

Wait for it…

OK so I don’t actually use Tumblr, but I needed to comment here so I made an account…. I was lying in bed flipping through your post history looking for awesome L/G arts when suddenly one of the Bagginshield posts hit me hard in the feels.  I want to thank you because thanks to all the stuff I saw there today, I just realized this incredible parallel between Bilbo and Thorin: the Ring’s effects are so similar to dragon sickness, maybe that is how Bilbo became one of only two people who were ever able to give up the Ring.  He knew first-hand what mindless obsession with an accursed treasure can do to you and those you love.  I swore I wasn’t going to turn to the Bagginshield side of the Force and here I go anyway… you are very persuasive!  😉

I have to post this in order to answer, I’m afraid, bc your askbox is closed and you have submitted this rather than sending an ask! So I hope you do not mind, @lotrtafkab but I didn’t want you to feel like I was ignoring you!

Yeah! The creeping, insidious nature of obsession and how twisted and cruel and malignant it can be – that’s been commented on quite a bit in Hobbit fic when it comes to the dragon-sickness and/or the Ring… and not just by me, but by LOTS of people! I’m very happy you like the way I approached it 🙂 Thank you!

A question that popped in my head when you talked about the affect that the Ring had on Bilbo. How do the Elves handle his outbursts of anger, and suspicion, and paranoia? Or does he still have them as badly now that the Ring has been out of his possession for some time, or can they still crop up from time to time? Btw, you’re so super sweet to give such detailed and amazing insights into all these characters, and I’m super excited to see where you take this epic story. <3

Headcanony things to follow, all totally subjective!

They’re receding, yes. Mentions of the Ring can bring a resurgence of vague anger, possessiveness and secretiveness. However, as his mind begins to drift and age creeps up on him at last, the obsession is beginning to fade. It took the very sight of it to bring Bilbo to near-violence, after all… and even then he controlled himself (brrr).

The Elves have not really been subjected to any unpleasantness: these matters, as Bilbo would say, are his own private business and no nosy busybodies need go poking about. He would most likely seclude himself when he has a “funny turn”. I expect he always did, tbh, and didn’t realise that it was the Ring encouraging to do so, pushing him further into his own isolation.

Thank god for Frodo.

It’s remarkable, actually, just how resilient Hobbits are – and Bilbo in particular. I honestly don’t know if anyone else could have carried the Ring for so long, and retained so much of themselves. But yeah. Thank god for Frodo. Those 12 years that Bilbo lived with Frodo might (and this is just a personal idea) have been the saving of him.

(And you are super-sweet to say so! Thank you so much!)

A long time ago when you answered an ask about how Thorin’s family would react to Bilbo and you mentioned Bilbo seeing one of Thrain’s bad days and the two of them talking and understanding what Rings of Power do got me thinking. Does Bilbo ever have bad days? Not on the level of Thrain or Thror but still, the Ring’s gotta have messed him up a bit (plus what like 70 years of isolation on top of that)? What would a baddish day for Bilbo be like (and how would Thorin deal with it)?

(Here is that post, for the curious).

Oh yes, Bilbo had bad days.

Not on the level of Thrain, no. Thrain has terrible, terrible dissociation issues, the aftermath of physical and psychological torture. He’s so strong, though. He’s healing. And he is, first and foremost, there for his family – just as they are for him.

The way I am writing the Ring, it remains mostly dormant during its stay with Bilbo. It grows in power as Sauron’s strength waxes. Even though it is not at full strength, it is still a huge weight to carry and a massive distortion upon Bilbo’s life – particularly because Bilbo carried it for so, so long.

It increased his life-span, yes. But I also think it increased his secrecy, to the point of paranoia almost. Anxiety, reclusiveness, obsessiveness, suspicion. I think these would have been linked to the Ring’s influence on Bilbo.

Anger is also inextricably linked to the Ring – it delights in discord. The older Bilbo gets, the more snappish he gets. I think he would have moments of inexplicable anger. At Thorin for dying, at himself, at nothing in particular – and everything. When they pass, he would be drained and sad.

I think Thorin would try and be heard by Bilbo in those moments. I think Thorin would desperately call to his Hobbit, pleading with him, hoping that the inconstant blessing of his Gift would help him break through.

