Hi Dets! I am LOVING Sansukh, only discovered it a month ago and have read it through twice. Such great OCs – especially all the women. (LOVE Hrera and Fris). One question, though: Do you have a master list of all the Dwarrow dark names and their meanings in Khuzdul? I know you have several awesome dramatis personae lists and family trees but I can’t seem to keep track of the dark names and meanings.

Aw, thank you so much! And sure – here you go!

Any idea what Vili’s parents thought of him marrying Dis?

Var was a stonemason, and his wife Tillís was a scaffolder and mine-shorer. They both died fairly young, unfortunately – malnutrition and disease carried them off, as it did so many poorer people during the years of want. Vili was brought up by his aunt Vilia, a cheerful and absentminded Dwarrow who was loving, if totally scatterbrained and unprepared to raise a child.

Var and Tillís watched their boy with absolute astonishment when he bumped into, and subsequently fell boots over beard for, the displaced princess Dis. They’d thought their boy was a good lad, but not the sort to catch the eye of royalty.

During the ensuing scandal, Var gloomily predicted that Dis would give up her common sweetheart. Tillís just worried about it all, really. She grew fond of Dis quickly, and didn’t want to see anybody hurt.

When Dis defied all convention by marrying Vili and removing herself from the line of succession, Var had to eat a certain amount of humble pie. Tillís was over the moon – particularly after Fili was born. Tillís is absolutely the kind of grandmother who will sit you down and make you look at all her grandchildren’s pictures for hours and hours on end. 😀

sad thought. who looks after the dead babies and toddlers in the halls? presumably their parents would still be alive, so do their other family members look after them? is there like a daycare centre of them? or does mahal reforge their souls and give them another chance at life if he thinks they’re too young? but how young would be too young? or old i guess. sorry this is a sad ask :(

Oh, I have sort of answered this here. Short answer – yeah, they get reforged and sent back out into the world! 😀

I hope this isn’t silly but I’ve just really wanted to know for a long time – why does Hrera disapprove of her family’s hair and beard choices so much? What are they doing that’s so wrong? Is it because they aren’t wearing it in a style she prefers? What does she consider to be ideal? Do they look silly after she gets her hands on them since they seem to want to laugh at each other a lot?

I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED ACTUALLY

No, they don’t look silly after she’s got her paws on them. They look magnificent, actually.

I have headcanoned Broadbeams as having some seeeerious ways of styling. This is, admittedly, only based on Bifur’s and Bombur’s awe-inspiring do’s.

Hrera’s own hair is very fancy. She routinely braids her beard along her chin so that it looks like icicles falling, each braid tipped with a glittering pearl or diamond. She believes that these silly Longbeards are far too lackadaisical about one of the crowning jewels of dwarfdom: their hair. When she first meets Thror, he has his hair bound in working-braids much like Gimli’s – and they offend her right down to the bedrock. She changes that, thank you very much – her husband will not be seen with his hair and beard looking so shabby! A King should look like one, and take better care of his beard, harrumph. It’s thanks to her that Thror has the super-magnificence of beardliness that can only be matched by Gloin (and Firebeards have a certain natural abundance that is to be very envied, so Hrera’s influence is not to be underestimated).

Hrera is a silversmith, she makes the most fabulous clasps that can be imagined, and they are nearly always about hair. Thorin’s simple style sends her into a terrible tizzy. Kili sends her into hysterics. Gimli’s total distinterest in oiling and braiding at all makes her huff VERY LOUDLY.

Her Longbeard family understands that she has a cultural bugbear about this, and they accept it with love. They’re not laughing at her. Only at her fervour. It’s a sort of familial in-joke, the kind that comes from having mixed families with cultural idiosyncrasies. They’re not making fun of her, I promise – they’re really incredibly proud of their fierce Broadbeam matriarch. It’s only that she is so very intense about hair

I hope that explains it! 😀
