If you thought lightsabers were only for combat and self-defense, prepare to be amazed as students from the École de l’Harmonie St Édouard and École secondaire de La Seigneurie in Quebec perform the Star Wars theme using lightsaber bows to play their violins:
… You guys. You don’t understand the depth of my feelings for these two–especially with this song.
You see, this is a love that seems doomed from the start, you know? Aside from the fact that Legolas is immortal and Gimli is mortal (oh god), the hatred between their families goes way, way back, both stemming from their races’ culture and their families’ personal history with each other. They were meant to hate each other at first sight–and that’s exactly what happened. They despised each other when they first met; or rather, they despised the idea of who the other was supposed to be.
In the course of the Quest, they slowly came to discover how wrong they both were.
The grudging friendship evolved into stalwart loyalty. To the point that even when Legolas was hearing the call of the Sea, when his grief was threatening to make him fade, he stayed for Gimli, because Gimli all but asked him to stay, because Gimli will miss him.
And then Gimli – dear, stubborn Gimli – defied the very nature of who he is a Dwarf when he left behind everything – his family, his kingdom – to sail to the West with Legolas, to the Undying Lands where Legolas will finally be reunited with his family, even though – AND THIS IS THE PART WHICH KILLS ME THE MOST – Gimli is still mortal, and he only bought himself a little more time to be with Legolas because he will still die in the Undying Lands.
And here’s the most painful part: Legolas will have to wait for him. Legolas, being an immortal Elf, will have to wait until Arda is remade (into the Earth that we all know) for him to be reunited with Gimli.
Legolas will literally have to wait for millennia to be reunited with his friend, and if that’s not love, then I don’t know what is.