Quick question, in Sansukh how do Fili and Kili feel about Frodo? We all know how popular Sam is with the dwarves, but I’ve been wondering how they are reacting emotionally while watching Frodo struggle as the ring bearer. Do they recognize that the power of the ring is affecting his mind(considering that they saw Thorin go through a sort of similar experience with the gold sickness)?

They feel a huge amount of pity and care and sympathy for Frodo – and they ALSO think he is probably changing into the strongest person they have ever seen.

When Frodo first volunteers to take the Ring, Kili is basically flapping madly and going “AHH SO LITTLE AND BRAVE AHH”.

Fili is our POV character for the vast amount of their scenes, and he is slightly awed by Frodo’s endurance and strength and forbearance. He is also amazed at how a simple Hobbit is growing into something beyond what he was, through this mammoth act of will.

They definitely recognise the effects of the Ring. Oh my goodness, yes. Both of them. That’s not a thing you can ignore (particularly with Gollum right there for comparison).

I think that maybe that most of the people who “heard” the One Ring, like fili and kili and nori, would go and have a quiet chat w/Thror or Thrain. Because how did they deal with one of those for decades?

Ahhhh I’m really really glad you asked actually! I’ve put MASSES of thought into that particular aspect. Okay, I’m paraphrasing a bit from canon here, but this is where the whole ‘hearing the One Ring’ stuff came from, and how Thrain and Thror were able to bear their ring without going totally postal.

The Dwarf-rings did not have the same effect as the other Rings of Power. They have no voice, only malevolent magic.

When Aule made the Dwarves he made them knowing that Melkor was still about, still twisting things into unrecognisable evil – and so he made them incredibly resistant in every way. When Sauron made and gifted the Seven to the Dwarves, he actually fucked up a bit.

The Dwarves do not lightly accept another’s rule over their own will. They are WAY too tough. No Dwarf-Lord ever became a wraith the way that the Kings of Men did. They retained their form and their own mastery. The Seven didn’t even turn them invisible. And so the Rings got handed down generation after generation, and Sauron had expended all that power and effort for nothing.

But.

Instead of making their wills subject to Sauron, the Seven Rings encouraged covetous behaviour in their bearers. They could make whatever the Dwarves mined grow manyfold. They became eager for dominion. Huge treasure-hoards built up around the Rings, which in turn attracted dragons. (Sound familiar?)

Sauron got pissed off about his failure to corrupt the Dwarves, though, and so he tried to gather the Seven back to himself (tantrum, much). Four of the Seven were eaten by dragons, and three he managed to get back eventually. The last one, the Ring of Durin, he took from Thrain in Dol Guldur. These three rings are the prizes he offers to Dain in return for information on Bilbo Baggins (and Dain basically does the equivalent of ‘hold music’ while he gets Elrond’s advice).

So that’s what Thrain and Thror both experienced. It would have felt like their own thoughts, and it would only be in hindsight that they could see how far from themselves they roamed. But the One is a different beast altogether.

Throughout the fic, I’m having the One Ring grow in power as Sauron’s strength waxes. It remains mostly dormant while with Bilbo (we don’t see it growing heavier as swiftly as it does with Frodo – Bilbo has no chain-scar on his neck), and wakens more and more on the journey.

When Bilbo first gives it away it does not have the power to tempt Thorin. He looks at it lying on Bag End’s steps where Bilbo dropped it – and nothing happens. It only has the power to attract the living, and even then it is not the irresistible force it becomes.

By the time it reaches Rauros, it has begun to weigh on Frodo – and it has the power to tempt the desperate. Boromir falls.

By the time it is in the Dead Marshes, it can feel its Master’s nearness and has grown in power. It casts about, and finds the dead. Thorin and Kili hear it. It seeks to sow discord and fear, and it succeeds. It also seeks Thorin’s Gift – can you imagine how useful that would be, to Sauron?

By the time they reach Cirith Ungol, it has become even more potent. Yikes.

Definitely, they should all go have a good natter. I think Thror would be the best bet for advice, and Thrain would be the best bet for comfort. Thror is pretty bald and blunt about what happened: he will not allow himself any pity, it’s one of the ways he indulges that terrible guilt of his (SNAP OUT OF IT THROR, jeez, if Thorin can do it). He’d be up-front and matter-of-fact and understanding, though. Thrain would probably not want to talk about it, but he would be the one who gives the massive bear-hug and hot drink and blanket and corner in his forge to hide in.

Good lord, this answer meandered everywhere: sorry Nonnie!
