Moria
Six months previous to the Fellowship setting out from Rivendell (Scotland Yard) – a special unit of Erebor’s officers were selected by Superintendant Balin to aid in the retaking of Khazad-dum (Edinburgh) from gang control. Working undercover and in a contact blackout in a safehouse lovingly referred to as ‘Moria’, or the ‘Black Pit’ – Balin’s team included toughened old coppers and young technical specialists alike, and Gimli was sure that even though no contact had been made (even at the four month checkpoint) since they left – they’d help harbor the Fellowship in their passage though Edinburgh.
The Black Pit’s door was locked from the inside.

Oh Balin. BALIN. BAAAAAALIN.
munDain headcanon: The white in his hair has been there since Azanulbizar. When asked about it by a very young Thorin Stonehelm, he makes up silly stories, never telling the same one twice. “Ah, there was an incident with some paint” “Did I ever tell you what happens when your hair freezes, my lad?” He never tells Thorin that the white came from looking inside Khazad-dum and seeing what was waiting there.
