So what if the orcs we see as being leaders were actually high elves/elves that were old or especially wise, and were taken by Morgoth or Sauron for this purpose? I mean, there are many elves that are presumed dead, or with all the battles could have been spirited away. (pointedly doesn’t look at Maglor here)

LOTS of elves, yeah! Tolkien does mention specifically in the Silm that Melkor nicked the Elves who ran away when

Oromë invited everybody to the party in Valinor. So, they would have been of the Avari mostly, I guess. 

There’s a hint in Morgoth’s Ring (THOME) that some leaders amongst the Orcs were in fact Maiar who had chosen Orc-form rather than Man-shape like Gandalf and his pals. The Great Goblin is suggested to be one of these (!!). 

But there’s nothing to suggest that Elves of other clans/families might not have been stolen later on, too! idk, I really have no idea on this particular issue. I was just trying to answer the question as best I could 🙂

(the idea of an Orc whose eyes glitter with a strange light sometimes, whose fingers ache for harp-strings instead of the hilt of his wicked sword, who is ever-driven by a terrible unending compulsion – as though words spoken long ago are whipping at his heels –  is a very very heartbreaking one, Nonnie. Ouch.)

I know this is sort of random, but what do you think happens to Orcs once they die? Google has been rather unhelpful, and since nobody seems to be sure I figured I’d go to you since you have really good headcanons and know your stuff.

Okay, let’s try something. We know that Orcs are descended from Elves that were corrupted by Melkor. So, perhaps it is that they go to a separate part of Mandos’ halls.

We also know that Mandos holds onto those souls that need to be held *smiles sweetly at Feanor*. He keeps them within his halls and does not allow them to be reborn. It’s like Elven purgatory, I suppose. 

So Mandos probably doesn’t allow those souls to be reborn as Elves until they have been renewed, refreshed and uncorrupted? idk. That’d take millennia for some of those Orcs (hey hey Azog, cheers Gothmog, you boys are nasty). 

Considering that the entire recorded history of Middle-Earth isn’t actually all that long, I suggest that many of those former Orcs will only be released after the final battle, when all evil and sorrow is finally gone from the world and everybody can start again. 

Okay – that’s ONE idea! I’m sure other people have other ideas, though. I hope it’s helpful to you, Nonnie! 🙂

This Site has many fonts, based on Tolkien’s writing and the movies. Several versions of Tengwar, Bilbo’s handwriting, Moon Runes, and various Dwarven Runes to name a few. I counted 23 fonts. All free as far as I could tell. This is the largest free database of Tolkien fonts I’ve ever found.

These download as TrueTypeFontFiles, meaning it can be incorporated into a Tumblr Theme. Instructions here and here.
Also, it can be added to your computer’s font collection to use in other things. (I do not recommend attempting to turn your homework in with these fonts. Remember, Times New Roman, not Times New Elven)

I really like the idea of – so, since elves do have to stay in mandos a little while before being reimbodied. Fëanor would be there. So, going off the other anon, every single elf reimbodied since Fëanor died have experienced Fëanor’s angry yelling *at least* once. (and, in the background, Maglor bangs his head against the wall while Maedhros eagerly demands the latest news of what Elrond’s gotten up to, what do you *mean* he had twin sons, this is great, finally he will know our pain)
