oh my gosh, yeah, I’ve blabbed on this idea before, and my first thought was that perhaps he gained the epithet in battle
but then
I thought: ‘what if he headbutted a battle-ram when he was a little kid…
..and the ram ran away bleating.’
And everyone in Erebor thinks it’s totally a battle-earned epithet. But EVERYONE from the Iron Hills of a certain age knows that it is a nickname that Dain gave his son.
Thorin Stonhelem’s design and inspirtion is from @determamfidd. Akhsan is loosely based on Martin Sensmeier… because of course.

head jerked up at the sound of the click,
click of footsteps on the dark stone. The oil lamp set
before him had almost gone and it was burning low – in a few
minutes, it would plunge into him and the tomb into darkness. Still
he remained, staring, staring at the stone.
“It
didn’t go… it didn’t go as expected,” Thorin whispered to
himself. He could still smell the burning of the mountain; even as
the fires in the stores lay extinguished, the smoke yet curled and
nestled into every nook and cranny of Erebor, ash flickering down
onto the wasted battlefield below.
