I just realised I have no idea how Dain and Thira met. Have you written about it in the fic, or in an ask before? And if not, would you care ho enlighten us? Otherwise I’ll just stick to my stupid headcanon ^^

Hey Boo!

Ahhhh no probs! (I AM SURE YOUR HEADCANON IS AWESOME, YOU STOPPIT). I wrote it up in Thira’s Meet a Dwarrowdam blurb. I have reposted it below, so you don’t have to go a-hunting!

(I BET YOUR HEADCANON IS BETTER TBH)

Meet a Dwarrowdam: Thira, Queen of Erebor

Thira was the daughter of mastersmiths Hori and Theki, both Burned Dwarves of the Battle of Azanulbizar. After the loss of her parents, she made her way as a refugee to the Iron Hills. She arrived young, poor and determined to make a name for herself. Her talent lay in her smithing: Thira was the finest and most skilled steelsmith to emerge from the Iron Hills in decades. Her mail was sought after by all, and she was able to count Kings amongst her clients. One of her greatest works was a brigandine gifted to the King-in-exile, Thorin Oakenshield, as a present from his cousin Dáin.

Soft-spoken, intensely private, but as true and strong and determined as the steel she loves, Thira is tall, wiry and black-haired with dark skin that has been reddened by her forge over the decades. She met Dáin, the new Lord of the Iron Hills, through her work. He did not recognise the attraction at first, due to his great grief and his heavy burden of care after the death of his father and the settling of so many refugees. Thira, however, was patient. She brought him a gift of a new iron foot, set about with cunning straps and workings to make his walking easier. As Dáin walked with new purpose, he was able to recognise the kindness that had prompted such a gift. He began to frequent her workshop more often. They were married in TA 2854, and their only child Thorin, called the Stonehelm, was born in 2866.

An introvert, Thira was uncomfortable with her elevation to prominence, especially after the reclamation of Erebor, and mostly stayed in her forges and out of the spotlight. Her shrewd husband accepted this, and sought her advice in privacy.

On the topic of Thorin III/awkward butterknife, do you have a headcanon for where the epithet “Stonehelm” actually came from?

Yes I do!

At first I actually thought it would be a battle thing – that he gained it during BOTFA by headbutting people like his dad. (which he would have – his nutting ability is mighty and to be feared.)

Now I sort of want it to be a nickname that becomes an epithet… ish? That a small Thorin in the Iron Hills once got so cross at a battle-ram that he headbutted it squarely – and the ram ran away.

So, he got called ‘Stonehelm’ as a little one, and it stuck (much the same way that Wee Thorin is stuck with ‘Wee Thorin’, lol). Nowadays, most Dwarves would believe that the epithet refers to his battle-bonce, but a select few know better.

when Jeri hears the story from Thira, they don’t stop teasing the Stonehelm about it for a whole week

Dain would totally pull a Vili and go and watch Thira at a certain time each day. Maybe they had a special time, where they would just spend time together? That’s when he goes, and he stands by her or sits across from her, commenting on her newest projects or what trouble Thorin & Co. are getting into now.

*lip trembles*

He would.

And I expect it was at day’s end, myself. When all the business of the kingdom and the forge was done, and they could shed the skins they had to wear for the benefit of others, and just be themselves in each other’s company.

AUGH, NONNIE.
